Will It Ever Be Cool To Like Fleetwood Mac?

by David Hayter
Guitar Planet Magazine

Fleetwood Mac are back and bigger than ever but is it finally time guitar fans dropped their pretentions and embraced one of the greatest “uncool” acts of the 1970s?

Good read! Check it out at: Guitar Planet Magazine

Just looking at this headline makes me cringe. Those who worry that their musical tastes be perceived by others as "cool" are not serious music fans but pathetic individuals whose "tastes" are dictated by marketing and advertising. Says a lot about our culture and country that middle-aged people worry whether they're "cool" or not, as if all of life is Junior HIgh School with all of the peer pressure that implies. Ugh.

I don't care what other people consider "cool", Fleetwood Mac rock's. In my opinion they never done a bad song.

Guitar Planet isn't exactly what I would call a tastemaker.
When Pitchfork.com gave Rumours a 10 out of 10 a few weeks ago, I decided that FM has earned coolness status for another generation.

There seemed to be some cool factor in the early days before Rumours, and then again around 87~ (Tango/BTM) or so. I think The Dance was pretty well received by the cool kids as well. After that it went downhill and what they're doing right now can never be seen as cool no matter what the output. Say You Will ruined any cool they had amassed once and for all. They're in a state of decay I'd say, and touring with no real reason or product to back up makes them look like washed-up money hounds. Definitely not cool. At all.

^^^ What on earth are you doing on this blog? If anything they are HARDLY uncool these days! My God, Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks is everywhere on pop culture! Anyone you talk to also loves them from young teenagers to grandmas! I think you are speaking of your own opinion. If you don't like them anymore you don't have to listen or support them. Nuff said.

BTW, I don't know where they got 'uncool' status. Apparently from what I recall, having a #1 album in the 70's.... they must've not been that uncool. lol. Everyone was listening to them.

Poster #1 said it all for me. Ditto, and thank you!

I don't see this tour or past recent tours as having no real reason.
This is what musicians do. Nobody in the band needs any more $, and they could all just do what Christine McVie did, but I think they actually love playing. Bob Dylan continues to tour year after year and nobody calls him a washed up money hound.
Personally, I'm not that interested in seeing FM live anymore, because I know exactly what the show will be like with few surprises.
I don't need to hear Dreams, Go Your Own Way, Rhiannon, or Don't Stop anymore. I'm more interested in the non-hits and new material. And I'm also not a big fan of big venues with bad sound systems/acoustics. But artists/musicians need to do what they love, so I say - Go for it, Fleetwood Mac.
I'm shocked that this tour has sold out -- maybe everyone feels like it will be the last legit tour.

Don't worry, I won't be at any FM shows. I've heard GYOW and Dreams 4 million times too many by now, and they have enough of my money already. Oh, and please don't be so hasty to dish out labels of who is and who isn't a fan. You don't have to have a glowing opinion that's all sweetness to be a fan. I'm a fan, but I won't take part in what FM is doing these days. When they have something to offer that I think is worth it, I'll pay out. Until then I'll hang on to my coppers. And for the record, I really don't care if they're considered cool or not - I don't think they are - but that won't stop me from enjoying the music of their's that I like.

Oh dear, I've upset you. I should leave and never come with my nasty troll opinions that don't line up to yours.

I'm here because I was reading the article and added a comment. Why else? But one little word and I'm out of the club? I guess that's what I get for speaking my OWN opinion. Who else's opinion would I be speaking from? My pet Chinchilla's?

I'll stop listening and stop supporting when I please, thanks, so until then... "Nuff said"

This Is A Very Valid Question To Ask said...

I don't see at all why this is an invalid question and I think it is something that is perfect for this blog to include. Being a fan of someone or a band means taking the negative with the positive in all respects. You can't just pick and choose what you want and ignore the rest. This question might not make everyone here happy, but it IS a question that has merit.

You younguns who count yourselves amongst the FM/SN fanbase now don't understand that it's been uncool to admit to being a FM/SN fan for a very long time. When I was a teenager (I'm 40) I remember the kids I went to school with laughing at me and making fun of the fact that I was a Stevie Nicks fan and actually had the guts to admit it publicly.

Just because I thought Stevie and the band made awesome music when I was a teenager didn't change the fact that it's never really been cool to like them. Despite the fact Stevie has been looked at as a joke for a long time by a lot of people didn't deter me from being a big fan of hers. I stopped admitting it to anyone who didn't share the same thoughts about Stevie and her music as I did, but I didn't stop being a fan.

I'm poster #1 and I really appreciate what poster #7 said. Perhaps we should meet for a drink. You sound gorgeous.

Fleetwood Mac is cooler than ever. I thought "Say You Will" was VERY cool. The songs are much more Southern California than we were used to, but so what? We got "Illume" and "Goodbye Baby" out of it. Stevie sounded GREAT on "Say You Will" - MUCH better than on TISL. Stevie will always be cool. 100 years from people will still be studying her stage presence.

Thank you poster #12, that's sweet. You sound pretty gorgeous yourself. *wink wink* And the drinks are on me!

To Poster #5:

"to the last post.then don't go to the shows y r u even on this site. u ain't no big fan u just want to be negitive. it funny the tour is just about sold out already. "

y r u on this site? u don't lyke what it considers a relevant news storee and u want 2 hear nothing but good stuff about FM. sorry 2 tell u, it ain't all good all the time. FM ain't purfect and every now n then a storee lyke this will come along. if that makes u mad, soree. sucks 2 b u!

Whew! That reply took 100 points off my IQ. Glad I've got plenty to spare. ;-)

Seriously, though, why should we as fans get angry when something is said that we don't agree with? This article had every right to ask if it would ever be cool to like FM. Every right. Someone somewhere else on the Internet said something that I completely agree with at a time like this. When someone says something negative about something I like, it doesn't make me angry. It makes me look deeper at whatever it is being talked about. Makes me wonder if perhaps I missed something he or she didn't. As fans of FM/SN, do we often have devotion that makes us blind to what others see? Sure, we do. We've all done it.

It's not right, though, to say someone isn't a fan just because they might think negatively at some point about the band. That kind of thinking is exactly the same line of thought that FM themselves threw out at us in 2003 with that stupid fan club. Only the "real fans" (their words, not mine) were the ones who forked out the money to join the fan club that took advantage of so many "real fans" that the band loved so much.

And on a side comment, to poster #9, I like what you said. And that you have a pet Chinchilla is just a plus. Perhaps we should meet for a drink. My treat. You sound gorgeous. ;-)

Why do people feel compelled to argue or instantly post their thoughts/ideas without thinking? This world is ridiculously filled with idiots who want to argue about music! Music is to be enjoyed! If you do not like someone/something, shut up, bite your tongue, and move on! Can't we all just get along??? People are sadly rude and this is why our world is in the shape it is in. Slow down, breathe, and compliment instead of complaining! Have a beautiful day!

people write stupid articles to sell magazines.

ENOUGH SAID!

Anonymous said...

Looks like this site is filtering comments, too now?

It's OK for the poster above to call everyone "idiots" and to "shut up", but any reply/counter argument is censored?

About as much as I'd expect really.

Well #18, your comment was approved, so see? No reason to feel offended. But I like the comment that triggered your response: "Slow down, breathe, and compliment instead of complaining! Have a beautiful day!"

Anonymous said...

^^
Get with the program, huh? That's obviously not the comment I was talking about.

"So see?"

I'd hardly be complaining my comment wasn't published if it had actually, you know, been published.

There were other comments before that in reply to "shut up" and being labeled "idiots" that were oddly but not surprisingly left unpublished.

This blog is just taking the same typical stand on the truth and balanced discussion that the FM/SN fan community has been peddling for at least a decade: Your opinion is only worth hearing if it's approved by the rest of us.

Nickslive said...

You guys... It's not that fun moderating comments. It's such a waste of time. I enjoy reading others opinions on what's been posted and I welcome them all, I really do, good or bad. Not everyone is going to feel the same and I find it interesting what the fan base responds too. Where it turns sour is when the conversation is directed AWAY from what's been posted and turns into people attacking others for having a certain opinion. From there it becomes a back and forth ad nauseam situation. Not fun! So all I ask is for you to be tactful in how you respond to others.. Or simple say I don't agree and state your own opinion why.. Nobody's right and nobody's wrong. Make sense?

Thanks

Anonymous said...

Makes perfect sense, but when you approve comments that have people being called "idiots" and told to "shut up" and then don't approve those that want to reply back to these people, that definitely doesn't make sense. It makes it appear that you agree with these types of posters, with what they're saying, as well as the "don't speak negatively of Stevie...EVER" mentality that's actually getting quite out of hand.

I'm a fan but I'm not going to sit back and be stifled because some other fans think it's against the Stevie code of conduct to voice true and honest thoughts and opinions - even if they're harsh and unpopular.

Nickslive said...

Yes, I agree.. It does look like that, but it wasn't my intention and I apologize for that. There were quite a few comments that didn't make it simply because it would have turned into a sh*t storm, so deleted them on mass. If you prefer I can delete that comment as well?

Anonymous said...

Thank you, but no need to delete anything. It's fine.
