Lindsey Buckingham "The ever youthful 64-year old singer/ guitarist fizzed and buzzed through his trip down memory lane"

Lindsey Buckingham Talks Music, Sky Arts One
AOR craftsman on how he sprinkled fairy dust over Fleetwood Mac's songs
by Russ Coffey
The Arts Desk

Sometimes TV doesn’t need to be “challenging” or “groundbreaking” to be thoroughly worthwhile. The first episode of Sky Arts new “…talks music” series saw the familar format of a live, seated interview applied to one of pop music’s highest achievers: Lyndsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac. TV producer, Malcolm Gerrie led proceedings in an attractive theatre in front of an audience of students. Most memorable were some blistering live demonstrations of Buckingham’s craft.

Gerrie’s interview style may have been a little more One Show than Parkinson but still he kept the singer/guitarist well at ease. The ever-youthful 64-year-old fizzed and buzzed through his trip down memory lane. First, we learnt how he met Stephanie “Stevie” Nicks at high school when he was a music geek in the junior year, and she a feisty free spirit in the year above. The two met again a couple of years later and a romantic and musical union blossomed. After joining Buckingham's college band, the two then split to form Buckingham-Nicks.The singer's description of moving down to LA and scoring a record deal after six months conjured up images of palm trees and wide-eyed hope. Then, after hearing how Mick Fleetwood hired them almost on a whim, one imagined wild stories of Fleetwood Mac’s legendary excess to be just around the corner.

In the end, however, we didn’t get much gossip - at least not directly. Buckingham told us in broad terms how the studio during the recording of Rumours consisted of two pairs of feuding exes and a whole lot of drugs. But, for all the dirt he didn't spill about the personal dynamics, his manner and expression gave a vivid sense of the tension. Moreover, his dissection on the nuts and bolts of the album revealed the barbed subtexts to the words. Gerrie’s cue card then prompted a question on how the band survived the emotional and physical turmoil of this period. Buckingham’s reply was “youthful resilience”.

That still didn’t explain why he now look healthier than the others. Maybe it is just genetic? Buckingham’s healthy tan and cheerful philosophising certainy seemed like the product of alpha genes. Also his Californian manners betrayed no sense of the volatilite and difficult nature some have accused him of. Instead the impression he gave was of a well-centred man of huge natural talent - a craftsman whose forte is arranging and completing half-finished ideas. The various demonstrations he gave on an acoustic guitar prompted open-mouthed expressions of awe from the young audience. His rendition of "Big Love" was stunning.

Of course, after Rumours, the only way was down. When given the job of producing the follow-up, Tusk, Buckingham said he didn’t think it was worth even trying to compete with what had gone before. In a series of mischievous understatements he described how, despite the album being a creative success, the others took against him for his role in making it a, relative, commercial flop.

So, he then decided to look to solo albums for his personal expression. He called his own stuff the “small machine”, where instead of “bringing a script to the actors” he was able to “splash paint on canvass like an abstract artist”. At the end Gerrie asked Buckingham what his favourite Fleetwood Mac album was. The response was, predictably, Tusk. Unsurprisingly for such a thoroughly well-mannered chap, when then asked about his greatest achievement he said it was his children. Edgy stuff this series may not be but with the right guests – Tony Bennett next up looks promising – expect it to provide reliably fascinating chat that focuses on the music.

Talks Music will air again in the UK on Sky Arts 1 November 13th at 10:30pm and November 16th at 8:00pm and November 17th at 11:30am

Sky Arts’ Talks Music Show Debuts Monday, 11th November
Intimate music strand brings "masterclass" treatment to Nile Rodgers, Ray Davies, Graham Nash and Jeff Beck. First up: Lindsey Buckingham

A ROOM, TWO CHAIRS, a musician and instrument, an audience drawn from the ranks of earnest young musicians and producers, and a host with a ridiculous track record in music TV. Malcolm Gerrie, all-time music telly hall-of-famer having produced irreverent '80s trailblazer The Tube, '90s Britpop showcase The White Room and more, is the man asking the questions on Sky Arts 1 HD's Talks Music, TV's latest attempt to dive deep into the minds of legendary musos.

Debuting at 9pm next Monday, November 11, subject/victim #1 is Fleetwood Mac maestro Lindsey Buckingham (pictured above), and MOJO's preview "screener" promised a revealing programme where Buckingham’s still-febrile intensity comes through loud and clear.

Over an hour prog that fair skips by, Buckingham gets the axe out for The Chain, Big Love and other classics. Although, just like anyone who’s ever sat with an artist in an "intimate environment" while they wail on their thing, Gerrie’s not quite sure what to do with himself, and settles for grinning awkwardly while slapping his thigh in time. Something to look at for later episodes, perhaps.

Stevie Nicks In Your Dreams DVD Bundle $34.99. Limited quantity of 1000 - Sold Out

Well that didn't take long!  With an initial 500 DVD bundles released early Thursday evening quickly selling out within an hour, Warner Bros. topped up the offer to 1,000 Friday evening and reduced the number of copies per order down to one whereas the first 500 were offered with no limit to the number you could pre-order. The additional 500 bundles again quickly sold within a few hours. Will there be more?  I'm not sure, but it clearly shows that there is demand for this special package.

The film can still be pre-ordered via Warner Bros. for $18.99 but it's without the added bonus material - and it is available to those outside of North America, but will it work in your DVD player? The AmazonUS version indicates it's a Region 1 DVD which limits its play ability to North American configured DVD players. I'm assuming the Warner version is compatible to your neck of the woods if you are outside of North America as it doesn't indicate otherwise on their website.

Aside from Warner Bros., AmazonUSAmazon Canada and Barnes and Noble in the US appear to be the only other ways to pre-order the DVD so far. Certainly at some point the film will be available on other Amazon sites around the world to accommodate Stevie's fans outside of North America who are just as eager to see the documentary and have a physical copy. The film will premiere in Australia at the Brisbane International Film Festival on November 13th and hopefully it too will be available to purchase in Australia and New Zealand shortly afterwards.  The film premiered in September in the UK with the press release indicating availability on VOD (Video on Demand) and DVD in November.  AmazonUK haven't listed the DVD yet... but we're only part way through November so there is still time for it to show up.

Initially released digitally on itunes and via Stevie and Dave's inyourdreamsmovie.com website back in May, to fans in North America, it's been a long wait for the physical release of this DVD - hopefully Stevie's record company makes this available to the widest possible audience it can, and early. With everyone gearing up for the holiday season, it's actually the perfect time to get this out!

Stevie will be at Barnes and Noble at The Grove in Los Angeles on December 4th at 7pm for a DVD signing for copies of the film purchased that day.

Stevie Nicks at #BIFF to present "In Your Dreams" called off... Film screening goes ahead

Update: Stevie Nicks: In Your Dreams special screening 13 Nov 13
Since the cancellation announcement of Fleetwood Mac’s tour, we understand everyone must be anxious to find out whether Stevie Nicks is still attending BIFF. Whilst we were really sorry to hear about John McVie and would like to wish him a speedy recovery, we did however extend an invitation to Stevie Nicks to present her film Stevie Nicks: In Your Dreams as planned. We were hoping we could make this happen and Stevie would love to have been with us however, despite our best endeavours we are unable to proceed. Stevie is writing a personal message to BIFF which we will share with you.

Will Stevie be in the Coven tonight...

The 5th episode of American Horror Story: Coven airs tonight on FX at 10|9pm central

Burn, Witch, Burn!
Misty Day who has a deep affinity for Stevie Nicks, who she believes is a witch, returns in tonights episode. The question is what Stevie Nicks / Fleetwood Mac tune will she be grooving to tonight - if any? Misty appeared in episode two and three but was absent from episode four. American Horror Story is reportedly using eight Stevie tracks over the course of this thirteen episode season and so far we've heard three. Episode two featured "Edge of Seventeen" and "Rhiannon". Episode three featured "Sara". With nine episodes remaining to air this season, including tonight, there are five Stevie tracks yet to be heard.

Tune in tonight to find out.

Mojo Interview: Stevie Nicks "The Texas kid who became a “Fleetwood Mac rock star"

Mojo Interview: Stevie Nicks (Dec 2013)
Interview by JAMES McNAIR

The Texas kid who became a “Fleetwood Mac rock star”, Stevie Nicks has survided romantic pain, chemical excess and a night in Prince’s purple kitchen. Her secret? “Being mysterious is very attractive.”

WITH ITS VIEWS OF THE: PALATIAL architecture along London’s Victoria Embankment, the Corinthia hotel is a very Stevie Nicks establishment. Formerly the Metropole, it was once home to saucy wartime liaisons and secret (service) assignations. However, there was a time when the penthouse suite’s current occupant could have trumped any of the Metropole’s former residents for illicit adventure…

“I was up at 6.30,” says Nicks, by way of introduction, cursing her jet lag in a low drawl. “I don’t do early” This is not as inauspicious a start as it might first seem. Even at 65, and after countless interrogations over the years, Fleetwood Mac‘s femme fatale still loves to unpack the details of her epic life. ”That ‘s why I’m here,” she says, her soft brown eyes peering over dark tinted glasses. She pulls up a footstool and draws a cushion to her chest. “That’s why I got the fireplace so sweet for us.”

Fleetwood Mac reasserts themselves as a still relevant and superstar band in 2013 http://twitpic.com/djvbii

Album Review: Fleetwood Mac, Extended Play
By Jackson Sinnenberg
Rating: 9.0/10

It seems like Fleetwood Mac make some of their best music in periods of great volatility. Rumours, the band’s 1977 masterpiece, was written and recorded during a time when the band’s personal lives were in the toilet. The Mac’s latest release, the four song EP Extended Play, was recorded in another bout of uncertainty, with multiples recording projects being derailed by Stevie Nicks’s and Lindsey Buckingham’s solo careers. Like during Rumours, the band somehow remains at their most focused during a storm, and has produced an incredible record.

One of the best things about Extended Play is that it sounds like Fleetwood Mac. In an era where the music industry seems to be pressing for more homogenization, it is great to hear a band that sounds like themselves. The EP’s lead, and best, track “Sad Angel,” is a classic Mac song of the highest caliber, reminiscent of many of the tracks from the beginning of the Buckingham-Nicks era Mac. Buckingham’s vocals effortlessly blend with Nicks’s, showing the potency of this long partnership.

Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks insists her chemistry with Lindsey Buckingham is real

Fleetwood Mac have real chemistry
November 2nd
By: Doug Fredricksen
Starpulse

Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks insists her chemistry with Lindsey Buckingham is real.

The 'Landslide' hitmaker admits the bond between the pair has been "fake" during performances on previous tours but they are now as close as they were when we first met.

Stevie, 65, told Mojo Magazine: "My cousin John has known Lindsey and I since 1968.

"He told me, "When I saw you and Lindsey play with Fleetwood Mac in 2009, there was nothing between you.

"It was as if you were thinking, 'What shall I get from room service? Grilled cheese? Tomato soup?'

"Hammy wasn't the word for Lindsey and I in 2009 - it was totally fake.

"But what you see on stage now is not fake. It is loving, and it is as close to those two people who met as teenagers as you could hope for."

Stevie was 16 when she was first introduced to Lindsey, then 17, at a party in San Francisco and started making music together two years later.

The pair posed naked on the cover of their Buckingham Nicks album, made before Fleetwood Mac was
formed, and Stevie was "terrified".

Stevie revealed: "I could not have been more terrified if you'd asked me to jump off a speeding train.

"Lindsey was like, 'Oh, come on - this is art. Don't be a child!' I thought, 'Who are you? Don't you know me?'."

She hid the picture from her parents and admits they were less than impressed when they saw it.

Stevie said: "When the record came out and I saw my father it was, 'Why didn't you just say no, Stevie?' I said, 'Daddy, I don't know. I didn't feel like I had a choice - I'm so sorry'. I learned a big lesson that day."

Fleetwood Mac "Boston" - 3CD Live Recording Box Set - New Release

This will excite those that enjoyed the earlier incarnation of Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green, Danny Kirwin and Jeremy Spencer.

3CD Set in round box, remastered vintage live recordings of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. Earlier this year the current incarnation of Fleetwood Mac embarked on a massive world tour with dates in North America followed by gigs around Europe. These dates saw the band playing sold-out shows to huge arena crowds and are sure to create another surge of interest in this much-loved band.

Boston is a 3CD set which collects live recordings from an earlier era of the band's colourful history. The set features the classic blues line-up of Mick Fleetwood, Peter Green, Danny Kirwan, John McVie and Jeremy Spencer. Originally recorded at the Boston Tea Party venue over three nights in February 1970, for a planned release later the same year, these recordings were left in the can, unissued, following leader Peter Green's sudden decision to leave the band a few weeks after the dates. Tracks from the shows were eventually released in various forms in the mid-80s but these releases were blighted by poor sound sources. The discovery of the original 8-track tapes and a number of previously unreleased tracks in the late 90s allowed the material to be re-mixed, re-mastered, and substantially overhauled for release on 3 separate CD volumes. This new set brings together all of these re-mastered recordings a 3CD set to present a complete document of these historic shows. The set is packaged in a round box with a 24 page book and 5 beer mats. The booklet contains new sleeve notes and reworked artwork.
