Liz Rosenberg, says Stevie Nicks hopes to release newly recorded songs from the vault in October

It's proving to be a very busy year for the legendary Stevie Nicks. Not only is she about to head out on tour with a reunited Fleetwood Mac, but she's also in the midst of finishing up her own new solo album.

Tentatively titled "24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault," Nicks' forthcoming collection includes lost and stray tracks that she's written and recorded through the years, but never made it onto an album. The selections for "24 Karat Gold" were all newly recorded, and co-produced by Nicks, Dave Stewart and Waddy Wachtel.

Nicks' publicist, Liz Rosenberg, says that Nicks hopes to release the album in October on Reprise/Warner Bros. Records. She recently recorded the "24 Karat" tunes in Nashville, and will continue working on the album in Los Angeles.

(The album title presumably refers to Nicks’ song “24 Karat Gold,” which is widely available on YouTube as a bootleg.)

Nicks says that she just recorded “18 tracks in three weeks” for the album — saying that it’s the “fastest I have ever recorded.”

She made those comments last night during her acceptance speech at the BMI Pop Awards in Los Angeles, where she was honored with the BMI Icon award for her songwriting achievements. Nicks has written or co-written many of her solo hit singles, including “Edge of Seventeen (Just Like the White Winged Dove)” and “Stand Back.” As part of the band Fleetwood Mac, Nicks wrote or co-wrote such favorites as “Landslide,” “Rhiannon” and the No. 1 the Billboard Hot 100 hit “Dreams.”

“We went onto YouTube and we found all the songs that, somehow, were taken from my house or picked up or loaned out or whatever … and we went to Nashville (and recorded them),” Nicks told the Associated Press. “So they’re like all starting from like 1969 maybe? I call them my 24 karat gold songs.”

There’s no word on if “24 Karat Gold” will feature any special guests, however, with Nicks having been in a collaborative mood lately, one never knows who might turn up on the set. Recently, Nicks performed with Lady Antebellum on the Academy of Country Music Awards (April 6) and on “CMT Crossroads” (Sept. 13, 2013), as well as with Dave Grohl on the “Sound City” soundtrack (2013).

“24 Karat Gold” follows Nicks’ last studio effort, 2011’s “In Your Dreams,” which was also co-produced by Stewart. It debuted and peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart and has sold 199,000 in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. 

Fleetwood Mac, meanwhile, is also working on new music and will kick off a concert tour starting Sept. 30 in Minneapolis. It will be the band’s first trek with singer/songwriter Christine McVie since The Dance Tour in 1997.

This is crazy exciting!!... She's got so many great songs that have never been officially released... I'm really interested to see which ones were chosen.  Obviously, 24 Karat Gold is one of them. She apparently recorded 17-18 tracks in Nashville. We have a lot to look forward too... and a lot of great stories I'm sure will be revealed as to what inspired the song.

Fitting title too... Stevie's been wearing a lot of 24 Karat Gold the last couple of years!

Legendary singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks received the BMI Icon Award in recognition of her unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers. As the 2014 BMI Icon Award recipient, Nicks joins an elite list of past honorees that includes Paul Simon, Carole King, David Foster, John Fogerty, Kris Kristofferson, the Jacksons, Carlos Santana, Dolly Parton and others.

"This is one of the best nights of my life," Nicks said upon accepting her award, going on to poignantly capture the craft for which she was honored, "We are reporters – we songwriters write songs about life, not just love." Nicks added, "I want to thank Del. This is so important to me. To all of you here, all of you songwriters and artists, I wrote my first song when I was 15 1/2 and this is what you have to look forward to if you really want to do this. Go for it, be determined, don't let anyone get in your way … Bring the fun back!"

The night included a special star-studded musical tribute to Nicks, featuring Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, the incomparable Sheryl Crow, country music trio Lady Antebellum, piano-playing chanteuse Vanessa Carlton and the multi-talented Shakira. Levine and Crow combined their breathtaking talent to deliver a mesmerizing rendition of Nicks’ “Leather & Lace,” Lady Antebellum commandeered “Rhiannon,” Carlton wowed the audience with “Dreams” and Shakira serenaded with “Landslide.”

And I said, 'Well, Chris, have you seen us in concert lately? Because you should see us, because it's very physical. It's almost three hours, and you have to kind of be an athlete. So, get a trainer.' And she did! She did, totally! So she's, like, rockin.' So she's very excited, and we are very excited for her. "

NICKS GETS ICONIC, TALKS FLEETWOOD MAC REUNION, NEW SOLO ALBUM AND 'AMERICAN HORROR STORY'

Stevie Nicks thought former Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie was pulling her leg.

"She called when we were in Europe at the end of last year," explained Nicks. "And (she) said, 'What would you think if I decided to come back to the band?' And I'm like, 'Well, you've convinced us over 16 years that you were never coming back. You finally, actually convinced us. So, are you kidding?'"

She wasn't.

McVie had conquered a longtime fear of flying -- a fear so crippling that, in 1998, it forced her to retire from one of the world's busiest touring bands.

McVie spent most of the time between then and now at her mansion in rural northern England.

With McVie's return, Fleetwood Mac is finally back to its most successful configuration, also including Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood and Christin's ex-husband John McVie.

Out of the gate, they produced the multi-million selling albums "Fleetwood Mac" (1975) and "Rumours" (1977) and such pop classics as "Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win)" "Say You Love Me," "Go Your Own Way" and "Dreams."

Many of Fleetwood Mac's hits were written by Nicks, who, Tuesday night, was honored with the Icon award from music-rights management group Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) for her body of work both with the band and solo, also including the songs "Landslide," "Gypsy," "Edge of Seventeen" and "Stand Back."

To prep for her acceptance speech, Nicks, 66, reviewed her own songbook.

"There's no fluff," she noted. "There's no just-playful, no-big-deal songs."

"It's a very, very heavy thing to look back on what you've done," Nicks continued. "And, then, tomorrow, it all starts again."

There's a solo album on the way, with 17 so-called "trunk" songs -- things Nicks had written and, in some cases, performed over the years that fans requested be properly recorded and put into an album. A new Fleetwood Mac album is coming, too, as well as a big Mac tour, beginning 30 September in Minneapolis.

Nicks said she warned McVie to expect a very different experience on stage, "'It's very physical. It's almost three hours. You have to kind of be an athlete, so get a trainer.' And she did! She did, totally! And she's like rockin.'"

Stevie Nicks remains the key inspiration of her largest fan event, but the diversity of its talent and turnout proves you can be her disciple and still go your own way.

Tambourines were tossed from the stage into a decadent crowd of hundreds, and ample black shawls were available for sale, but Stevie Nicks’s trademark accessories were hardly a requirement at last Friday’s Night of 1,000 Stevies, the 24th incarnation of the largest Nicks fan event in the world. Held at New York’s Irving Plaza, its sixth—and grandest—venue, the mystical affair attracted fans and performers who each found a way to uniquely channel Fleetwood Mac’s witchy woman.

Peter Mayes is an Australian musician and producer widely known for being a leading member of dance act Pnau. He is longtime collaborator with Nick Littlemore and has produced and mixed many of his projects, most notably the platinum selling album Walking on a Dream, for Empire of the Sun, and the art-rock act Teenager. He has also done work with Elton John, Mika, Karen O, The Killers, Ellie Goulding, Sia, ESG, Lover Lover and Van She.

AUDIO: Christine McVie describes the NEW Fleetwood Mac Sound

While fans have been buzzing about the return of Christine McVie for a tour this fall, most of Fleetwood Mac has quietly been in a Los Angeles studio working on new material.

Here's a short clip of Christine describing the sounds Fleetwood Mac are producing:
 

"There's a whole variety of songs, starting from sort of blues-based songs to very commercial songs, really. It's very, very exciting and very, very...I don't know. We get chills when we hear them."

Buckingham says the group worked on about eight songs -- whose titles include "Carnival Begin," "Red Sun" and "Too Far Gone" -- and also has material he, bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood worked on prior to last year's Fleetwood Mac tours of North America and Europe. Stevie Nicks will also be making contributions, he says, but there are no firm release plans yet:



"There was never really any intention to try and finish this album and put it out to promote on this particular tour that we're about to embark upon because we all felt that maybe the smart call was to go out and have the novelty of Christine being back in the band be the cleaner and more to-the-point place to start, and so to go out and just re-include her songs in the body of work and have that be pretty much the presentation of that set seemed to be the right thing to do, and then to come back and when we're done with that (tour) and finish this up with Stevie, who has...assured us she will be ready to do that then. And then we'll have something to gout and promote with some new music. So it becomes sort of a long-term plan, so we're all very excited about that."

Fleetwood Mac Revives Chemistry In Studio: 'We Get Chills,' Says Christine McVie

Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie talk about collaborating ahead of the band's upcoming tour. "We've been working very closely together, so there is a freshness"

It appears that Christine McVie will be returning to Fleetwood Mac to do more than play some old songs in concert. The group -- sans Stevie Nicks, who was busy with "some other commitments," according to Lindsey Buckingham -- has just finished a nearly two-month run in Studio D at the Village Recorder in Los Angeles, where Fleetwood Mac made 1979's "Tusk" album, working on a batch of new songs by McVie and Buckingham.

"This has kind of been a project in slow motion, that's the only way I can put it," Buckingham tells Billboard. "We got in the studio not knowing what to expect, and the chemistry was just unbelievable... We got eight tracks very far along, like, 75 percent done. It just played out really organically in a way that seemed appropriate." Buckingham says the new songs came from ideas McVie brought into the band, and coupled with material he worked on previously with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, the group has "about 14 or 15 things, and some other things we want to get to down the line" even before Nicks begins making contributions. 

"We're all very excited about it. Knowing me, I'm going to be pushing for a double album," Buckingham says with a laugh.

Describing the new songs -- which include "Carnival Begin," "Red Sun" and "Too Far Gone" -- McVie says, "There's a wide variety, starting from sort of blues-based songs to very commercial songs. It's very, very exciting. We get chills when we hear them. They sound really fresh. There's an element, I guess, that hasn't really existed so much in the past although it has been there in the fact Lindsey and I have been collaborating more. We've been working very closely together, so there is a freshness and obviously there are parts for Stevie to sing on all of these songs, which she will do eventually."

When the rest of the world hears them remains up in the air, however. Fleetwood Mac released a four-song digital EP in April of 2013, and Buckingham and McVie say they don't expect to have a new album ready before the group's upcoming tour starts September 30 in Minneapolis.

"We haven't finished what we've done here," McVie explains. "these are just tracks with some overdubs, and they're certainly not finished. I go back to England now until the beginning of rehearsals, which is the end of July, and then we're rehearsing and then we're touring, so we won't really have time to (finish the songs). There's some talk about some time next year. Fleetwood Mac always take a long time to make a record -- you know what."

Buckingham concurs, though he acknowledges that there may be a bit of clamor for the new music once word of the sessions leaks out, which may effect the timetable for the material's release. "We want to plant some seeds of awareness about what we're doing," he says. "We won't want to pretend it doesn't exist. We're very proud of it, and we do want to get the word out. But we'll have to see how much clamor there is by the time we get into rehearsal and we have some time to let these seeds grow and see what kind of interest there is. That may inform our decisions one way or the other."

Buckingham, meanwhile, says he's particularly stoked that making new music is part of McVie's return after a 16-year absence. "It just took on a life of its own for sure," he says. "For years I was telling everybody, 'Y'know, she'll never be in the band again. She's gone.' I really believed that. But right now the whole thing has really got such a circular feel to it. And if you're talking about one more act for this play or whatever you want to call it, I can't think of a better way to do it." 

Fleetwood Mac formally announced McVie's return in January after she joined the group on stage in London last September. McVie -- who released one solo album, 2004's "In the Meantime," during the interim but mostly spent her time as "a retired lady of leisure with the Range Rover and the Dogs" in rural England -- has gone through therapy to overcome a fear of flying that was one of the reasons he left the group. And she promises that she's back in Fleetwood Mac "for perpetuity, yeah. For as long as I'm around. I'm here. I'm committed." And she adds that returning to the studio with the group was like getting back on the proverbial bike.  

"I thought I was going to get nervous coming in the studio, but it's felt very easy and natural," she says. "Before I got to L.A. Lindsey and I had been ping-ponging ideas on computers and that; I'd send him my very, very rough, funky demos and he made some kind of sense out of them and sent them back to me with him playing guitar and they started to turn into really lovely ideas. I really missed playing with them and the chemistry of it all and started to really, really desire to start doing something again, and the only people I could think of that I would have any desire to do anything with would be them, Fleetwood Mac."

FLEETWOOD MAC RECORDING FIRST NEW STUDIO ALBUM IN OVER A DECADE

Lindsey Buckingham revealed that Fleetwood Mac is currently in the studio recording its first studio album in over a decade -- with the full classic lineup teaming up for the first time since 1987. Buckingham explained that a substantial amount of the material came from the group's 2012 sessions for their Extended Play EP, released last year: 

"There was a bunch of material that I cut with John (McVie) and Mick (Fleetwood), about a year-and-a-half ago, before we hit the road last time. And a couple of those made it into the show and we put out this little EP from that -- but there were quite a few other things. So, y’know, we had that as a starting point for an album."

"We were here at the Village for I think 4 weeks, then we took a week off, and then we were here for another 4 weeks. And this is our last few days.  And we got 8 tracks, very far along... You know like 75% done in that amount of time. And all of those except for 1 are Christine, or co-writes between Christine and myself. Because it seemed like the priority was to work on her stuff then to get her feeling comfortable and feeling far along with this process and we managed that very well".

Neil Young , Stevie Nicks and Lionel Richie are among several artists from outside the world of country music who scored nominations for the 2014 CMT Music Awards .  The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will compete against each other for the CMT Performance of the Year prize at the ceremony, which will air live from Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, June 4, at 8 p.m. ET on CMT.

Young received a nod for a duet rendition of his song "Long May You Run" with his old buddy Willie Nelson , which was featured on an episode of CMT Crossroads titled Willie Nelson & Friends from Third Man Records .  Nicks, meanwhile, was nominated for a performance from her own CMT Crossroads appearance, which featured her performing with Lady Antebellum .  They're nominated for their collaborative version of her Fleetwood Mac classic "Rhiannon."  As for pop/R&B legend Richie, who had a surprise hit with his 2012 country duets collection, Tuskegee , he garnered a nod for his medley performance of "Oh No"/"All Night Long" with Luke Bryan from the 2013 CMT Artists of the Year special.

Other nominees for CMT Performance of the Year include modern-rock band Fall Out Boy   and pop group OneRepublic , who are being recognized for their respective CMT Crossroads duets with Dierks Bentley and The Band Perry .

Miranda Lambert is the leading nominee for the 2014 CMT Music Awards with a total of six.  Voting for the CMT Music Awards is now open at CMT.com and will run through June 1 at midnight.  Tickets for the show go on sale this Saturday May 10 at 11 a.m. ET via Ticketmaster.
