Bob Lefsetz gets it! >> Stevie Nicks "Secret Love"

Loved what he had to say about Stevie's "Secret Love" and the album "In Your Dreams" as a whole...

Bob Lefsetz: Welcome To My World - "Forgotten"

"Secret Love"
Stevie Nicks

I smile every time this comes on my iPod.

Once upon a time, radio was the filter, before it became completely corporatized, littered with twenty two minutes of commercials per hour and we all stopped listening.

I know, I know, that's not completely true, the little girls listen to Top Forty and the oldsters revere the obscurities on the NonComm stations, but what about someone positively mainstream, a rocker who once was...where is she supposed to be played?

Nowhere.

So, Stevie Nicks's best album in decades, maybe her best ever...went unheard.

Used to be artists spent months and hundreds of thousands of dollars perfecting a sound, knowing listeners were waiting with eager anticipation. Now...no one cares.

And that positively sucks.

Which is why he (or she!) who invents the filter will own the future, will make all the money.

It can't be done with algorithms, otherwise Pandora wouldn't suck. It depends completely on humans, picking certified winners for the time-challenged.

If you ever liked Stevie Nicks, you can't hate this. You can't shake your head and say it's dreck. You may not love it, but you can't dismiss it. And what more can you ask for?

Ignore the naysayers, who hate Fleetwood Mac because they were too successful. The hipsters who can't like what everyone else does. That's the fringe. The middle, and I don't mean that disparagingly, the middle contains most people, would absolutely LOVE "Secret Love". But it came out and made barely a ripple and was forgotten.

It needs to be brought back.

First and foremost, there's the sound. Like a dark night in the middle of the summer, and suddenly a door opens and you go inside.

And what's up with that buzz saw guitar that keeps coming back, adding edge...I LOVE IT!

And the changes.

And the background vocals.

"I am not asking forever from you
I'm just asking to be held for a while
In a timeless search for love that might work"

You get older and you forsake your dreams. You're not looking for perfection, you're just looking for something, in a mental wilderness where there are people all around you, but very little connection.

This music is not made for the immature, it's made for you. With the rough edges, with the love handles, with the wisdom of years.

Madonna misfired with "MDNA", she wanted to be forever young.

Stevie Nicks aged. Not gracefully, none of us ever do. And she delivered something positively adult, and for that she's penalized?

The media only focuses on that with smooth skin, that which is brand new. But "Secret Love" is so in the pocket, so right, that it could become a cultural staple.

If people only heard it.

Review: Lindsey Buckingham Live in Boston

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM REVS UP 'THE SMALL MACHINE'
PAT HEALY
Metro.us
With the aid of only his guitars and voice, Lindsey Buckingham turned in an impressive set at the Wilbur in Boston on Tuesday night.

When Lindsey Buckingham treated the half-full house at the Wilbur Theatre to "Go Insane," something remarkable happened. Though the Boston crowd was affectingly vocal on Tuesday night, it was impossible to overlook the empty rows on the floor and the unused third-floor balcony of the 1,200-capacity venue. But with his performance of his biggest solo hit (and frequent Fleetwood Mac live tune), a seismic shift of sympathy occurred, where instead of feeling badly for a performer who should be able to fill such a small hall, one could instead feel badly for every person who didn't buy a ticket for any of those unoccupied seats.

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM RETURNS TO THE CALVIN
Lindsey Buckingham has co-led one of the biggest-selling rock groups in history while letting his freak flag fly. He's had mega-success on his own terms, keeping his quirky soul intact, and the legendary vocalist/guitarist/songwriter/producer returns to the Calvin in Northampton, MA on Saturday at 8 p.m.

"Lindsey Buckingham’s fingerpicking remains razor sharp and freight-train propulsive"

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM
B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
New York City, NY - Monday & Tuesday June 4th and June 5th
Lindsey Buckingham does too many things too well for one of his talents not to go overlooked. Millions know him as the singer-songwriter of the Fleetwood Mac smash “Go Your Own Way,” and fans credit him as the driving force behind the band’s fractured epic, Tusk. But one thing you don’t hear much about is Buckingham’s guitar-heroism—a shame, since the man’s pickless playing is straight-up deadly.

Nicks Nixes Interview Footage on New Music with Buckingham

Lindsey Buckingham Talks Possible Nicks Reunion
In new radio documentary by Pete Paphides, Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham says "I would love to work with Stevie [Nicks] again"
The Quietus

Less than 24 hours remain to listen to last weeks broadcast from BBC4 on "Follow-up Albums" featuring Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk".  Pete Paphides 3 part documentary on bands that made a splash with an album only to follow it up with a left turn.  Great piece on the band with new interviews from Lindsey and Stevie.

Catch it at the BBC4 website

The above headline grabbing headline from The Quietus article opens a topic that has come up again and again regarding the idea of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks reuniting as a duo (Buckingham Nicks).  It's a topic that's come up in the past, something the fan community would certainly welcome and what most people expect to happen if and when the Buckingham Nicks album ever sees the light of day on CD.  Their first and only album together from 1973 has never been released on CD.  Lindsey and Stevie both own the album have have the rights to do whatever they want with it.. and both have blamed each other for it not happening.  With the 40th anniversary (yes 40th, if you can believe that!) of the album approaching (2013). It would be the perfect opportunity to bring some attention to this really great album... Either re-release it as a stand alone, or record some new music together and release it as a double album, kind of a then and now... I think it would be cool!  Then do some live shows!

Anyway... the REALLY interesting part of this article is where Pete Paphide apparently confirms with The Quietus that portions of Stevie's interview regarding Lindsey working on new songs which he hoped the two of them could record together had been edited out of the interview footage by someone on Stevie's staff, who recorded the interview... Pete apparently also said that Lindsey was inspired to write the new music by the death of Stevie's mother whom he had known since both he and Stevie were teenagers.  Pete also said that Stevie was to meet up with Lindsey the day after their interview together.  What that meeting would have been about is unknown.  Could have been about the new music or the future of Fleetwood Mac.

"When we spoke to Paphides, he confirmed that when he interviewed Nicks for the programme (in a section that was never broadcast), she had mentioned that Buckingham had been working on some new songs, seemingly with a view to record them together. He had been inspired to do so after the death of Nicks' mother, whom he had known since he and Nicks got together as teenagers. Nicks was apparently due to meet Buckingham the day after Paphides' interview took place. The interview, Paphides explained, was recorded by one of Nicks' staff, and when it was sent back to him that section had been deleted."

Lindsey Buckingham is a rare mega rock star who sounds as easy with a scream as he does with a whisper

Lindsey Buckingham goes his own way
By George Lenker
Masslive.com

Although he is neither a Fleetwood nor a Mac, Lindsey Buckingham is as responsible as anyone for the massive success of the band that combined those two names.

Buckingham and his then-romantic partner Stevie Nicks transformed a solid but little-known British blues band into a monster hit-making machine in the 1970s. Penning such hits as "Go Your Own Way," "The Chain," and "Second Hand News," Buckingham showed both great pop sensibilities and the ability to push the band in new directions. While 1975's "Fleetwood Mac" and 1977's "Rumours" showcased mostly catchy pop fare, 1979's "Tusk" found Buckingham pushing Fleetwood Mac in more adventurous directions.

Since his Fleetwood Mac days, however, the singer-songwriter-guitarist has not exactly rested on his laurels.

Lindsey Buckingham B.B. King Blues Club June 4-5
By ANDY BATTAGLIA
Wall Street Journal

Lindsey Buckingham is a rare mega rock star who sounds as easy with a scream as he does with a whisper. He's tended more toward the latter in his solo work the past few years, with a lightly brushed folk sound that takes up lyrical subjects such as aging and introspection. But he has a vast and significant songbook, of course, to mine from all of his fateful, fitful years in Fleetwood Mac. In a show here tagged as "An Intimate Evening with…," Mr. Buckingham will perform by himself in a considerably smaller venue than usual, with a set dedicated to his 2011 album "Seeds We Sow," as well as classics from his storied past. He has not been one to shy away from vintage material in general, so expect more than a few hits—all delivered in a solo guitar style that can siphon out the essence of songs that are pure to their core.

Happy Birthday Stevie Nicks... Born On This Day May 26, 1948

ONE YEAR AGO fans filled The Wiltern Theatre in L.A., including myself, to celebrate Stevie's Birthday and also to celebrate the release of her new album "In Your Dreams"... The show was dubbed a "Record Release Concert"  What a party it was!... As you made your way into the theatre you couldn't help but pass by trays of stacked up cupcakes plus this giant 3 panel Birthday card that could signed and I'm assuming was somehow delivered to Stevie later... It was a great night full of new music from the new album and a few surprise guests including Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Dave Stewart and Mike Campbell.  Although it was Stevie's Birthday and we were there for her, the night it seemed turned out to be an amazing gift back to her fans.

Happy Birthday Stevie!
