REVIEW: Lindsey Buckingham - Cendera Center, Fort Worth, TX

Lindsey Buckingham  - Cendera Center, Fort Wort, TX August 24, 2012
By Ron Dempesmeier
Classic Rock Revisited

When you are a voice and a songwriter inside a big machine like Fleetwood Mac, you must feel somewhat anxious to stretch out and impress the world with your own voice. Lindsey Buckingham may have felt like an equal, but he’s been the first among equals when it comes to his influence on the production and arrangements of the mighty Mac. Although his former paramour Stevie Nicks has had the far more popular solo career, the more experimental and technically impressive songs have graced Buckingham’s solo albums.

Appearing in a black leather jacket, black v-neck shirt and dark blue jeans with his still unruly hair (although higher on the forehead), Mr. Buckingham’s lean physique was practically wired as he unleashed cascading torrents of arpeggios and searing solos on the more aggressive songs. There was nearly a standing ovation after each song – the audience at the Cendera Center was into his music and his instrumental and vocal prowess.

His set featured a lot of recent selections from his later solo albums like 2006’s “Under the Skin” or last year’s home recorded “Seeds We Sow”. “Cast Away Dreams” started the evening off peacefully enough with delicate finger picking and yearning lyrics. “Bleed to Love Her” ended with a very long solo that got the audience primed to rock. When Buckingam performed “Not Too Late” his constant picking pattern became almost a pure glissando as he ruminated about his solo career in comparison to belonging to Fleetwood Mac.

"It takes a lot to awe me.  Celebrities don't impress me.  They never have.  But tonight, I was awed.  Hearing Buckingham's screams above the mic made me realize that this was Lindsey Buckingham in our little town.  Lindsey Buckingham!  The man that wrote all of those songs, produced all of those albums, and cranked out what has turned out to be a soundtrack that has played in the background for a good chunk of my life. Wow."

Lindsey Buckingham Walked a Thin Line in Chicago + Fort Worth Recap

Lindsey Buckingham sells out McKinney Performing Arts Center August 23, 2012
By Allen Rich
North Texas E-News
Aug 28, 2012

McKinney -- Every seat in McKinney Performing Arts Center was filled August 23, and for a very good reason. Lindsey Buckingham, the driving force behind Fleetwood Mac was in town for a solo performance.

Buckingham, a member of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is on Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitarists of All Time and the audience in McKinney had an intimate glimpse at the unique finger-picking style that has become this man's calling card.

This wasn't a Fleetwood Mac concert, replete with soft piano and subtle harmonies. This was the sheer unleashed genius of Lindsey Buckingham, one of the most innovative forces in rock and roll in the period between Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Kobain. None of that was lost on the standing-room-only crowd at McKinney Performing Arts Center as an appreciative audience showered Buckingham with standing ovations throughout the concert.

No reviews for this show... But Lindsey slid in "Rock Away Blind" to the set (by audience request) saying "they keep asking me to play this damn song!"  Even though he was reluctant and unprepared to play the song - it sounded great!

Lindsey Buckingham Live in Chicago August 26 & 27, 2012
Lindsey walked a thin line during the second show at City Winery in Chicago last night (August 27th). Not one, but two requests were fulfilled by Lindsey playing a few lines of the Tusk song "Walk a Thin Line" - which from the short video clip I've seen, sounded really amazing!  Even though it was only a couple of lines from the song, I think this was the first time its ever been played live!  PLUS he played "Rock Away Blind" at the second show.

Review: Lindsey Buckingham @ Chicago's City Winery
By Dan Snedigar
Gapers Block

The Chicago outpost of New York's City Winery has sort of been slowly rolling out the welcome mat over the past three weeks with a flurry of soft-opening and press events, a week's worth of Lewis Black shows, and a few musical acts to break in the venue. Last night, the second of two sold-out shows by legendary guitarist Lindsey Buckingham provided a great opportunity to really see how the new venue is settling into Chicago's musical landscape.

Buckingham, who will always be inextricably known for his contributions to Fleetwood Mac, opened his show talking about balance, and the contrast between what he called "the big machine" (Fleetwood Mac) and "the small machine", that being his solo efforts, and ultimately, this truly solo tour with just him and guitar in the stage lights. While it's easy to roll your eyes at a "small machine" that still apparently needs to employ no less than a dozen guitars, nine amps and cabinets and a dedicated guitar tech, ultimately, Buckingham has a point. Buckingham is responsible for many of Fleetwood Mac's biggest hits, and his solo performances offer a chance to see these songs, as well as those from other periods of his musical life, in an elemental state, absent most of Fleetwood Mac's accumulated baggage and any stadium bombast. Buckingham can rightfully claim to be one of rock's greatest guitarists, employing a truly singular finger-picking technique that gives him an extremely unique sound. On most of the night's songs, such as "Bleed to Love Her" and "Go Your Own Way," Buckingham's finger picking-style drove the songs, offering well-crafted, straightforward takes. Only occasionally did he seem the arena rock star, as on "Come" where he created an extended loop, then deftly segued into a solo over the playback, or on "I'm So Afraid" where he employed a backing track and launched into a lengthy jam. Clearly, there were some die-hard fans in attendance, and the hushed and reasonably sedate crowd proved the perfect audience, and Buckingham's solo show the perfect act, for City Winery's set up.

City Winery, Lindsey Buckingham highlight both sides
By Thomas Conner
Chicago Sun Times

There are two ways of looking at Chicago's new West Loop restaurant and music venue, City Winery, just as there are two ways of looking at the fact that Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham performed there this week.

Seeing Buckingham in this setting was similarly both worrying and revelatory.

At first, it screamed cautionary tale. As he himself admitted Monday, the second of a two-night stand at City Winery, his now-lengthy chain of solo tours have whittled down from a 10-piece band to just this current incarnation: Lindsey alone, with just a rack of guitars, a few occasional backing tracks and his many O-faces for company. Watching this mega-selling mega-talent take such an intimate stage -- surrounded by people eating paella balls and sipping cab franc -- was at first like discovering a great actor reduced to doing dinner theater in Florida.

But, as in our interview last year, Buckingham on Monday sermonized from the stage about the relative virtues of the "big machine" (Fleetwood Mac, which is making noise about another reunion next year) and the "small machine" (the eponymous albums and tours). He referred to the latter as a "strange little experiment," despite the fact he's managed to produce three solo albums (plus two live sets) in the last six years -- without the band's trademark hijacking of his material. He still worries about "feeling unseen" ("Not Too Late"), but he's determined to keep powering the little machine until it makes a noise that can at least be heard above the grinding gears of his bread-and-butter factory.

Lindsey Buckingham at City Winery Chicago | Review and photos

Time Out Chicago

With the massive success of Fleetwood Mac hovering over his head, it took a couple of decades for Lindsey Buckingham’s status as an honest to goodness grade-A auteur to sink in. Sure, he always earned and deserved credit for revitalizing the British blues band as a Cali rock force, but despite the considerable talents of his cohorts, somewhere along the line Buckingham became the least expendable member of the bunch, his vision vital to keeping the group focused even when it sometimes seemed to be sending it off track. That’s one reason why the wayward but wondrous Tusk (with its curious “special thanks from the band to Lindsey Buckingham” credit) has become many fans’ dark horse favorite: What was once misread as indulgence turned out to be innovation, and Buckingham hasn’t really taken the safe route since.

Admittedly, Buckingham’s perfectionist tendencies do a great job disguising, if not suppressing, the strange, which is why catching him live is a unique opportunity to see his numerous hits, misses and never-had-a-shots stripped down to their essence, often remodulated by the master outside of their more familiar studio contexts. Indeed, watching Lindsey Buckingham—tan, fit and in strong voice at 62—perform a solo set at the City Winery Sunday night, the first of two shows, it was remarkable how much he was able to bring across with just his voice and guitar, minus most of the fussy (albeit cool) Baroque ornamentation that has marked Buckingham’s work both within and without Fleetwood Mac.

Concert and Venue Review: Lindsey Buckingham Live at City Winery (Sunday, 8/26/12 in Chicago)
By JimRyan
Chicago Now

Starting out the show, Buckingham took a moment to offer a few words on why this show would be different from what he dubbed "The Big Machine" (AKA Fleetwood Mac).  On Sunday, "The Small Machine" consisted of Buckingham, a bevy of guitars, the occasional drum machine loop and a tech that earned his keep tuning guitars at a frantic pace at the foot of the stage, trading them off to Buckingham following literally every song of the seventy-five minute set.  I lost track of whether Lindsey actually played a different guitar on every song...  But he definitely switched guitars following every song.  Solid body acoustics, electric acoustics... you name it and it was probably played by Lindsey Buckingham Sunday night.

As what I've always considered to be the true creative force behind Fleetwood Mac's finest moments, Buckingham somehow remains an extremely underrated guitarist.  He's one of my all-time favorite players and his finger-picking skills were on full display at City Winery.

There are times during a solo Lindsey Buckingham set where you could close your eyes and envision about three guitarists performing in front of you.  And yet, you open them to find only one man responsible for the rhythm, melody and notes enveloping your senses.

Reviews x 3 Lindsey Buckingham Live in McKinney

Lindsey Buckingham unleashes a torrent of potent solo and Fleetwood Mac songs during one-man show
By Mario Tarradell
Dallas Morning News

McKINNEY – It only took Lindsey Buckingham two songs to unleash a torrent of potency that would immediately color his one-man concert performance in dramatic shades of red and black.

He was singing “Bleed to Love Her,” a track from Fleetwood Mac’s 2003 album Say You Will, and his voice was an intense series of whispers and screams. His guitar work was at once menacing and delicate, an intricate pastiche that amazed at every turn.

Buckingham delivered 13 numbers during 75 minutes Thursday night at the McKinney Performing Arts Center, a courthouse converted into a venue with impressive acoustics. His intimate turn onstage touched on some of his Mac contributions as well as material from four of his solo albums.

"Buckingham turned just about every song he played inside out"

McKINNEY -- All too often, when an artist familiar from a band context puts on a one-man (or -woman) show, it's a pleasant but ordinary experience: The songs done more quietly, probably acoustically, but not changed all that much from their original incarnation.

Lindsey Buckingham is too much of a risk-taker for that, and in a relatively brief but exhilarating concert Thursday at the McKinney Performing Arts Center, Buckingham -- accompanied solely by his raft of guitars and a few effects -- turned the whole idea of "quiet one-man show" on its head.

"The closing guitar solo on the latter-day Fleetwood Mac song
Come was brain-frying in the best way"

Review: Lindsey Buckingham proves his worth as one of world’s greatest guitarists
by Angie Bado

MCKINNEY — "Awesome, amazing, and fantastic" were some of the adjectives that I heard from fans as they left the McKinney Performing Arts Center following Lindsey Buckingham's performance there Thursday night.

Buckingham, who graced the stage before a packed house, has still got it. The critically acclaimed singer-songwriter has won numerous accolades and awards over the course of his lengthy career. He's best known as guitarist and male lead singer for Fleetwood Mac and as a solo performer. And on Thursday, he held the audience captive from the first note, as he opened with "Cast Away Dreams."

"Yes, Buckingham is still all that and a bag of chips"

Lindsey Buckingham Brings 'Small Machine' to Austin
Fleetwood Mac guitarist thrills Antone's crowd in solo show
By CHAD SWIATECKI

Roughly 40 minutes into a revealing, intimate show at Austin blues club Antone's on Wednesday, Lindsey Buckingham essentially dared his audience not to sing with him. Teasing the opening of the undeniable Fleetwood Mac hit "Never Going Back Again" on his eighth different guitar of the night, Buckingham sang the song's opening line in a voice so faint atop finger picking so precise that any crowd accompaniment would've crushed the moment.

The fans recognized this, and they stayed hushed as the song built to a winding, Graham Nash-ian guitar solo, reaching its high point with Buckingham belting out reworked lines – "been down three times!" – before settling into the familiar sing-along chorus.

"Buckingham showed that his "small machine" moments can be some of the most thrilling and satisfying of his career."

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM "rarely misses the opportunity to leave your jaw dangling"

This concert with Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham has been sold out for weeks. Selected by the Dallas Morning News as the concert of the month in the metroplex, Lindsey will be rocking the Courtroom Theater stage to a packed house at the McKinney Performing Arts Center on Thursday night.  Lindsey, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (with Fleetwood Mac), has won countless awards, selling out venues around the world and helping define the sound of rock for the last three decades. We're excited to have him performing in McKinney. Rock On!

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM at Cendera Center, Fort Worth, TX (Aug 24)
DFW.com

These days, Lindsey Buckingham seems to prefer the quiet storms. His solo output, including last year's effort, Seeds We Sow, leans heavily on finger-picked acoustic guitar and hushed, intimate vocals, which can build to a low boil. Not that his days in Fleetwood Mac were legendary for their bombast (well, perhaps his contributions to Tusk), but the legendarily intense Buckingham has mellowed into an introspective singer-songwriter with an affinity for left-field sonics. He'll be served well by the cozy Cendera Center and its terrific acoustics. This current solo jaunt helps Buckingham pass the time before a reported Fleetwood Mac reunion, set for next year. Buckingham doesn't get enough credit for how his mid-'70s addition transformed Fleetwood Mac, with too much of it flowing to his one-time paramour Stevie Nicks. The band hit their apogee on the new lineup's first three albums together — Fleetwood Mac, Rumours and Tusk — before speeding downhill during the '80s. A tremendous producer who loves to ladle on the layers, Buckingham is an equally gifted pop craftsman and guitarist with an adventurous streak. This latter characteristic is particularly applicable to his latest album, Seeds We Sow. Its raw, largely acoustic home-studio vibe is surprisingly understated, allowing the complexity of his playing and lyrical poignancy to possess the whole stage.  GET TICKETS

Fleetwood Mac is making noise about another reunion next year, and another new indie-rock tribute album to the '70s supergroup is out now. Meanwhile, the band's creative center and superfluously talented guitarist keeps making the rounds, playing some of the Mac hits in among his own intricate, edgy solo material. He rarely misses the opportunity to leave your jaw dangling. Bonus: It's one of the first shows at this swank, new West Loop venue.   At 8 p.m. Aug. 26-27 at City Winery, 1200 W. Randolph. The talented performer, listed as the 100th best guitarist in the world by Rolling Stone magazine, dazzled fans in attendance with his powerful, and still impressive, vocals and his even more impressive fingerpicking guitar skills. The large crowd featured fans from as far away as San Antonio, Texas, and Lafayette, La., as well as many local and area patrons, such as Mark and Caroline Crawford of Lake Charles, La., who made their first-ever trip to the Lutcher Theater.

HOT OFF THE HOUSTON PRESS:
Lindsey Buckingham at Fitzgerald's - August 20, 2012
By Christina Lynn
Houston Press

It was a packed house Monday night at Fitzgerald's when Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham took the stage, albeit this time with a very "small machine:" Himself. No bells or whistles, just him and mostly his guitar.

Buckingham began the evening with the beautiful "Cast Away Dreams" before launching into the newer Fleetwood Mac classic "Bleed To Love Her." Though the song was rather harmonious as is, I couldn't help but hum along in my head Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie's parts as heard on the original recording.

2 More Sell-Outs for Lindsey Buckingham - Stevie Nicks Toein the Line

Lindsey's 2 shows at City Winery Chicago August 26th and 27th including Meet and Greets are now completely sold out!

These two new sell outs gives Lindsey a total of 7 shows since July 26th that have sold out well in advance of showtime, where if you went to the website selling the tickets, it either indicated sold out, or there were no seats left to choose from.  It's also entirely possible that other venues have sold out right at the last minute.  Not sure what this is attributed to, whether hitting these towns during the summer makes all the difference, or if it's because he's hitting markets he's largely never been to lately, the size of the venue or if it's just straight up good promotion on the part of the venue and his team - or all of the above.  Certainly the great ticket prices help!  In any case... GOOD FOR HIM! His tour runs through September 8th in Rama, Ontario Canada, which should end up being the largest audience yet on this tour... Nice send off!

There are still Tickets available for multiple Lindsey shows HERE!  Don't miss him and his stable of guitars... He's reportedly back with Fleetwood Mac next year and it could be awhile before he's back out on his own again.

Stevie's not doing so bad herself, aside from the big shows with Rod Stewart this summer where big crowds were guaranteed she's managed a couple of solo sell outs herself in advance. The smaller more intimate venues are a no brainer to see her show and tickets move quickly it seems. The Beacon in NYC and The Niagra Falls show were two examples of shows that sold out well in advance of their date. Most of the venues she's used to playing in have been considerably larger then what Lindsey's been playing with the ticket price to match.  Its cool that she's adjusting down a bit to a smaller venue in some cities.  Even though some of her top ticket prices are a real commitment from fans she still manages to move a ton of tickets in a short amount of time where other artists of her caliber would have to put the show on sale months in advance.  That's how you know you have confidence in your audience when you can announce a show a month and a half ahead of time with top ticket prices and still manage a sizable crowd.

Stevie has 5 shows coming up, next month, two of which were just announced within the last couple of weeks.  Her show in Thackerville, OK on September 21st at WinStar World Resorts was announced quite some time ago and there are literally only 9 tickets left!  Most of which are single seats!!  So grab those if you can!  Ticketmaster

The show in St. Augustine, Florida on September 25th which was just announced a couple of weeks ago and went on sale August 17th is well on it's way to selling out. Seats still available at the back of the theatre on both levels.  These are perfect venues to see live acts in, there really isn't a bad seat in the house even if you are near the back.  And the sound is incredible compared to the big arena shows... St. Augustine Tickets are here at Ticketmaster.

Estero, Florida on September 27th goes on sale this Friday August 24th 10am at Ticketmaster.  So far no pre-sale has been announced for this show that I know of so the bulk of tickets should be available come 10am Friday AM.  Get Ready!  Ticketmaster

Two other shows where Stevie will be performing with other performers include Voices in The Park in Stanley Park in Vancouver Canada September 15th.  She's there along with Sarah McLachlan Bryan Adams, Jann Arden and others (and singing with Don Henley the night prior at a private function).  Hope it doesn't rain.  Still a few seated area seats left. Not sure what the limit is on the general admission area behind the seats, but it should be an entertaining evening if you are in Vancouver, plus it's for a really good cause.  Get tickets at Ticketmaster

The New Orleans show on September 22nd is presented by AARP and performers include Stevie Nicks, Gladys Knight and Melissa Etheridge.  There appears to be plenty of seats left for this show, but I believe it's at the tail end of a AARP convention being held in New Orleans and there will likely be a lot of last minute ticket buying.  Secure your seats today on Ticketmaster.

It Happened: 15 Years Ago Today Fleetwood Mac released "The Dance"

Fleetwood Mac "The Dance" Released 15 Years Ago Today

August 19, 1997 - Fleetwood Mac released The Dance on the 20th Anniversary of Rumours, and the 30th Anniversary of Fleetwood Mac. The ablum went on to become the fifth best selling live album of all time in the US. To date US sales alone total over 5 million copies. The Dance marks the first album to feature the most successful line-up of Fleetwood Mac since the release of Tango in The Night in 1987 and the first album by the band to top the US albums charts since 1982's Mirage.  The album debuted on Billboard's Top 200 Albums Chart September 6, 1997 with sales of 199,000.  It would spend the next 12 weeks inside the top 10 and would sell its first million copies in the US within 8 weeks.

The album contained three new tracks - Temporary One from Christine McVie, Bleed To Love Her from Lindsey Buckingham and Sweet Girl from Stevie Nicks.

It all began May 22, 1997 when the band reconvened in a Warner Bros. Studio soundstage in Burbank, California where over the course of two evenings (May 22nd and 23rd), The Dance was filmed before a live audience.  MTV began airing the special August 12th and one week later Reprise released the album on August 19th.  Warner Reprise released the VHS video version first on August 26th following the album release, then on DVD September 23, 1997.  To date The Dance video has been certified platinum.

The DVD version contained five exclusive tracks not found on the CD: Songbird, Gold Dust Woman, Gypsy, Over My Head and Go Insane.

With the release of The Dance, it not only delighting exsisting fans world wide, but we fell in love with them all over again.  Fans had all but given up on the classic line-up ever getting back together again.  The Dance also introduced the band, and was the entry point for many new fans of Fleetwood Mac - thanks in large part to the MTV and vh1 airings of The Dance and also in large part to the singles releases from the album including "Silver Springs" which was a Rumours cut originally slated for the album, but was cut at the last minute because of vinyl limitations only making it to the B-side of the Go Your Own Way single back in the 70's and later in 1992 on Fleetwood Mac's box set "25 Years - The Chain".  The tune was issued to pop, AC and Mainstream rock radio July 22, 1997 with "The Chain" following as a promotional only CD issued to radio August 4, 1997.  "Landslide" was released, remixed and reached as high as #51 on Billboards Top 100 Singles chart.

THE CHAIN
BLEED TO LOVE HER

Following the release, Fleetwood Mac mounted A huge 45 date US fall tour playing to sold out venues everywhere making this the first tour all 5 Rumours era members would be on stage together since 1982. It also marked the last tour with all five members as Christine McVie retired from the band in 1998.

Small club, 'small machine,' big sound: Lindsey Buckingham rocked solo at One Eyed Jacks
By Alison Fensterstock, The Times-Picayune

The stage at One Eyed Jacks Saturday night, in anticipation of Lindsey Buckingham, looked surprisingly bare. There was no forbidding security team, no extra sound personnel, no barriers at the stage’s edge, not even a chair by the microphone – just a spotlight and a couple of bottles of water. A rack of half a dozen very nice guitars in the wings stage right was the only hint that the night’s featured entertainment was a bona fide rock legend, veteran of inaugural balls, multi-platinum albums and one of the most complicated and dramatic band soap operas in musical history.

Steven Tyler and Friends to rock Fleetwood's Grand Opening

Steven Tyler and friends to rock Lahaina Aug. 23
Special big bash at Fleetwood’s a benefit for Childhelp on Maui
By JON WOODHOUSE
Maui News

After a soft opening on Aug. 2, Fleetwood's on Front St. is gearing up for a big bash. The restaurant owned by Fleetwood Mac's legendary drummer will host a series of grand opening benefit parties Wednesday through Aug. 25 featuring the Mick Fleetwood's Island Rumours Band, with some celebrity guests jetting in for the occasion.

Probably the most eagerly anticipated event will see Aerosmith's charismatic lead vocalist, Steven Tyler joining his Fleetwood Mac mate, along with blues great Johnny Lang for some major rocking with the Island Rumours Band on Aug. 23.

The special concert on the 23rd will benefit Childhelp on Maui. This non-profit organization seeks to meet the physical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs of abused, neglected and at-risk children.

The next night is all for Lahainaluna High School. There will be our regular menu with a $50 cover and Mick will play with Willie K and Island Rumours. All entry proceeds go to Lahainaluna."

The final opening event, on the 25th, will include entertainment with King Paris (aka Rick Vito) and The Hypnotics, featuring the Gentle Genie Giant on percussion. "There's no cover, it's open to the world, for people who love rock n' roll and want to be there," says Todd.

* Tickets for the Aug. 23rd benefit are $500 and $350, and include food and drink. There is a $50 cover charge for entertainment on the evening of the 24th, and a $25 donation for lunch on the same day. No cover on the 25th. There is also a private party on the 22nd with the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band. Call 669-Mick for more info. and reservations.

No mention of Stevie or John being there... Might Stevie fly over for the opening? She's got a bit of time before her road trippin' begins again mid-September??  John McVie's only one island over from Maui... Nonetheless, it's a big week ahead for Mick and his new restaurant.
