REVIEW: Fleetwood Mac Returns with Renewed Energy

Fleetwood Mac returns with renewed energy
EnergySolutions Arena,
Salt Lake City - June 3

Deseret News

Fleetwood Mac returned to the EnergySolutions Arena Wednesday night for their "Unleashed" tour. The band has no new album to promote and its show is essentially 21/2 hours of greatest hits. The most "recent" song on the set list was released more than two decades ago (1987's "Big Love").

But yet, the Mac on Wednesday brought a passion and enthusiasm to the stage that was lacking during their 2003 stop in Salt Lake City.

This time around, Fleetwood Mac had a renewed energy as they opened the show with the upbeat "Monday Morning" followed by what had been the traditional opener, "The Chain."

"Salt Lake City, we are thankful you came here tonight to be with us," announced vocalist, guitarist and Master of Ceremonies for the evening Lindsey Buckingham.

Buckingham raised the enthusiasm of the crowd by handling the rocker numbers of the evening, including "I Know I'm Not Wrong" and "Tusk," and showcased his brilliant finger-picking guitar style on "Big Love" and "I'm So Afraid."

But the real magic of Fleetwood Mac is still the deep, raspy, golden voice of Stevie Nicks. Nicks, who turned 61 last week, still sings with a power and emotion in each song that most women half her age can't match.

Some of Nicks' numbers, such as "Dreams," "Rhiannon" and a magnificent "Gold Dust Woman," were among the highlights of the entire evening. Nicks, wore her traditional black dress, several different shawls throughout the evening and one black glove for most of the night as the twirled and gripped her microphone stand draped with scarves and chains.

Both Nicks and Buckingham, who walked onto the stage hand-in-hand, took turns sharing stories about the origins of some of the songs. Nicks introduced "Gypsy" as relating to the time she and Buckingham lived in San Francisco and "the most amazing scene" in music and culture between 1965 and 1971. She also talked about her brief time living in Salt Lake City when she was 13 and dedicated "Landslide" to her lifelong friend Karen Thornhill, who still lives in Utah.

Buckingham talked about the band's much publicized relationship history and the making of songs off 1977's "Rumors," one of the biggest selling albums of all time. It was an album about optimism, humor and aggression, and one that band members had to live through a number of "emotional opposites" to record, said Buckingham before launching into "Second Hand News," the first song recorded for the album, and one of eight "Rumors" songs and outtakes performed Wednesday.

Buckingham and Nicks faced each other as they sang "Sara," another song about relationships though not involving Nicks and Buckingham, though the two hugged at the end.

Mick Fleetwood and John McVie provided the backbone rhythm section, as they have for over 40 years.

The only thing that was missing from Wednesday's show was the soulful voice of Christine McVie who retired from touring after the 1997 reunion tour. Her contribution was missed particularly on "Say You Love Me."

Nicks and Buckingham each contributed a song from their solo albums, Buckingham playing "Go Insane," the title track from his 1984 album. And Nicks sang her hit "Stand Back" from 1983's "The Wild Heart."

A pleasant surprise was "Storms" off the "Tusk" album, a song that had never been played live prior to this tour.

Fleetwood Mac ended the night heavy on the "Rumors" album again, including "Go Your Own Way," which found Nicks moving around stage with her tambourine and top hat, and "Don't Stop."

Overall, the Mac proved Wednesday night that they still had a connection with the music that so many fans spent most of their lives listening to, and made one believe they might still be able to this for years to come.

ROCK TO WINEMAKER

Mick Fleetwood: Musician and Winemaker.
KCPW.ORG
(KCPW News) Mention the name Mick Fleetwood to most and they'll recognize him as the co-founder and drummer of the rock band Fleetwood Mac. But Fleetwood is making other headlines both on stage and off. He's just released an album of blues songs with the aptly titled Mick Fleetwood Blues Band, and he is entrenched in the business of selling his own line of fine wines. Fleetwood is in Salt Lake City for a Fleetwood Mac concert tonight at Energy Solutions Arena. He sat down with KCPW's Eric Ray to chat about how he went from rock star to winemaker.

Oh Stevie, how could you?

Fleetwood Mac made a long-awaited return to LA last week, allowing a fact-finding visit to the cheap seats sideways-on to the stage.

This revealed that Stevie Nicks now benefits from a TV next to her microphone, screening lyrics to Go Your Own Way, Dreams, and all the other old hits.

Ms Nicks is 61, and those years of rocking and rolling have no doubt taken their toll on her memory. But an autocue feels rum: Mac fans are surely entitled to expect better than a glorified version of karaoke.

[ I say who cares.... as long as she's present and singing away...]

RETURN OF THE MAC

AFTER revealing the band’s tentative plans to tour the UK later this year, bizarrely on The One Show of all places, ‘70s rock survivors Fleetwood Mac have confirmed they’ll play Manchester for the first time in six years this autumn.

Currently winding its way across the US, the Rumours World Tour will dock at the M.E.N. Arena on October 27.

Featuring four of the original five who recorded the 1977 landmark album (Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, Christine McVie no longer tours), the quartet will be playing tracks from the record alongside hits from their substantial back-catalogue.

Including the hit singles Go Your Own Way, Dreams, Don’t Stop and You Make Loving Fun, the Grammy Award-winning Rumours has gone on to sell over 25 million copies worldwide.

And in conjunction with the tour, it will be re-released as part of a special CD/DVD box set, which will include previously unreleased tracks recorded during the making of the album.

Formed in 1967 by blue-rocks magician Peter Green, drummer and band custodian Fleetwood remains the only original member.

Fleetwood Mac play the M.E.N. Arena on Tuesday, October 27. £45, £60, £75. Fully seated show. Tickets go on sale on Friday, June 5 at 9am. Call 0844 847 8000.

FLEETWOOD MAC BOOKED FOR SHEFFIELD ARENA

By David Dunn
The Star

FLEETWOOD Mac - one of the most successful bands of all time - are to make their Sheffield Arena debut this winter.

The group featuring Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Lindsey Buckingham will bring their global hits Go Your Own Way, Everywhere and Don't Stop and more on Monday November 2 and tickets go on general sale at 9am this Friday.

1967, the rhythm section of McVie and Fleetwood has never changed although the line-up featuring Buckingham and late 70s sex symbol Nicks was the most successful, producing the 25 million-selling classic album Rumours.

The band began as a traditional British blues band with Peter Green but amid personnel changes relocated to California in 1974 where it added Buckingham and Nicks.

Their first studio offering Fleetwood Mac sold five million copies and in spite of the well documented separation of Buckingham and Nicks the band went on to make the Grammy Award-winning Rumours.

Although the band has never managed to match the success of that, it produced the ambitious and experimental Tusk, Mirage and 1987's Tango In The Night which tendered major hits Little Lies, Seven Wonders and Everywhere.

In 1998 the band was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame where it played an acoustic set that Buckingham, now a prolific solo artist, insisted would be its swan song.

The band have sold more than 100 million albums and remain one of the most popular rock bands in history.

Tickets for the reunion tour are expected to sell quickly, even with a price tag of £45 to £75, plus booking fee. Tickets are available online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk, in person at the arena box office and by phone on 0114 256 5656.
