John McVie and Mick Fleetwood Featured on NEW ZZ Top Tribute

October 11th is the official release date of ZZ Top A Tribute From Friends. This eleven track compilation draws together newly-recorded versions of ZZ Top classics, interpreted by a range of artists. The album leads off with “Sharp Dressed Man,” which is credited to The M.O.B., a group that features Mick Fleetwood, Steven Tyler, Jonny Lang and John McVie.

Upon learning of the album, Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard, responded via statement: “When we were told there was going to be a ZZ Top tribute album a while ago and logically asked, ‘Who are we paying tribute to?’ Then we found out that a bunch of great artists were paying tribute to us and we were in disbelief. For the past 40 or so years, all we’ve done is get out there and crank it and try to have a good time while doing so. To a great extent, we’ve succeeded since we’re still having a good time so that would be reward enough for ‘the same three guys playing the same three chords.’ Now comes A Tribute From Friends and we’re so delighted that our music resonates with these great musicians whom we so admire.”

Fleetwood admits he was thrilled to be asked to be a part of the tribute: "We’re delighted to honour ZZ Top this way. Their legacy, like that of the original Fleetwood Mac, is steeped in the blues we all love so much. I know that Steven and Jonny feel as strongly about their legacy as John and I do."

Mick and John's inclusion on this album was initially reported back in January, 2011 HERE.

The album is available for pre-order on Amazon

MICK & JOHN ALONG WITH STEVEN TYLER AT TOMMY LEE'S STUDIO

Recording a previously reported about track for a ZZ Top Tribute CD.  No information on what track they recorded or what city this is...presumably LA.  But it took place over the last couple of days.

Pictured: Jonny Lang, Tommy Lee, Steven Tyler, Mick Fleetwood & John McVie.
More photos here at Tommylee.com

In one of the photos on the site, it almost looks as if Brett Tuggle is sitting in on key boards.  Check out the photo, the one with John McVie's back to the camera.

MICK FLEETWOOD JOINS JOHN MAYALL AT MAUI GIG

First John Mcvie appeared with John Mayall in Honolulu on November18th - Now it's Micks turn. Mick sat in with John's band at the MACC (Maui Arts & Cultural Center) in Kahului, HI last night (Nov. 20th).  No other details available.

"John Mayall last played on Maui at the close of 2009, jamming with the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band at a Mala Wailea New Year's celebration. If the legendary drummer is home, he will likely play a bit at the MACC on November 20th.

"Hopefully Mick will show up because he did last time," says Mayall. Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie told Mayall he will join the Honolulu show. "That will be nice to see him," he adds.

Mick and his band will play a couple of holiday concerts including Dec. 30 at the Maui Theatre in Lahaina. And we can look forward to a new club, Fleetwoods, opening in Lahaina."

JOHN MCVIE MAKES APPEARANCE WITH JOHN MAYALL - HONOLULU NOV 18TH

A nearly full house turned out for a concert by Shemekia Copeland and John Mayall Thursday night at Pipeline Cafe in Honolulu, for a lively revival show that paid appropriate homage to the blues masters who created American roots music and rock and roll.

If all that wasn’t enough: Oldsters who remembered the first wave of British blues were treated to a special treat when John McVie of Fleetwood Mac, who played bass with Mayall way back when as part of the Bluesbreakers and now spends a good bit of his time in Maui, stepped up on stage for a couple of songs with the band. McVie was extremely gracious, taking time after his appearance to speak with everyone who wanted a word.

WOLFGANGS VAULT.... VINTAGE FLEETWOOD MAC PHOTOS 75, 77 & 79

A really amazing collection of photos at Wolfgangs Vault in the photo section.  If you've never been to the site, it's a must!   Loads of really vintage photos (which are a little pricey) and live shows to stream from the concert vault - or buy (at a reasonable cost).  And not of only Fleetwood Mac, but pretty much every band to come along since the 60's & 70's. Just a great site all around. You'll learn a lot and hear alot!

I noticed they've added more photos to the site since the last time I visited, which was sometime ago... Fleetwood Mac in New Haven, CT - 1975 & 1979 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum and Hartford, CT at the Civic Center - 1977.  Here are just a sample... There's more at the site.

Photographer, Joe Sia, captured moments by focusing on the faces of the performers, the crowd, and by giving the background, whether simple or wild, the importance it deserved in defining the artist and event.

MICK FLEETWOOD BLUES BAND TOUR POSTER PHOTO SHOOT

A couple of interesting shots of Mick Fleetwood, Rick Vito and John McVie.

According to this blogger and profession photographer Tony Novak-Clifford "chase the light" these are shots for the tour poster for The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band.

In the notes on the site, it indicates John McVie is in the band and Lenny Castellanos subs for John on bass for some dates. I didn't realize that John was initially in the band!?  I know Lenny Castellanos has been the only visible bass player thus far in the group.

These photos are from April, 2008 and were taken by tour manager William Pie in Hawaii.

JOHN MCVIE.... PLEASE MEET JOHN MCVIE

Shared name ticket to Fleetwood Mac concert
BY JUDITH LAVOIE, TIMES COLONIST

Victoria real estate agent John McVie knows exactly what's in a name.

Five free tickets to the sold-out Fleetwood Mac concert at GM Place in Vancouver Friday, backstage passes for the entire family, $700 raised for charity from auctioning signed Fleetwood Mac CDs and a series of phone calls and e-mails from the famous John McVie -- the bassist with Fleetwood Mac.

The Victoria McVie was still over the moon yesterday after meeting the musician.

"He's a really nice guy -- genuine and real," said McVie, who is considering wearing his Fleetwood Mac T-shirt to work next week.

The connection started about eight years ago when McVie wanted the JohnMcVie.com web address for marketing, but found it had been reserved by the musician.

Since it was not being used, McVie fired off an e-mail asking if he could have it, without any expectation of receiving a reply.

About three weeks later, he answered the phone with his name, as usual, only to hear someone with a British accent saying, "I am not used to someone using my name."

"I said I am John McVie and he said, 'I am John McVie.' Then we chatted for about 15 minutes and compared notes on where our grandparents had come from," said McVie, who settled for the web address JohnMcVie.ca, but wangled the signed CDs for a charity auction he was doing.

Strangely, the two men had something else in common -- both were tax inspectors when they were younger.

The Victoria McVie asked for the musician's forgiveness for the many times he had impersonated him.

"And he said, 'Milk it for all it's worth,'" McVie said.

Over the years, there were intermittent exchanges and a commitment to meet if Fleetwood Mac was in the area.

The opportunity came with the band's North American tour and, true to his word, Fleetwood Mac McVie came through with the tickets.

"Afterwards, we had a good chat and he had his picture taken with all of us," McVie said. "It was a lot of fun."

Nicks / McVie in Austin, TX

Still amazing to see pics of the band that I've never seen before. These are apparently from the mid seventies - likely 1977 - in Austin, TX. and the photographer was Steve Lawson. (click to enlarge)
