Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 album Rumours wasn’t so much a rock record as a fully fledged soap opera.
Fuelled by drugs and tangled romances, it chronicled the five members’ raw emotions with classic songs like Don’t Stop, Go Your Own Way and Dreams.
Keyboardist Christine McVie described the sessions as a ‘nightly cocktail party’ while drummer Mick Fleetwood said they were ‘crucifyingly difficult’.
But the Anglo-Americans pressed on to finish ‘the most important album we ever made’.
On Monday — 35 years after its original release — Rumours is back. The landmark album is being re-issued in two packages with bonus material, out-takes and live recordings to mark the band’s reunion tour (UK dates are expected to be in late September).
A three-CD version, selling at around £12, contains the original album, bonus tracks and the live material. For Mac maniacs, a ‘deluxe’ edition, close to £50, is bolstered by further outtakes, a DVD and copy of Rumours on vinyl.
So how does it all stand up three-and-a-half decades on? Very well indeed. Echoes of the album’s radio-friendly hooks and harmonies can now be heard in modern bands like The Pierces and Haim.
The album has even been the focus of a TV episode of Glee, while an a cappella cover of Don’t Stop is currently heard on a Seat cars’ advert.
The main reason why Rumours continues to fascinate is the way it vividly documents the band’s twisted relationships. Mick was in the throes of a painful divorce from Jenny Boyd and would go on to have an affair with Mac singer Stevie Nicks.
Bassist John McVie and keyboardist Christine had just broken up after eight years of marriage, while Stevie and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham were heading for the rocks following a five-year romance.
The band poured the trauma into their writing: Buckingham’s Go Your Own Way was a hurtful parting shot at Nicks, who responded with Dreams; Christine McVie aimed Don’t Stop at John to show him how she had moved on; he suggested the title Rumours because the group, without admitting it, were all writing songs about each other.
The songs pushed founder members Mick and John away from their roots in British blues to something that sounds contemporary even today.
The rollicking Don’t Stop remains a radio staple while The Chain is the BBC’s theme tune for its Formula 1 coverage.
Stevie once told me: ‘What I remember aren’t the bad nights when we weren’t speaking to one another but the night Dreams was written.
'I walked in and handed a rough cassette to Lindsey. He was mad with me at the time but he played it and looked up at me and smiled.
‘We knew what was going on was very sad. We were couples who couldn’t make it through the perils of fame but we still looked on each other with a lot of respect. It was a shame we had to break up but we got Go Your Own Way and Dreams out of it all. How upset can you be about that?’
The bonus material is strong — especially the songs left off the original album. Of the alternate versions of album tracks, the picks are an early incarnation of Dreams and a new version of I Don’t Want To Know. Less impressive are the jam sessions on the deluxe edition, while the live songs from 1977 don’t add anything.
But the real joys are to be found by listening again to the original, 39-minute album. It’s no wonder Fleetwood Mac were so keen to overcome the tribulations and finish a record with some of the catchiest, most intriguing songs of the Seventies.

Fleetwood Mac’s landmark album ‘Rumours’ gets re-released next week, and we thought we’d look back at the album to figure out just why it’s so revered throughout the musical community, to the point that it even got its own episode of Glee dedicated to it.
Many albums have a difficult start in life, but Rumours might just be one of the most tumultuous productions ever to pull through the difficulty and pull out the other side. The production of the album was so filled with problems during production it’s a miracle that it even got made, let alone became the unifying factor that would keep the band together for years to come.
Fleetwood Mac was a band built on relationships, with not one, but two couples in the five person group. 1977 though saw both partnerships break down though, with bassist John McVie and keyboardist Christine McVie filing for divorce and vocalist Stevie Nicks leaving guitarist Lindsay Buckingham for the arms of drummer Mick Fleetwood.

Fleetwood Mac members Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood talked to OTRC.com about their upcoming 2013 tour, and how they've managed to maintain their fan following for so long.
"You can't really stop," Nicks told OTRC.com on January 24. "I have a friend, Doug Morris, who said to me once, 'when you retire, you just get small.' And I think that's really true - I love that. So, you can't just go on a three year vacation, because when you come back, it won't be there. And that's why a lot of the big bands that still try to play, and they don't play for eight or nine years, and then they try to play - they're not good anymore."
Nicks went on to say that while rehearsals are slated to start in February, the group is still debating on what the official set list will be.
"We're all just thinking now, and going over in our heads what, you know, which songs," Nicks said. "Because, there are those specific 10 songs, 12 songs, whatever, that you play because you - because the audience really wants to hear them, and because they are the foundation of the band, and because they are the reason we all have really nice houses. So, those are there. But beyond that, we have the other songs to play with, so it's really fun, but we don't really know yet because we haven't started, so it's really mysterious."
Lindsey Buckingham, the veteran guitarist, who once shared a romantic relationship with Nicks, explained how the close, songwriting pair are rediscovering their bond.
"We are still somehow inventing new dynamics within the two of us," Buckingham explained of his friendship with Nicks. "We are still discovering things about each other. Perhaps we are still getting back to things we once had ... It just makes it very sweet, that after all these years, we can perhaps now we can really start to address some of the love that's always been there, and some of the things that we have shared."

Last month Fleetwood Mac announced a series of arena dates beginning in April. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees will kick off their first tour in three years with a show in Columbus, OH on April 4 before making their way through the United States and Canada, including stops at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The tour coincides with the 35th anniversary of the release of Fleetwood Mac’s classic album Rumors. When the group’s Lindsey Buckingham began doing press in conjunction with these dates, we enlisted Alex Bleeker (Real Estate, Alex Bleeker and the Freaks) to interview Buckingham.
In the winter of 2007 I came home from college wielding a freshly burned copy of Rumors; I was obsessed. Of course I had heard most of the music before, almost every song had been a radio hit. For some reason, however, even the familiar tunes sounded new to me. Fleetwood Mac was suddenly re-contextualized. The production was flawless, the hooks – irresistible, and the lyrics were haunting and universal.
At an obligatory meeting of old High School friends and future band mates in my Mom’s basement, we passed the bong and listened to Fleetwood Mac. My musical selection garnered sceptical reactions at best. “I don’t know dude, some of this stuff is pretty cheesy,” somebody quipped. You see, Fleetwood Mac had never been too popular with the “alternative” crowd. In spite of their overwhelming commercial success the Mac have never been “cool” ….until now.
In the late 70s Fleetwood Mac was a symbol of rock excess; the tyranny against which early punk and new wave fans struggled to rebel. But it’s 2012 now, and the music has broken free from the shackles of social stigma. Fleetwood Mac’s sweet melodic power and influence can not be denied. On the road with Real Estate, I’ve travelled all over the world, and met countless artists and musicians. I can safely say that a Fleetwood Mac influence is a universal given… it’s like saying that you like the Beatles.
Perhaps even more staggering is the re-emergence of Lindsey Buckingham as a solo artist. Buckingham’s own music, while still catchy, has never been afraid to take experimental risks. His body of work is the ever elusive blend of accessible and challenging. In this era of stale rock reunions, Buckingham continues to make work like this. The 21st century has revealed him to be a true legacy artist to be admired.
Speaking with Lindsey was a rare treat. He was well grounded and casual, but carried the confidence of someone who knows that the world has finally caught up with his true brilliance.

After over four decades together, Fleetwood Mac is still thriving. The band is re-releasing their album Rumours and will soon be embarking on a newly expanded North American tour. Despite bumps along the way, lead singer Stevie Nicks partially credits the band's recent reconnection to her mother's passing.
Fleetwood Mac has been on many hiatuses throughout the years, which the band says has become an almost necessary cyclical process for them to break off and embark on solo endeavors amid spurts of recording and touring together.
A few years after the band wrapped its Unleashed tour, it is back together for another tour, which Nicks mainly credits to the passing of her mother, Barbara, in late 2011.
"My mom passed away a year and two months ago, so Lindsey (Buckingham, guitarist) and I have talked a lot about that," Nicks said in a sit-down with Buckingham and drummer Mick Fleetwood (bassist John McVie was not present).
"She was the last of the Old Guard, so it's been a little bit shocking for all of us, but I think in a strange sort of way it's kind of really reconnected us in a way because we miss her and we wish she wasn't gone. She loved Lindsey and she loved Mick, and she loved me. ...Losing Barbara has really, I think, brought us back together in a lot of ways."
While they've recently joined back together for the Fleetwood Mac Live 2013 tour--which was recently extended an additional twelve shows due to the high volume of demand for the shows-- Nicks, who has maintained a steady solo career over the years, divulged that it's only natural that the band will be on hiatus once again.
"It is like a marriage and if you're together 24 hours a day every single day, no matter how much you care about somebody, you need a break," she said. "So, we take that three-year break and it seems to work really beautifully for us."
In addition to the band's 2013 tour, it is also re-releasing its 1977 album Rumours, which has become one of the best-selling albums of all time with an astonishing 40 million estimated records sold. The reissued album will feature live recordings and previously unreleased music.

Planet Rock can exclusively reveal that Mick Fleetwood is trying to persuade Christine McVie to re-join Fleetwood Mac.
McVie retired from the band in the late 1990’s and hasn’t performed with them since.
He also confirmed that Fleetwood Mac will announce the European leg of their forthcoming world tour in the coming weeks.
Mick told Planet Rock’s Darren Redick, "I’m really looking forward to reconnecting with my sister, Christine McVie, and that’s sort of a lovely, nice thing to be doing. Getting her out of the English cold there for a few weeks... and me and Chris will be flying back [to Mick’s home in Hawaii] after my work in London”.
Darren asked Mick if Christine would be with them for their shows in the UK and Mick went on to say, "I would love that and I would welcome that as we all would and I truly hope that happens. And it might just be the case and I will take that to the fore and be reminded that a lot of people would love to see that happen. It would be an emotionally charged moment that would be lovely to have happen. And I know everyone in the band would welcome that. So you never know!”.
As far as the world tour goes, Fleetwood Mac look likely to be in England by the autumn. Mick said,
"We’re going to be touring in September and October in England and in Europe, we’re going on a massive world tour, which is getting more massive by the second, and those shows will be announced in the next few days”.

Fleetwood Mac prepares to go on tour again
Fleetwood Mac is preparing to go on a big arena tour, including stops in late May at Anaheim's Honda Center and the Hollywood Bowl.
"It makes you stay young. It makes you stay vibrant. We're in a wonderful, mysterious, crazy band. So we get to stay young because of this," said Stevie Nicks.
On the new tour, you will hear the songs that make up the foundation of the band, but it may have a different feel to it, according to Lindsey Buckingham.
"It's what you do around the edges, the colors that you use to sort of accent everything else that makes the set different," Buckingham said.
A deluxe re-issue of "Rumours" comes out next week.
