Weekend Earworm: @StevieNicks Reveals Catchy "Mabel Normand" Clip!

Here's another lyric to have stuck in your head!...Stevie sounds pretty amazing on this and from the dark undertones of the music, this sounds like it'll be winner!

"but her heart was quietly crying
I guess she even felt quilty, about even dying
Sad Mabel Normand"

More clips from "24 Karat Gold - Songs From The Vault" can be heard here.

Pre-Order Stevie Nicks "24 Karat Gold - Songs From The Vault". In stores October 7th.

  1. This song sounds 100% better than "the Dealer". I'm not saying it's a better song, it just doesn't sound like mud. Stevie's voice is crisp and it's stand out. No matter how I adjust the EQ on "the Dealer" it sounds like blown speakers. NOW I'm excited!!!

  2. I like this song so much better than The Dealer. Makes me hope there are other great tracks on the CD. I have an old demo of Watch Chain and have always loved it, was hoping she would record it for the new Fleetwood Mac CD, but am glad to know it will be on this solo one. Am still very curious as to what she will contribute to the new Mac music.

  3. Wow, definately the big surprise here.... I always wondered how the -let's say rough- demo would turn out... This is the Stevie I love so much...simoly adoreable

  4. "I guess she even felt guilty/About EVEN dying" - hmpf. What in the world is that supposed to mean?

    1. The song is about Mabel Norm and, the silent screen star.

If you take the time to read about her, you will understand the lyrics better.

So...bah humbug! You know what that means, right?

  5. From "The Dealer" to the snippets of "I Don't Care" and now "Mabel Normand..."

This makes me so excited because it makes me realize 24KG is going to just as musically diverse as IYD.

  6. Uh, I read a biography of Mabel Normand in the mid-90's when a company I worked for had her life story in development for Liza Minnelli, who wanted to produce and star in it. I know who Mabel Normand is. I live a few miles from the studio Mabel M. worked for (Mack Sennett Studios). I was just pointing up Stevie's bad, nonsensical grammar, which can drive Lindsey (and me) crazy. After all this time she couldn't have cleaned up with awful couplet? It's not Shakespeare.

  7. As a lyricist does it really matter if her grammar is "nonsensical?" Stevie herself has said numerous times she prefers to write in more of a Bob Dylan-esque style where she shifts her tenses and writes in an unconventional manner. Her lyrical style is as unique as her voice, that's part of her charm, in my opinion. I would also point out this isn't prose. Stevie majored in speech communication in college and planned on becoming an English teacher. To me this says Stevie's songwriting style is intentional. Would it work for other artists? No, I don't think it would but it works for her. The phrasing is likely what felt the most natural to sing when she imagined what type of music would go with the lyrics.

  8. The above comment is right - it's perfect the way Stevie wrote it and she knew and she always does know what she is doing. All intentional and all Stevie. It really is part of her charm.

  9. I feel like from the small 16 seconds we were allowed to hear ... this song should be a single. In fact, I think if there's only one music video being produced for this album (and it sounds like there was only one being produced but let's HOPE for a couple) I would prefer a music video for "Mabel Normand" over "The Dealer," just because I think a song like "Mabel Normand" would allow Stevie and her creative crew to deliver a really strong music video.

    1. Well, you might get your wish! The old theater with the red seats where Stevie shot her video seems to fit the imagery associated with a silent movie star. I could be completely wrong of course, but I always had the feeling The Dealer was more of a sneak peek than an official single...

  10. This song is GREAT!!!!! LOVE IT!
I tried taking one of the "even"s out, and it doesn't work as well. Probably why they're both in there ;)

  11. Btw, I never could figure out how to sing "when the rain WASHes" the way Lindsey wanted it. I agree with Stevie, I like "wa-SHES" much better....

  12. Yes, as a lyricist IT DOES MATTER.

    ReplyDelete
  13. @ Comment # 10 - You need to explain yourself .. WHY does it matter? You can't just say it matters w/o offering a logical explanation.

You say as a lyricist it does matter ... okay, why? Point out and reference for us the grammatical rules that state a lyricist must write it particular formats.

  15. I am surprised by all these comments about Stevie's style of writing lyrics. This is her poetry and she has always had a unique was of phrasing things. That's one of the things most of her fans love: the way she lays a lyric across a melody. "You know I'd rather be alone than be without you" from Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You makes no literal sense, but we all know the message Stevie was getting across, many of her lyrics are like that and it's what makes her the great poet she is.

  16. The debate exists because Haters are gonna hate...and there a lot of so-called Stevie-fans who are haters.

  17. For some reason my comments haven't been approved lately. I hope I don't come across as offensive. But I absolutely love this song clip!!!! Sounds like it might end up getting played 5,000 times and my favorite ;)

  18. Also, I'd like to add if approved, that poet e.e. cummings didn't adhere to the proper grammar and punctuation crowd either. In fact, he built his career on busting up the rules! Sometimes, his poems painted a pretty picture on the page! It's called "being an artist" :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh, please - this isn't ee cummings we're talking about. The phrasing in this song is clunky and inelegant and the take on MN simplistic to the point of being trite. As a songwriter, when Stevie hits it, she hits it big. But when she misses...boy does she miss....

    1. Unbelievable! Your initial complaint was clunky phrasing. Now you've added "trite take on Mabel Normand". Is this John from Hollywood? If so, you didn't like Stevie's vocal on The Dealer, the way it was recorded, or Stewart's production.

For those of you keeping score, there's not much left to dislike about Stevie except maybe her nail polish, but I'm sure that's all wrong too....

  20. its the same hater who does not approve the songs from the vault but he or she claims to be a big stevie fan but hates everything she does lately!

  21. Who cares? It's a good song. If you don't like it - don't listen to it. Don't subject us to your whinging.

  22. These types of people aren't logical enough to "turn the channel" when there is something on TV they don't like to see. They feel it is their duty to make sure everyone else doesn't see it either.

Same idea here - it's not enough for them to just not listen and leave it at that - they shove their dislike and hate down everyone's throats.

I suppose it is the only way they get attention and love that is missing from their lives.

I fully agree - don't like? Don't listen, and, don't impose your will on the rest of us - we don't care you don't like...LET ME REPEAT: WE DON'T CARE YOU DON'T LIKE.

The rest of us want to create our own experience with the new music, and decide for ourselves which songs make it onto our car mix CD and which one's we prefer to leave off.

You'll be happy with your mix CD, and we all will be happy with ours...and what could be better than driving down the highway with our favorite Stevie songs blasting out of the speakers?

  23. Want to talk clunky songwriting -- I just listened to about 20 seconds of Taylor Swifts new song and came RUNNING back to my Stevie Nicks fan page.

  24. Sounds great. Love the sound of all of these new songs. The band sounds great - wedged somewhere between Tusk and Bella Donna.
(I think the new version of The Dealer is way better than the demo).

  25. I just want to comment to Jay: I think I remember an interview with Stevie where she said it was Don Henley who argued with her about the phrasing of "washes." Just for whatever that's worth. Did anyone else remember that? But that's interesting though if Lindsey said that too. I didn't know that.
    Thanks.
