Mick Fleetwood Confirms "Storms" in the setlist

Musicradar.com
Joe Bosso, Thu 29 Jan 2009

The renowned drummer on the new tour

Mick Confirmed:

"Storms" is in the setlist, "Oh Well" is back in the set.  "Go Insane" done with a full Band and an accoustic "Say You Love Me" with the band up front.

There's always been an elusive quality to Mick Fleetwood's drumming. One can literally hear different sounds, patterns and textures in his playing with each listen - an assessment Fleetwood himself agrees with.

"I honestly don't know how I do it," Fleetwood says, laughing. "I think it's because I'm a blues-based drummer playing rock 'n' roll and pop music. To me, I respond to a vibe, a certain musical heartbeat. Of course, it creates problems when I play something and I'm asked to repeat it. The whole thing is a mystery to me."

The Greatest Hits Tour

Fleetwood can be forgiven for name-checking one of his own albums, as he and the rest of Fleetwood Mac have been busy combing their multi-million-selling catalog in preparation for the Fleetwood Mac 'Unleashed' Greatest Hits Tour, which starts this March and runs until "the people tell us to stop."

For the first time in their 40-year career, Fleetwood Mac are touring without a new album to promote, something Fleetwood sees as a plus during these troubled economic times.

"Everybody is so frightened," he says, "and with good reason. So for us to go out and play the hits, all the songs that people know and love, it's really going to make for a great show. The fans don't have to sit through songs they don't quite know yet, and we get to really dig in and explore our catalog and shake each song for all its worth. To tell you the truth, I think it's the best time to see Fleetwood Mac - we'll transport you to better times."

Or another way of putting it is, Don't Stop Believing. "Never," says Fleetwood. "If any of us ever lost faith the power of this band or our own abilities, it would have been over years ago."

In this exclusive MusicRadar podcast, Mick Fleetwood discusses his early days playing the blues, then talks about the mercurial musical magic he creates in Fleetwood Mac. He even answers a few questions from MusicRadar readers.

Mick talks new Fleetwood Mac tour

Fleetwood Mac and the evolution of NAMM 2009

When asked about the upcoming Fleetwood Mac Tour and whether or not there would be new material played on the tour, Mick says that for the first time they are going out on the road without a new album and they are just celebrating all their previous work - saying that they are "digging deep to songs that they've never done on the road before - old songs".

Kristen is not limited by formulaic design rule

Lindsey describes his wife's aesthetic as "a combination of traditional and edgy"

Lindsey and Kristen Buckingham's home will be featured in the March 2009 issue of Elle Décor.

Two of Kristen's most notable projects in her portfolio of work from the last eight years are period-style homes she designed with an architect and built from the ground up. While vastly divergent in style—one is a 1920s Spanish-style house and the other vintage Normandy—these brand new homes share an authentic aesthetic achieved through careful research and attention to every detail.

Kristen is not limited by formulaic design rules and conventions, but rather has an open, pure and free sense of design and composition that allows her to collaborate with the client in creating elegant, lasting and livable environments.

Chris Isaak Series Debuts February 26th

BIO PREMIERES NEW ORIGINAL TALK AND MUSIC PERFORMANCE SHOW "THE CHRIS ISAAK HOUR"

HOSTED BY GRAMMY NOMINATED SINGER/SONGWRITER CHRIS ISAAK SERIES DEBUTS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26 AT 10PM ET/ 11PM PT AND WILL FEATURE

TRISHA YEARWOOD, STEVIE NICKS AND GLEN CAMPBELL AMONG FIRST GUESTS

New York, NY JANUARY 27, 2009 Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Chris Isaak will host BIO's new original series, "The Chris Isaak Hour" debuting on Thursday, February 26 at 10pm ET/ 11pm PT. Each weekly one hour episode will feature one of music's most popular artists in an intimate studio setting.

"On my show artists get to talk and really get to know my guests and the sound is always great. On most TV shows, artists are asked one question at the end of the show and the sound is a bit shaky," said Chris Isaak. "I also get to share in the thrill of meeting and performing with great artists like Glen Campbell one week and Michael Buble the next. I'm having a blast."

"Chris Isaak is one of the most engaging and talented performers in show business," said Tom Moody, Senior Vice President Program Planning & Acquisitions, A&E Network & BIO. "He is intelligent and funny and has an amazing rapport with his guests in both conversations and musical performances."

Through a blend of storytelling and performance, each guest will be interviewed by Isaak and relive the highs and lows of their careers. Whether it's a spontaneous acoustical performance with Chris during an interview or their full band live on stage, each artist will perform their own material and the songs of those who inspired them. The show's fresh tone and retro style are driven by the singular talent of host Chris Isaak. Intelligent, thoughtful and sometimes irreverent, Isaak's special gift is creating an atmosphere that puts his guests completely at ease.

The series premiere will feature Trisha Yearwood, and will include the first ever performance of Breaking Apart, a duet from Isaak's new album. Additional guests include Stevie Nicks, Smashing Pumpkins, Chicago, Glen Campbell, Michael Buble and Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens).

Isaak previously starred in the critically acclaimed "The Chris Isaak Show" which ran for three seasons. Known for his legendary live shows with his longtime band Silvertone, Isaak has released nine extraordinary albums and been nominated twice for a Grammy. He has also acted in several motion pictures including, Silence of the Lambs, Married to the Mob and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Even his hair has its own fan club. Chris Isaak's new CD of original tunes "Mr. Lucky" is scheduled to be released simultaneously with "The Chris Isaak Hour" on Reprise Records.

"The Chris Isaak Hour" is produced for BIO by Scott Sternberg Productions. Executive Producers are Scott Sternberg, Patrick Murphy, Chris Isaak and Sheryl Louis. Executive producers for BIO are Robert Sharenow, Tom Moody and Andy Berg.

"We did our good friend Stevie Nicks she brought her guitar player the mighty Waddy Wachtel . We got to know them from the tour we did with them last year . I remember during that tour I was listening to the radio and heard "It's so easy to fall in love " by Linda Rhonstadt and when I heard the guitar solo I thought that has to be Waddy . So I asked him and he said that it was him and he sang me his guitar solo !!

We did "Red River valley" which Stevie killed and we did Rickie Nelson's" it's late ""

Nicks confirms "Monday Morning"

"It still gives me goose bumps and it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up," says Stevie Nicks, who is eagerly anticipating the first Fleetwood Mac tour in five years, which kicks off March 1st in Pittsburgh. Nicks tell the Smoking Section that fans can count on renditions of "Gold Dust Woman", "Rhiannon", "Monday Morning" and "Dreams," but the rest of the set has yet to be hammered out.   "It's pretty easy to choose when there's such a great vault to pick from," she says.

Nicks is also thrilled with her two solo releases, out in March. One is The Soundstage Sessions, a CD featuring live versions of some lesser-known jams, and an orchestral version of "Landslide." The other is a DVD called Live In Chicago, where she mixes Mac classics, solo hits and a few covers, including Dave Matthews Band's "Crash Into Me." "I think I did the song justice," she says. "I'd like to do a record where I take boys' songs and twist them into women's songs." Look out."

Buckingham Nicks sound became Fleetwood Mac’s sound

OLD SOUNDS: BUCKINGHAM NICKS
Eden Munro
vueweekly.com

Buckingham Nicks
Buckingham Nicks
(Polydor)

Originally released: 1973 Lyndsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks are inextricably associated with Fleetwood Mac, having recorded and composed with the band since the group’s 1975 self-titled record.

(There have been periods away from the group, but both Buckingham and Nicks are currently back in the fold.)

Having drifted through numerous lineup changes since it’s inception in 1967 when founders guitarist Peter Green and drummer Mick Fleetwood splintered off from John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers—they were joined not long after by the group’s bassist, John McVie—the band had already moved from straightahead blues to a ‘70s rock direction, bolstered by a decent dose of pop melody as player’s joined and departed, bringing with them new influences.

But when Buckingham and Nicks joined the bad, the duo’s influence was immediate and powerful, as the Buckingham Nicks sound became Fleetwood Mac’s sound. That the duo brought a fully-formed soundscape to the band is evident upon listening to Buckingham Nicks’s sole LP, released two years previous to their joining Fleetwood Mac.

Ask the Fleetwood Mac drummer anything

Musicradar.com
Joe Bosso, Fri 23 Jan 2009

Next week Mick Fleetwood is going to sit down with MusicRadar for a podcast interview, and this is your chance to ask him a question.

Although he's best known as the drummer for the hugely popular Fleetwood Mac - their 1977 album Rumours has sold over 30 million copies (not too shabby) - Mick Fleetwood cut his musical teeth in London clubs as a member of John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, where he would meet his eventual rhythm section partner, bassist John McVie.

Fleetwood and McVie had many lean years guiding Fleetwood Mac through a succession of lineup changes. Blues gave way to the sunny sounds of California pop with the addition of guitarist-singer Lindsey Buckingham and starry-eyed vocalist Stevie Nicks, and the rest, of course, is Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame history. From 1975, Fleetwood Mac has been the definitive mega-band: big albums, big tour and even bigger drama.

This March, Fleetwood Mac will embark on their 'Unleashed' greatest hits tour, but it's no last hurrah:They've already indicated a desire to write and record new material as soon as time permits. Speaking of time, next week, Mick Fleetwood is going to sit down with MusicRadar for a podcast interview, and this is your chance to ask him a question.

To ask Mick Fleetwood a question, follow this link (here) and simply add one to the comments section (you'll have to be registered and logged in to do so). The best questions will be asked during the interview next week.

The new dates come on the heels of the first leg of dates announced in December, which have nearly sold out. The tour starts March 1 at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena and winds up May 31 at San Diego’s Cox Arena; the band plays Madison Square Garden March 19 and staples Center May 28. "We are extremely pleased with the Fleetwood Mac sales to date," said LN CEO of Global Music Jason Garner, taking a moment out from printing tickets. "Their success is another example of the strength of the 2009 concert season." This is the band’s first tour in five years. Interestingly, tickets for Live Nation-produced tour will be sold on both livenation.com and ticketmaster.com

FLEETWOOD MAC COMING TO HONDA CENTER IN MAY

Posted by Albert Ching
OCWeekly

The Mac is back! No, not that one. The latest chapter in the British/American rock band's storied, tumultuous history is a greatest hits tour, coinciding with a new, reissued version of their most famous album Rumours. The tour was announced back in December, but with only east coast dates. But now we know that Fleetwood Mac--the current, Christine McVie-less roster of Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood-- is coming our way on May 23, at the Honda Center in Anaheim. They're also coming to LA's Staples Center on May 28. Classic rock lives!

Tickets for both are on sale 10 a.m. next Monday (Jan. 26) through the usual outlets; the Honda Center show is $49.50-$149.50.

Fleetwood Mac announces first local shows in five years

OCRegister
January 14th, 2009
by Ben Wener

No, seriously, I’m really on vacation. But this just came in, so I thought I’d quickly share an addendum to my earlier new-shows post: Fleetwood Mac’s Unleashed Tour, a greatest-hits outing that brings the Hall of Famers back together for the first time in five years, now has Southern California dates — May 23 at Honda Center in Anaheim, May 28 at Staples Center in L.A. and May 31 at Cox Arena in San Diego.

Tickets are expected to go on sale Jan. 26. Rock on, gold dust … er, people.

The photo of Stevie Nicks and John McVie, by Miguel Vasconcellos, is from the Mac’s last O.C. appearance, at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in June 2004.

Twenty-nine more gigs have been added to Fleetwood Mac's hotly anticipated "Unleashed" tour, bringing the total number of announced shows to forty-four.

It's the Mac's first tour in nearly five years, and when we spoke with Stevie Nicks about it a couple weeks ago, she could hardly contain herself.

The thought of hitting the road with Mick, John and Lindsey, she says, "Still gives me goose bumps and it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up."

Fleetwood Mac: May 13, Rexall Place - Edmonton

By: SSPEROUNES
01-14-2009
Edmonton Journal

YES! It’s not a rumour or a sweet little lie — pop-rock veterans Fleetwood Mac are about to make their first Edmonton stop in almost two decades. Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood will perform May 13 at Rexall Place.

It’s part of their Unleashed: Hits tour — featuring classics such as Little Lies, Don’t Stop, Rhiannon, Go Your Own Way, Gypsy, and Big Love. Tickets will go on sale Monday, Jan. 26, according to Ticketmaster.ca, but prices have yet to be announced.

Their last local show was in 1990, when singer/keyboardist Christine McVie was still touring with the group. She stopped in 1994, rejoined two years later, then retired from the road in 1998. There were rumours that Sheryl Crow would stand in for McVie on this upcoming trek, but those have since been quashed by Fleetwood.

____________________________________________________________________

Here is Helen Metella's review of Fleetwood Mac's Dec. 2, 1990 gig at Northlands Coliseum:

So this is Christine McVie's last tour with Fleetwood Mac? What a shame, what a drag. Stevie Nicks' too? Good riddance.

In a consistently irksome and sub-standard performance, the fey, once vocally stunning and visually bewitching lead singer for the British-American supergroup walked through Sunday night's concert in an apathetic, disconnected daze.

Swaddled in what resembled adult-sized christening coats, the admittedly shy, 42-year-old Nicks repeatedly lifted the sides of her skirts so that her silhouette showed and swayed slightly, back to the crowd.

Quite a disappointing departure from the halcyon shows eight and ten years ago when she was crowned the most mesmerizing woman in rock for her dervish-like dances.

More distressing still, she offered dreary, sometimes flat renditions of such shimmering melodies as Rhiannon in a deep register designed to fudge the high notes.

Plagued by throat nodes in the past, perhaps Nicks' careful, unexciting singing form is due to the rigors of a long tour.

But what explains her deliberately and wordlessly padding off-stage through a side curtain after almost every tune only to slowly re-enter a few moments later, like some addled prima donna?

Luckily, Nicks' ridiculously outdated wood-nymph routine and her mystical vocals have never been the sum total of Fleetwood Mac's appeal.

Even with the gifted writer and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham gone - these past three years - from the band's best-known and most successful lineup, the group has meat on every one of its bones.

Keyboardist Christine McVie, an admirably fit and effervescent 46 year old shone on such signature tunes as Say You Love Me with her strong and shapely lead vocals. She also supplied the physical gusto so lacking from Nicks. When the spotlight found her on the front line, the mood of the over 14,000 fans immediately brightened, just as it grew audibly nervous when Nicks took a shaky solo with acoustic guitarist Billy Burnette on the fragile masterpiece Landslide.

Founding members Mick Fleetwood and John McVie formed a bruising duo and a solid foundation for the groove which new members Rick Vito and Burnette laid out from the opening medley.

For World Turning Fleetwood reinvented the obligatory drum solo as Ghana's Isaac Asante, playing congas and hardwood tree branches, duelled with the electronic screeches emanating from the drum pads strapped under Fleetwood's clothes.

As the rhythms grew progressively more tense, wilder, louder and closer together, the band's overwrought lighting system strafed the audience with strobe lights. It added up to nothing in the end, but it was adventurous and different while it lasted.

Ex-Bob Seeger band member Vito lit up his instrument with electrifying lead lines and dove easily into jazzy blues jams from the original Fleetwood Mac's repertoire. Both he and Burnette were also tremendous assets vocally, especially on such comparatively weak tunes as Love is Dangerous, from the current LP Behind The Mask.

But no matter how fine and versatile the band, it was hard to feel fulfilled by this event with the lead singer so wanting.

NEW YORK (AP) - It's been five years since their last tour, but Stevie Nicks says chemistry is still strong among the members of Fleetwood Mac. Nicks says they're gelling as they prepare for their "Unleashed" tour.

She says the magic is still there, and they're all excited to get back out on the road.

The group _ which these days consists of Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham and John McVie _ announced last month they were going on tour for the first time since 2003. Now they've announced new dates that include Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas and Los Angeles.

The tour kicks off March 1 in Pittsburgh.

Abe Vigoda To Release New EP
1/12/2009 By Brock Thiessen

L.A.'s tropical freak punks Abe Vigoda will soon kick-start their 2009 by way of a new five-track EP. On February 17, the tropical-loving quartet will drop Reviver, a release that finds the band "claiming new, darker musical territory" with a "more experimental direction," according to an online statement.

Like the group’s hotly tipped Skeleton LP, this release will come courtesy of Post Present Medium (the imprint run by No Age’s Dean Spunt), which will press this release on both ten-inch and CD. Among Reviver’s five tracks, you’ll find “Don’t Lie,” a song that’s made frequent live appearances, a cover of Wild Heart” by Stevie Nicks and a demo of the Skeleton track “Endless Sleeper.”

Abe Vigoda are reportedly getting ready to kick off another North American tour and are expected to announce their confirmed tour stops shortly. In the meantime, here’s the tracklisting for Reviver:

1. “Don't Lie”
2. “House”
3. “Endless Sleeper”
4. “Wild Heart”
5. “The Reaper”

Stevie has been one of the magical things in my life

Billboard Q&A: Songwriter Rick Nowels
By Hillary Crosley, L.A.
January 09, 2009

After penning songs for the likes of Stevie Nicks and Belinda Carlisle, veteran pop songwriter Rick Nowels used 2008 as the year to write for the urban pop audience. As such, Nowels, who lives in London, traveled to Los Angeles and helped balladeer John Legend write his uptempo song, "Green Light," which currently sits at No. 6 on the R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart. In December, "Green Light" was nominated for a Grammy for best rap/sung collaboration and here Nowels spoke to Billboard.biz about his inspiration, writing "Heaven is a Place on Earth" and why he loves Kanye West's "Love Lockdown."

What was your inspiration for "Green Light?"

We wrote the song a year ago in Los Angeles, I was playing electric guitar and John was singing. My inspiration was Curtis Mayfield and Prince.

When did you begin song writing, what were your first hits?

I started writing songs when I was 13. I did a lot of performing throughout my teens and twenties. Then, in a very random way, Stevie Nicks heard a few of my songs and we ended up writing together.

We had a hit with "I can't wait" in 1986, which led to writing for and producing Belinda Carlisle. Ellen Shipley, another songwriter, and I wrote "Heaven is a Place on Earth" and "Circle in the Sand" and I produced the "Heaven on Earth" album. That set me on the path I am today as a writer/producer.

How would you describe your chemistry with Stevie Nicks?

Working with Stevie has been one of the magical things in my life. When she walks in the room you feel that old school otherworldly rock star thing. When you hear her voice coming through the speakers you know you're hearing greatness. She's a poet. I've been lucky to have written songs with her on every record she's made since "Rock a Little" in 1986. We had a big hit in 1989 called "Rooms on Fire". Stevie opened the door for me in the music business.

Mick Fleetwood has spoken out

DID MOTHERHOOD COST CROW A ROLE IN FLEETWOOD MAC?

SHERYL CROW's role as a single mum may have cost her the chance to join FLEETWOOD MAC.

The supergroup's main man Mick Fleetwood has spoken out about reports suggesting Crow was considered as Christine MCVie's replacement in the band for 2009 tour dates, and admits motherhood may have ruined her chances.

Crow prematurely announced her MAC hopes last year (08), but Fleetwood and his bandmates have since insisted she isn't a part of their plans.

And now Fleetwood says, "Sheryl's an incredible talent, but she's started a family as a single mother and is still promoting her own album.

"Going off into the sunset with Fleetwood MAC for a couple of years just wouldn't have worked."

Stevie Nicks - Smile At You (Youth's Going Home Dub)

Smile At You (Youth's Going Home Dub)

I'm not a huge fan of mashups or remixes from amateurs especially when it comes to Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Nicks songs - and I've never heard of this particular remixer before - but this is actually really good!  They've used the old demo vocal of Stevie's "Smile At You" and I think they've captured the mood of the song pretty well.

(Part 2) Island Rumours Band Show

Mick Fleetwood - The Show

by: Deborah Chesher
Everybody I Shot is Dead

Following the interview, we (me and the assembled 4 person crew) headed over to the Spotlight 29 casino for the big show. It was mid-afternoon so I figured we'd have plenty of time to suss out the venue and lighting, meet with the sound guy and still have time for a nice sit-down meal before Tyler arrived with one more camera and an operator.

Not.

As it turned out, there wasn't a second to spare between hitting the venue and the doors opening. Fortunately, the band was having one last sound check before the show so we could get the logistics down of where to put each camera/operator and what coverage they were responsible for. It was also an opportunity for the sound guy to set up and figure out his levels.

Mick & Rick Interviewed and Filmed in Palm Springs for DVD

Mick Fleetwood - The Interview
by: Deborah Chesher

Deborah was a rock'n'roll photographer back when the music business was about the music. She has just released her new book "Everybody I Shot Is Dead", a collection of her photographs of the musicians who have passed, along with her personal stories.

"Are you able to film an interview with Mick Fleetwood and his band on Saturday afternoon in Palm Springs?"

It was originally a question for me to pass on to Tyler, since he's the one that just got out of NYU film school and has the mad shooting and editing skills. But he had a production meeting on Saturday afternoon for some reality pitch he was editing so I stepped in and organized the shoot. I found a guy with a camera and lighting package that could do it within the budget and, just like that, it was a go.

The purpose of the interview was to create a special features segment for a DVD of a concert they shot in London of Mick and his Blues Band. But then everything changed. The fates stepped in on Thursday and I was asked about the possibility of setting up a five camera shoot for the concert Mick was doing on Saturday night...

FLEETWOOD MAC UNLEASHED: HITS TOUR Nearly six years ago, Fleetwood Mac launched its first tour without deep-voiced Christine McVie since the early ’70s. The loss wound up changing the whole dynamic of the band — and in fascinating ways. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, as the focal points, related to each other in a way they hadn’t since before they joined Mac back in 1975. That pulled different emotions out of the entire band, while also providing more room for Lindsey’s frenzied and astute guitar solos. Now Mac returns with dates March 13 at Nassau Coliseum, the 19th at the Garden and the 21st in the Meadowlands. Miss them at your own peril.
