Lindsey Buckingham hints Fleetwood Mac album will be studio swan song

Lindsey Buckingham hinted that Fleetwood Mac's next album might be the band's studio swan song. During a chat with PBS' Tavis Smiley, Buckingham spoke about the new material he's been cooking up with returning keyboardist Christine McVie, revealing, "Before we started rehearsing the show with Christine, she came over and said, ‘Lindsey, I’ve got some rough ideas for new songs. She gave me a bunch of stuff to take home after we saw her in England when we played there. And I worked on it at home, took lots of liberties, came back. She loved it. We went in the studio for two months and came up with probably the best group of songs that were co-written that we’ve done in years. So we are going to continue working on a new album and (my) solo stuff will probably take a back seat for another year or so.”

He went on to say the still unfinished album "would be a beautiful way to kind of wrap up this last act."

Although Lindsey Buckingham is marking his 40th anniversary of joining Fleetwood Mac, at 65, he still feels like he's at the top of his game: “A lot of the idea of (laughs) being in a rock n’ roll band and getting to be one of, sort of the people who’s been around for a while, y’know, you can manage that equation any number of ways. Y’know, it’s hard for me to sort of. . . I feel the same physically as I did 25 years ago. I think I’m mentally, somewhat in arrested (laughs) development - y’know, in a good way, I hope!”

Side Notes:

MORE ON "ONE MAN SHOW"
Out now is Lindsey Buckingham's first ever solo live album -- Lindsey Buckingham: One Man Show. The set was recorded on September 1st, 2012 in Des Moines, Iowa at Hoyt Sherman Place, and chronicled the set Buckingham has playing on his last solo tour.

The album features Buckingham tapping into his solo work with tracks like "Go Insane" and "Trouble," Fleetwood Mac with "I'm So Afraid," and "Go Your Own Way" -- and even a rare dip into the Buckingham Nicks catalogue with "Stephanie."

The tracklisting for Lindsey Buckingham: One Man Show is: "Cast Away Dreams," "Bleed To Love Her," "Not Too Late," "Stephanie," "Come," "Shut Us Down," "Go Insane," "Never Going Back Again," "Big Love," "I'm So Afraid," "Go Your Own Way," "Trouble," and "Seeds We Sow."

Still no mention of Stevie's participation in the new album. Perhaps since she said her involvement with Fleetwood Mac only goes through the end of 2015, they will finish the European tour, she will record her songs for the album in the fall and they will then tour Australia in late fall/early winter, since that is their summer. Then Lindsey could finish the album and they would put it out without a tour. Stevie could then go on with her own stuff and maybe if the album is a hit they will decide to tour again later.

Hmmm... Here's my concern about the Mac not touring the new album: the Mac (or at least Mick) learnt that FM album sales seem to fall flat as soon as touring ends (Rumours notwithstanding, of course). Mick made a note of it in his first autobio: "Mirage" slipped off the charts pretty much as soon as its short tour was complete. I'll buy my copy/copies just the same (I even bought the "Extended Play" EP, which was subtly promoted by today's standards, IIRC). Just saying: if the band doesn't want to tour the new album right when it comes out, I'd say it's highly likely they won't tour it at all.

Well I have to say I don't know how they do it!!!! They seem to be constantly on tour and whilst the fans are understandably ecstatic, the band must be exhausted! I've got tickets to see them at the o2 in London next June and I hope they are still on their feet by then! In fairness, I think Stevie and Lindsey deserve time after this tour to work on their own stuff and all the band should have a good rest; heaven knows they will have earned it. It's lovely to have Chris back and great to see John on stage, hopefully fully recovered now from his illness. The reviews have been great so here's wishing them all a wonderful 2015, both professionally and personally.

Just hope the tickets are under what they are now. Jeez I spent 10 years worth of ticket money just in one year. Can't keep that up no matter how much I love the Mac and after reading Storms I'm surprised Stevie even put herself back in the mix. I do hope it is a healthier environment now like Mick had mention and not just talk.

Lindsay's playing is untouchable but his solo compositions and those donated to the Mac have been horrendous without Christine. No good material since Tango.

Can't wait for the new album..FM is better than ever! Lindsey is one of the greatest guitarists of all Time..Lindsey/Stevie/ Christine beautiful singer-songwriters..This is great music from very talented artists.. Throw out the book storms ...she leaves out the most important part of their relationship.. HE moved her out of the Bel Air house they shared for excessive drug use..just a way to make a dime..don't spend it..

I'm sure Stevie will contribute. If most of Christine's and Lindsey's songs are almost finished, then all they need are Stevie's vocals and final mixing. They could record Stevie's songs within a couple of months, and I am certain after SYW Stevie will insist her songs are co-produced with someone she's comfortable with. The band could then finish out their tour in Australia. The album won't be released right away, remember Stevie said Reprise told her if she wanted 24KG released in 2015 she had to hand it in by June. So if the new Mac record is finished in the fall of 2015 it won't be released until spring or early summer 2016. That gives Stevie plenty of time to do her 24KG tour she wants to do. And I'm sure the band will tour to support the new album - touring is how bands like Mac make their money. They don't make their money from albums anymore.
