Video: Mick Fleetwood on meeting Stevie Nicks for the first time

Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood chronicles life in "Play On"
CBS This Morning

Mick Fleetwood on meeting Stevie Nicks for the first time: She's magnetic and gorgeous, but it was a musical dialogue that struck me.

Fleetwood Mac has sold more than 140 million records worldwide. The supergroup is known for its music, and for its wild ways off stage, too. Now in a new memoir drummer and bandleader Mick Fleetwood looks back at a long journey.

For nearly 50 years Mick Fleetwood has provided the beat and backbone for one of the world's most successful bands.

At just 15 years old, Fleetwood left home for London to become a drummer. There, he met bassist John McVie, forming a lifelong friendship and the band that would bear their names.

For eight years, through drugs, discord and affairs, they endured a constantly changing lineup.

They finally struck the right chord with McVie's wife, Christine, and Americans Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.

While their hard-partying became the stuff of rock and roll legend, it was their infamous love affairs that inspired "Rumours." The 1977 album sat at number one for 31 weeks and is the ninth best-selling album of all time.

Hits like "Go Your Own Way" captured their turmoil, which ultimately proved to be too much.

Fleetwood's new memoir, "Play On," chronicles the band's often painful past -- with a happy ending.

For the first time in 16 years, the band is back together and the beat goes on.

For many people, the songs of Fleetwood Mac are the sounds of the sixties and seventies, but they were a band who have been almost as famous for their relationships and break ups as their music.

The drummer, and founder member, Mick Fleetwood has steered the band through the trials and tribulations and line-up changes ever since.

He told BBC Breakfast that he still never plays a song the same way twice and spoke about life in Fleetwood Mac and the rumours that used to surround them.

TODAY: Stevie Nicks FACEBOOK Q&A (Nov 5th 3:45 PM EST)

Check this out!

Stevie week continues on Wednesday November 5th with a Facebook Q&A beginning at 3:45pm ET.

Tonight she's on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Tuesday morning she's on "Today" with Kathie Lee and Hoda (10-11am hour) and now a Facebook Q&A on Wednesday - which is a FIRST!!

Head on over to her official Facebook Page... Like it... and check in on Wednesday afternoon.  This is pretty exciting actually! She's never done anything like this before. Think of something cool to ask her other than the usual questions which she's answered a million times before.  She's obviously promoting the new album, so maybe now that you've had a month to listen to it, you are left with questions about something on the album, or a song... or maybe it's about what she plans on doing in the future solo wise.

After 16 long years, the warm and smoky voice of Christine McVie was heard once again on the live stage, ensuring a sell-out crowd at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC for the return of the now fully intact Fleetwood Mac. The full band consisting of Mick Fleetwood (drums), Lindsey Buckingham (guitar/vocals) and John McVie (bass) along with Christine McVie on vocals and keys, and Stevie Nicks on vocals sounded wonderful.

Concert Review: Fleetwood Mac begins new chapter with show at the XL Center in Hartford

HARTFORD _ On tour with core member Christine McVie for the first time in 16 years, classic rock group Fleetwood Mac performed at the XL Center on Saturday night, offering up a two-and-a-half hour, 24 song set.

While the show didn't appear to be a complete sell-out, there were scattered empty seats here and there, it was a representative and re-energized crowd that came to view the first leg of the legendary group's "On with the Show" tour.

The inclusion of McVie adds another vocal and a few more songs to the set list but her real value is giving the band another reason to tour and motivation for the audience to come out for another go around.

Every brand needs a story and this time out for the Fleetwood Mac brand the best and only new story to tell is the reunion with the popular McVie.

With a dramatic flair, the group opened with "The Chain," a relationship song that served as an affirmation of the reunited parts with the refrain "chain, keep us together."  McVie chimed in next with "You Make Lovin' Fun," and the narrative began to unfold.

Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham said the return of McVie solidified this highly dysfunctional group of former lovers, bandmates, and friends as not only survivors, but as an entity that will continue to thrive and grow.

"Her return begins a brand new chapter for us," he said. "One that will be both profound and prolific."

Musically the show was a series of highlights with only a handful of misses. "Dreams" came off as tired while songs like "Sisters of the Moon," and "I'm So Afraid" could have been left off the set list.

The band, backed by an extra drummer, guitarist, keyboard player, and three vocalists, breathed life into songs like "Second Hand News," Seven Wonders," and "Gold Dust Woman."

The centerpiece of the performance kicked off with Lindsey Buckingham's solo acoustic version of "Big Love," with the guitarist picking and strumming up an orchestral mix with his guitar while adding some vocal effects to create a full band sound.

He was joined by Stevie Nicks for "Landslide" and an even more poignant version of "Never Going Back," delivered as a plaintive ballad.

The duet was a strong point of the performance and it's not too far-fetched to think a Buckingham-Nicks tour would be the natural follow-up story to tell once this tour is complete.

Nicks got completely untracked while trying to introduce "Gypsy," the only speed bump on the road to a strong finish that featured the hit "Go Your Own Way."

The double encore included the obligatory Mick Fleetwood percussion solo, the hit "Silver Spring," and McVie's piano-laden "Songbird."

THE CHAIN
Notice near the end of the song John's bass cuts out.. he calls one of the techs to the stage to fix... and the song ends without the sound of his bass parts. Good thing it didn't cut out during his big moment during the song.
