PHOTOS + REVIEW: Stevie Nicks "her voice is still strong, confident, and amazingly rich in the deeper tones"

STEVIE NICKS
LIVE IN ORLANDO
August 3, 2012

The sultry Stevie Nicks and randy Rod Stewart seem like an odd pairing for a concert event, but last night’s Orlando stop on their Heart & Soul tour provided an entertaining evening of musical nostalgia by two pros who still have it.

Opening the show with a 75-minute set featuring solo tunes old and new, as well as those songs made famous through her days with Fleetwood Mac, Nicks has never sounded better. Sure, she’s lost some of the upper register (which she graciously concedes to her back-up duo) but her voice is still strong, confident, and amazingly rich in the deeper tones.

Unlike Stewart, whose most recent output has been a recurring trip to the  Great American Songbook, Nicks had her 2011 critically acclaimed release In Your Dreams to draw from. And surprisingly, those songs (of which three were performed) blended perfectly with her classic hits. Most notable was “Soldier’s Angel,” a mournful ballad inspired by her own interactions with wounded American soldiers.

But it was the classics that most of the audience was there to hear, and she didn’t disappoint. An Irish-tinged and string laden intro to Fleetwood Mac’s “Gold Dust Woman” gave that song new life, and the ghostly “Rhiannon” was presented in two different versions garnering the ultimate theatricality.

The solo years of the 80s kicked into gear with a fun arrangement of “Stand Back” while she announced that she was wearing the original “Stand Back” cape from the 1983 video. It was her first chance to treat the audience to her signature “Stevie spin” as well.

Seemingly providing the “heart” of the Heart & Soul tour, Nicks closed her set with the luscious “Landslide,” accompanied by a slide show of her life for a song she equated with family and loving those close to you.

Review: Stevie Nicks Orlando 8/3 Nicks offered a dramatic assortment of mystical gestures

STEVIE NICKS | ROD STEWART - LIVE IN ORLANDO
Review by: Jim Abbott

“Two legends, one stage,” proclaimed ads for the “Heart & Soul” tour of Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks.

Part of that might be a stretch, but there was one stage on Friday at a nearly packed Amway Center.

In terms of musical chemistry, these two veteran rock stars seem like an odd couple. Not exactly leather and lace, you know?

Still, Stewart and Nicks (who didn’t sing together on this night) have enough classic favorites for an appealing nostalgia trip. That’s especially true for Stewart, who also possesses a knack for channeling material of heavyweight songwriters from Bob Dylan to Van Morrison.

Nicks, on the other hand, hasn’t been as busy, releasing only two studio projects since 2001. In a well-constructed 75-minute opening set, songs from her 2011 “In Your Dreams” album were strong enough to hope that she doesn’t wait so long for the next release. Even without the rest of her old band, the classics “Dreams,” “Gold Dust Woman” and “Landslide” remain powerful.

Dressed in flowing black, with matching fingerless gloves, Nicks offered a dramatic assortment of mystical gestures and the occasional spinning dance move, especially in a theatrical “Rhiannon.” Between songs, she was chatty enough to qualify as the heart of the “Heart & Soul” tour.

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM LIVE IN WILMINGTON, NC

Interesting looking venue! Small... Intimate for sure... and in what appears to be the woods!
The sound must have been awesome!

STEVIE NICKS | ROD STEWART - LIVE IN PITTSBURGH
My most anticipated internship assignment of the summer happened on Saturday night when I went to CONSOL Energy Center to photograph Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks in concert.  I was especially excited to see Stevie because I consider her one of my musical heroes, and I had always wanted to watch her perform live.  Yet, I was also curious to see what Rod Stewart’s set was like, since I like a good number of his songs and had heard he was really funny and entertaining onstage.

Update: Tour Stats... Stevie Nicks Solo + 3 Heart & Soul Dates

Solo and Heart and Soul Tour
Below are the shows reported on so far.

Regarding the Uncasville show... It is odd that the attendance figure at 3,384 is being reported with a capacity of 3,786.  The venue IS far larger then that... As an example, in April, 2008 when Stevie played the same venue, these were the numbers that were reported:  Attendance: 7,466  |  Capacity: 7,681

So I think this number this year that was reported can't be correct.  And like someone said below, good seats and tickets were hard to come by for this show.
