  1. Oh well. There goes any chance for 24K Gold to gain any traction. Of all of the songs she could have chosen to perform, she chose the one song on the album that tests the upper and lower limits of her vocal range; when she's not wobbling at the bottom end, she's screaming out the high notes. And scarily enough, what we got on the album is probably the best vocal take (or composite of vocal takes) in a controlled, ideal studio setting, yet the results are still pretty bad by Stevie standards. Given Stevie's shaky track record regarding televised live performances (of songs that are arguably much easier to sing), I am expecting this to be bad. Really, really bad. I wish she would have Dave give the Roots the arrangements to "The Dealer" or "Watch Chain," which would translate much better on television. It's not too late, Stevie!

  2. Maybe we could reserve judgement until she actually performs! I'm sure she will be great.

  3. I'm thrilled she is singing this. Best track on the album.

  4. When people talk of Stevie's promotional appearances for IYD it's automatically assumed that the appearances helped sales. Not necessarily. Her performances of SECRET LOVE - a mediocre song - were shrill and harsh, as poster #1 honestly shared about other live performances. When I looked at YouTube reviews SECRET LOVE on THE VOICE they were very negative. I hope she chooses something flattering but in all likelihood she'll sing LANDSLIDE again....

  5. Lady??!! 24 K Gold or The dealer would be better for a TV show, as I'm sure she won't try Mabel Normand, the best track on the CD

  6. Get a grip people! It doesn't matter what she sings as far as helping sales of the album are concerned. I think Lady is a great choice and I also love Stevie's vocals on it. To the poster at the top, you're no fan and really should stop talking out of your ass! Why do you even follow Stevie at this point?

  7. The album made its debut on Billboard's Top 200 albums chart at #7 and dropped to #30 in its second week.

It doesn't matter which song she selects to sing - none will result in the album gaining traction.

"Lady" is the official single and since it requires only a piano, of course that's the logical choice since she has no solo band currently.

How 'bout everyone just watch the performance and enjoy it for face value - or not. I, for one, am happy she's going to be on a show and performing.

  8. Wake up, it's 2014. None of these songs will ever get airplay. And nobody will buy her album based on a performance on The Tonight Show. They have a musical guest every single night -- no one EVER gets a sales boost. It's just how the world works now.

We're lucky we're getting any performance at all. There's no way she could rehearse like she'd want to with a full band for any of the songs like Starshine.

And to the first anonymous poster, you're an idiot. Why should how she sounds on an album reflect how she sounds now? She's in the middle of a Fleetwood Mac tour - she'll probably sound great.

  9. Absolutely - Lady is a great choice and a great song. There are others too but I'm sure she feels like this is one of the stronger songs on the album. And Robert above is so right - Stevie will not get on the radio with anything at this point. It's all about the new artists, (if you can call them that) who will be gone in a year or two. Stevie has been surviving for years - terrible the radio stations have turned their backs. So enjoy Stevie's choice. It will be great.

  10. its the same idiot that thought the cd would not be any good either!!

  11. To poster #1, you are not a fan! If you don't like her current vocals, than go spin "Rumours" and shut up! Stop trying to decide what Stevie Nicks should or shouldn't do, based on your opinions. Most of her performances on tv for "IYD" were done when she was ill with an upper respitory system. That's why she missed the Today show and two big personal promos in NYC for the launch week of, "IYD." Her vocals on "Lady" are fabulous. I think that is a good choice for the Fallon show. intimate, and just Stevie and a piano. Stevie wouldn't sing it if she didn't think she could pull it off. And like Robert said, no song on the show will give it a huge sales boost. People, this album wasn't crafted for the sake of sales. It's a love letter to the fans. It's Stevie's art. And not aiming for a hit resulted in one of her best collection of songs. in ages . It's so rock and roll!! This will continue to sell slowly long after it leaves the charts. True fans will discover it, The 32,000 it sold to the first week were us online die-hards! Pretty awesome, it reached that many with just the internet to promote it.

  12. Robert above is so right. Radio stations have written off anything new from Stevie which is tragic. We can debate all day which song is best on the new album but also agree there are some great songs. Radio stations are just interested in new artists which will all be gone in a year or two. They win grammy's, get all the airplay, and then disappear. I will watch the show and enjoy Lady very much. I think it's special to Stevie so let's all enjoy it. I actually love it.

  13. How did this discussion turn into a screed about radio airplay? Stay on topic, people! The point here is that a bad live vocal performance on broadcast television is likely to extinguish potential sales rather than entice people into wanting to hear more. Stevie is not doing this appearance just for sh**s and giggles; she is intending to PROMOTE the new album, so it is especially puzzling why she would choose to perform a song that she can barely sing in the studio. "Lady" is, by far, the worst vocal/song on 24KG, which is otherwise a stellar collection featuring some of her best vocals ever. This is not an album full of maudlin, sentimental piano ballads, which makes "Lady" an especially puzzling choice as the "big single"/video from the album. Where is Tom when some "hard advice" needs to be dished?

  14. I agree with what people are saying. Although, radio hasn't just written off Stevie. They ignore new music by all older artists.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It's very ironic that it's the old supergroups that are the ones that draw in 20K+ crowds in stadiums while the crap on radio might fill a fair ground or 6,000 seat inner city venue. These acts are not recording for sales but to stimulate interest in paying $400.00+ a seat somewhere and they are indeed selling these places out.

  16. Actually there are radio stations that do play Stevie's newer music - they're either not corporate stations (such as the Jack FM stations), or they're Adult Contemporary and/or Adult Alternative radio stations (which reach about 1/4 of the listeners), or they're online radio stations.. These are the stations that play newer songs by older artists. The Hot 100 or Top 40 stations, which most people listen to, are not going to play her new singles so essentially Robert and John are very correct.

It happens to older artists all the time. New music has come out in the past year or two not only for Stevie, but Heart, Blondie, Cher, Madonna, and Bruce Springsteen to name a few. Madonna is a prime example ... There are so many kids today who have no clue who Madonna is, why she's important to the history of pop music, and how many trails she blazed. That's evident because her last record, 2012's 'MDNA,' barely received any radio play on Top 40 or Hot 100. Blondie's new album is incredible but outside of a few adult alternative stations you're only going to hear it on the Internet or if you go buy it.

John also makes a good point ... Just like IYD and previous records, 24KG will continue to sell slowly long after it falls off the charts. As for the choice of "Lady..." it's a beautiful, tender ballad that Stevie can perform with probably very little rehearsal. She doesn't need a band to rehearse with, it's something she could easily rehearse in her dressing room every night before Fleetwood Mac if she wanted. I can't wait to see this performance, she's going to knock it out of the park!!!

  17. "The point here is that a bad live vocal performance on broadcast television is likely to extinguish potential sales rather than entice people into wanting to hear more."

WRONG. Good performance or not, people don't buy songs or albums unless they feature into their favorite TV shows. And would you shut up about her vocal on the album? That has nothing to do with what she'll sound like live! Talk about getting off topic!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Why does any opinion that isn't fawning over everything Stevie does automatically end up with a "you're not a real fan response" on here? Stop it! Everyone can have their say! We're all "fans" but maybe in different ways. Here's THIS fan's opinion.

-24KG is just as much about sales as any record. If it wasn't, it would have been given to you free. This "love letter" idea is ludicrous. There are a thousands of bands out there that offer up music to their fans totally free everyday. That's TRULY for the fans. How much music has Stevie offered up without coin in return?

-Lady is a pretty divisive recording and has no hook or obvious musicality that would make it an ideal choice for public performance - which is about promo. I like the song itself but the 24KG version sounds quite strained. It's no surprise people are wondering about the choice. It may not be a bad performance but it's not the type of track many of us would think the best option given the poor sales of the record and the limited range of Stevie's voice right now. And that's fine! But to suggest that those sales don't matter is just a bit silly. It was only a few years ago Stevie was giving interviews stating that she wasn't interested in recording because her hard-core fans would just buy the album and put it on the web for downloading and sales wouldn't make it worth bothering. So sales are VERY important to her even now.

-Finally, Stevie does seem to be making choices that are a bit odd these days when it comes to promo and single releases. Secret Love, For What It's Worth, Cheaper Than Free, Lady, The Dealer.... All aiming for the Adult Contemporary crowd. This is Stevie Nicks, not the Golden Anniversary Best Of.... There were some great rock songs on IYD, and 24K has some gems as well. But the safe and tame route is leaving them very much hidden.

  19. I guess I agree to disagree then because I just don't hear what you seem to hear! Great for me, bad for you. I love The Dealer and For What It's Worth. You do just seem to wanna rip on Stevie though!

  20. @anonymous, that is YOUR opinion of "Lady," not everybody elses opinion. The majority loves the song and her vocals on it, both fans and critics. And, once again, you seem to not be getting that a 66 year old artist is NOT going to have a major hit single to promote an album. A single performance on Fallon won't make a difference, either, even if she just sang "Mary had a little lamb." Nor was this album designed for big sales. Your elevator obviously doesn't go all the way to the top floor.

  21. I'd rather not get involved in the current debate, nor do I wish to choose "sides." My first reaction upon reading the "Lady" news was surprise. Not because it was the "wrong" choice, but because it's vocally demanding. If Stevie is in the right frame of mind, she'll be able to pull it off. I actually respect her courage for choosing the most "stripped" song on the new CD.

Regarding live TV appearances and album sales... A great performance (which is to some degree subjective) can indeed help to get the word out that a performer has new music. Barbra Streisand just celebrated her 10th #1 album last month making her the only artist ever (solo or band) to have a number #1 album in 6 consecutive decades (1964-2014). Not only did she debut at #1 she stayed on the top 5 for 4 weeks and last week was still at #7. Up until Taylor Swift's release this week, Barbra had the biggest selling debut album this year by a female artist.

Coincidentally, Streisand appeared live on Jimmy Fallon and they performed a medley of songs from her new CD, Partners. Not only did it highlight her vocal ability, but it showcased her humorous side (which has been virtually absent for decades as far as performing is involved). The Tonight show posted the video of Jimmy and Barbra singing the next day and it had over 3 million views by the end of the week. I have no doubt that performance helped boost sales. It also marked the first late night show appearance Streisand has made in 50 years (the last was with Johnny Carson in the early 1960s).

Stevie has been in major media markets for the last 10-15 years. She's happy to do every interview she's offered with major outlets. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but some like Streisand is VERY strategic with her appearances and it seems to have really payed off for her throughout her career. Ever appearance is an even (so to speak). Stevie is becoming like a good friend we see on a regular basis, which is kind of surprising considering how few TV interviews she's did from 1975-1996.

Streisand's voice at 72 is not what it was even 10 years ago, but she still has the ability to impress with her instrument. Given the right material, I think Stevie will be able to do the same, just in a very different way.

  22. FYI: Kathie Lee & Hoda just said at the end of their hour of the Today Show on Friday October 31st, Halloween, that Stevie Nicks was going to be a guest on their show next week.

  23. Sorry about all the people bashing here. I understand what you are trying to say and see that you are a huge fan to have even bothered posting an opinion.

  24. I suggest she perform 24K Gold, she will get great expo and the name of the album will stick in peoples mind, that song is contagious..

  25. It's a great song and she'll do great.
And who cares about sales and charts?
These guys are way beyond that now. Look at today's music charts - it's mostly crap and very little true "artists".

KCRW in Santa Monica, one of the biggest and most respected non commercial progressive music stations in the country has been playing her new album -- especially Mabel Normand.

  26. Yeah. I guess I'm just fucking tone deaf. I think Lady is one if the best vocal efforts on the CD along with 24k Gold, Belle Fleur, Starshine, Watch Devil & several others. I don't get what people hate about her vocals on Lady. I think her solo video of it is also one of her all time best attempts at making a video. Simple & Classic. Even my all time favorite demo of Blue Water that I was so sure would be ruined she managed to make a great alternate take. Give this living and thriving legend a break folks. No one else even 20 years younger than her is thriving this well. Stevie Nicks is amazing. So is Chris @ 71. We should all be looking in the mirror.
