Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' Among Best Selling UK Vinyl Albums of 2020

Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' expected to be announced as one of the year’s best selling vinyl albums in the UK.

Nearly 5 million (4.8m) LPs were purchased in the UK over the past 12 months – a leap of nearly a tenth on sales in 2019 and a 13th consecutive year of growth since 2007.  Vinyl LPs now account for nearly 1 in 5 of all albums purchased (18%) and are at their highest level since the early nineties. Vinyl generates almost twice as much in industry revenues as music video streaming platforms, such as YouTube, despite the tens of billions of videos watched every year.

The BPI will report its final music consumption figures on January 4th 2021.

Predicted best-selling vinyl albums for 2020 (Based on YTD Official Charts data)

1. Fleetwood Mac – Rumours
2. Oasis – (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?
3. Amy Winehouse – Back To Black
4. Nirvana – Nevermind
5. Harry Styles – Fine Line
6. Kylie Minogue – Disco
7. AC/DC – Power Up
8. Queen – Greatest Hits
9. IDLES – Ultra Mono
10. Arctic Monkeys – Live At The Royal Albert Hall

Fleetwood Mac's Rumours Is Once Again a Top 10 Album in the US

Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' Returns to Billboard 200 Top 10 -- 42 Years Later

by Keith Caulfield
Billboard

After a 42-year wait, Fleetwood Mac’s former Billboard 200 No. 1 album Rumours returns to the top 10 this week, as the set jumps 13-7. The album, released in 1977, is basking in the glow of sales and streaming increases spurred on by publicity generated from a viral TikTok video set to the album’s song “Dreams.”

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Oct. 24-dated chart (where Rumours returns to the top 10) will be posted in full on Billboard's website on Oct. 20. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

Rumours earned 33,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Oct. 15 – up 15%, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. Of that sum, 23,000 comprise SEA units (up 15%, equating to 30.6 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs, including "Dreams"), a little under 7,000 are in album sales (up 15%) and 4,000 are in TEA units (up 13%).

The TikTok video in question has “Dreams” soundtracking a man in a hoodie (Nathan Apodaca) seemingly being pulled on a skateboard, as he drinks from a bottle of Ocean Spray Cran-Raspberry juice and sings along with Stevie Nicks’ lead vocal. The video became so popular, it moved the band’s own Mick Fleetwood and Nicks to create their own tribute clips.

Rumours spent 31 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 1977-78 – a record number of weeks atop the list for an album by a duo or group. Rumours was last in the top 10 on the Feb. 18, 1978-dated chart (at No. 10), and last ranked at No. 7 or higher on the Feb. 11, 1978 chart (where it placed at No. 7).

“Dreams” is Fleetwood Mac’s only No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart – out of 25 chart hits. “Dreams” spent one week at No. 1 on June 18, 1977. The cut is one of four top 10 hits from the Rumours album. The effort also launched the singles “Go Your Own Way” (No. 10), “Don’t Stop” (No. 3) and “You Make Loving Fun” (No. 9).

Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' and 'Dreams' explode on the Billboard Charts!

Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' is the "greatest gainer" this week on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart as it explodes in sales and jumps up the Top 200 albums chart to #13 from #27 last week as a result of Nathan Apodaca’s viral TikTok video featuring 'Dreams'.  I believe the last time the album was this high on the charts was back in May, 2011 when the entire 'Rumours' album was featured in the Glee episode and it reached #11.

The 1988 Greatest Hits release also sees a major boost on the chart, jumping up to #61 this week from #103 last week.

DREAMS ROCKETS UP THE BILLBOARD HOT 100

'Dreams' re-enters the Billboard Top 100 singles chart at #21 this week based on sales, streams and radio play. The song took off following Nathan Apodaca’s viral TikTok video flying up the iTunes and Spotify song charts. The song is currently No.1 on iTunes in the US and has been for a number of days.  This is the first time the song has been on the Hot 100 since August, 1977!

Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours,’ Named to Library of Congress’ Registry

The Library of Congress announced on Wednesday that it will preserve the recordings of 25 additional artists and personalities in the National Recording Registry, including Fleetwood Mac's 1977 album "Rumours".

Under the terms of the National Recording Preservation Act of 2000, the Librarian, with advice from the Library’s National Recording Preservation Board (NRPB), is tasked with annually selecting 25 titles that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and are at least 10 years old.

Full list at Variety.com

“Rumours,” (album), Fleetwood Mac (1977)
Stevie Nicks said: “Devastation leads to writing good things.” It’s little wonder, then, that Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” is so highly regarded, having been forged by the crumbling relationships of every member of the group. In 1974, the then-remaining members of Fleetwood Mac—drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie and his wife, vocalist and keyboard player Christine McVie—found themselves without a male vocalist or guitarist. A chance meeting at a recording studio led to guitarist and vocalist Lindsey Buckingham and vocalist Stevie Nicks, who were romantically involved, joining the group. The newly formed Anglo-American lineup soon struck gold with their eponymous 1975 album. They should have been on top of the world, but as they began working on their follow-up album, “Rumours,” relationships became so strained that, except as musically necessary, they would barely speak to each other while playing songs about each other. However, because the group had a sense that the songs were so strong, they not only endured, they prevailed. As engineer and co-producer Richard Dashut put it, they wanted to “ … make sure that every song on [“Rumours”] was worth its weight in gold.”

Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood Reveal Secrets Behind Fleetwood Mac Rumours

Longest Running Rumor In Music Turns 40

Fleetwood Mac released 'Rumours' 40 years ago on February 4, 1977
Dallas, TX - February 1, 2017.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio with Redbeard: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands  uncovers the stories behind the longest-running rumor in music history, 1977’s Grammy Award-winning album by Fleetwood Mac, Rumours.

In the mid-‘70s there was no other band more professionally and personally linked together than the five members of Fleetwood Mac. Barely three years earlier California duo and couple Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham had joined the British blues-rock band Fleetwood Mac collaborating on its breakout 1975 “White Album”, cementing the Mac’s long overdue commercial success while at the same time raising eye brows and ears around the world as to what could possibly come next.

Truth be told, the members of Fleetwood Mac were literally living secret and separate lives. One as band members and the other as lovers falling apart. It was this tension filled environment that produced some of the most genuine emotion filled music of the decade. Fueled by their talent and ambition what would normally break bands apart, somehow kept them together and produced one of the biggest selling albums of all-time.

Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and Mick Fleetwood share their story to In The Studio host Redbeard, warts and all.

“The album was really a catharsis of human emotions, if you like. And never at any one point, that I can remember, was it ever discussed by any one person that they wanted out, or that they couldnt’ handle it.” - Mick Fleetwood

“I mean “Go Your Own Way”, “The Chain”, “Dreams”, “Never Going Back Again”, “Don’t Stop” thinking about tomorrow, “Second Hand News”, “I Don’t Want to Know”, “Gold Dust Woman”… they were all about trying to make it through that particular period of time.”  - Stevie Nicks

“You’re talking about a situation during the making of Rumours which was very painful for me, working with someone I was still in love with, who didn’t want to be with me.”   - Lindsey Buckingham

Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" Surges on UK Top 100 Albums Chart From No.104 to No.11

Google Play and Amazon had a pretty amazing sale on last week in the UK for Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.  The entire mp3 downloadable album could temporarily be purchased for 99p. As a result, the album surged on this weeks UK Top 100 Albums Chart from No.104 to No.11 with sales of 8,718 units. In Scotland the album also leaped up the chart to No.12 from No.113 the previous week. The last time "Rumours" reached heights on this scale in the UK was back in late January, 2013 after the release of the 35th Anniversary edition of Rumours when it reached No.3.

In Australia "Greatest Hits" re-enters the Top 100 Albums Chart with the consistently selling "The Very Best Of" down this week to No.78 from No.67 last week.  Another consistent seller in Australia has been the 4CD box set "25 Years - The Chain". ON THIS DAY: Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" and "Dreams" both No.1 on U.S. Billboard Charts

On June 18, 1977 "Dreams" the second single released from "Rumours" topped Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart in it's 10th week of release.

The track written by Stevie Nicks, debuted on the Hot 100 on April 16, 1977 and spent 19 weeks in total on the chart logging 7 weeks in the top 10 and 4 weeks in the top 5. This is Fleetwood Mac's only No.1 single in the U.S.

While "Dreams" topped the singles chart, the album "Rumours" was firmly sitting at No.1 for a 7th non-consecutive week. The week following "Dreams" reaching the No.1 position, "Rumours" was certified 3x platinum in the U.S. signifying shipments of 3 million units. This is massive for an album released only 4 months prior. Within a year, "Rumours" would sell 8.2 million copies in the U.S. and would go on to eventually be certified 19 x platinum in the U.S. by the RIAA where it stands today. Worldwide sales are reported to be over 45 million.

36 Years Ago Today: Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" Hits No.1 on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Chart

June 18, 1977: Fleetwood Mac's only No.1 single "Dreams" Topped Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart spending one week at the summit.

The track debuted on the Hot 100 on April 16, 1977 and spent a total of 19 weeks on the chart making it's last appearance on the August 20, 1977 chart.  The song took 10 weeks to climb to the top, it logged a total of 7 weeks in the top 10 and 4 weeks in the top 5.

Taken from the album "Rumours" released in April of 1977 which the following week would be certified 3X Platinum in the U.S. signalling shipments of 3 million units in the U.S.  That's huge for just over 2 months!

The members of Fleetwood Mac were experiencing emotional upheavals while recording Rumours. Drummer Mick Fleetwood was going through a divorce. Bass player John McVie was separating from his wife, keyboard player Christine McVie. Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and Nicks were ending their eight-year relationship. "We had to go through this elaborate exercise of denial," explains Buckingham to Blender Magazine, "keeping our personal feelings in one corner of the room while trying to be professional in the other."

Nicks wrote the song at the Record Plant studio in Sausalito, California, in early 1976. "One day when I wasn't required in the main studio," remembers singer Stevie Nicks to Blender, "I took a Fender Rhodes piano and went into another studio that was said to belong to Sly, of Sly & the Family Stone. It was a black-and-red room, with a sunken pit in the middle where there was a piano, and a big black-velvet bed with Victorian drapes."

"I sat down on the bed with my keyboard in front of me," continues Nicks. "I found a drum pattern, switched my little cassette player on and wrote 'Dreams' in about 10 minutes. Right away I liked the fact that I was doing something with a dance beat, because that made it a little unusual for me."

When Nicks played the song to the rest of the group, they decided to record it the following day. Only a basic track was recorded at Sausalito. Recording assistant Cris Morris remembers that "all (they) kept was the drum track and live vocal from Stevie — the guitars and bass were added later in Los Angeles."

Christine McVie described the song as having "just three chords and one note in the left hand" and "boring" when Nicks played a rough version on the piano. McVie changed her mind, after Lindsey "fashioned three sections out of identical chords, making each section sound completely different. He created the impression that there’s a thread running through the whole thing."

"Dreams" was the second single from the Rumours album in the US, and it reached the number one spot on June 18, 1977, and held it for one week. It went to #24 in the United Kingdom as the third single, following "Go Your Own Way" (#38) and "Don't Stop" (#32).

Christine McVie briefly came out of retirement to talk about her work on Fleetwood Mac’s classic 1977 Rumours album.

Christine McVie came briefly out of retirement to talk about her work on Fleetwood Mac’s classic 1977 Rumours album. McVie, who quit the band in 1998, told Mojo that when Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined the band in late-1974, she immediately knew she had to step up her game, explaining, “When Stevie and Lindsey joined I was in awe of the way they wrote and sang together. It was tough to compete and be good enough. I wasn’t a prolific writer to any degree. I didn’t start writing songs properly until I joined Fleetwood Mac. I was quite a novice on (1972′s) Bare Trees and (1971′s) Future Games.”

When asked if she was in touch with her former bandmates, McVie said: “I am in touch with (ex-husband) John (McVie) very often. Stevie and Lindsey not so often.”

She spoke about the weird situation of finally catching a Fleetwood Mac concert as an audience member, joking, “I have a really good time when I go. I can stand at the soundboard and watch them sweat. They do my songs, ‘Don’t Stop’ and ‘World Turning,’ but they are limited to what they can do of mine. I think they tried ‘You Make Loving Fun,’ but I don’t think the sound of their vocals were right. But I wish them well.”

In 2003 Christine McVie says that after attending a then-recent Fleetwood Mac concert in London, she had no regrets about splitting from the band and leaving the road behind: “I just felt kind of relieved, if you want to know the truth, ’cause I, I went backstage afterwards, and they were all so tired, and, I just don’t think I could do that anymore. It’s kind of, if you like, verified that I’d made the right decision.”

Fleetwood Mac will release two expanded versions of Rumours on January 29th, featuring a remastered version of the multi-platinum collection, along with two discs of outtakes, and a new “making of” documentary. Both available to pre-order on Amazon or iTunes.

The band — featuring Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie — kicks off its 34-date North American tour on April 4th at Columbus, Ohio’s Nationwide Arena.  Tickets available at Ticketmaster

Christine's remarks can be found in the January, 2013 edition of Mojo Magazine.
