Fleeting Inspiration: The Invincible Fleetwood Mac are back... and the kids think they're alright.

by Dorian Lynskey
British - GQ, October, 2013

In the Reynolds Girls 1989 single "I'd Rather Jack", a peculiar moment of year zero militancy in the catalogue of hitmakers Stock Aitken Waterman, the teenage siblings insisted, "I'd rather jack than Fleetwood Mac," the band being a conveniently rhyming example of the kind of middle-aged millionaire has-beens that the rave generation allegedly had no time for.  Who needs them?  We have Yazz now!

But 24 years later, as Fleetwood Mac approach the UK leg of their latest world tour, their influence is, to quote one of their most infectious songs, everywhere.  Their audiophile fanaticism was a touchstone for Daft Punk's Random Access Memories.  Last year, the indie tribute album Just Tell Me That You Want Me featured the likes of MGMT and Tame Impala. Mumford & Sons recently closed their massive London show with a massed rendition of "The Chain". Hot Chip even perform a dance floor version of "Everywhere", proving once and for all that jacking and Fleetwood Mac-ing aren't mutually exclusive.  If the whispers are true and Fleetwood Mac headline Glastonbury next year, their status as twenty-somethings' new favourite classic rockers will be confirmed.

If only the Reynolds Girls had done their research they would have realised that Fleetwood Mac are unkillable. Their wikipedia page reads like a Russian novel, with new characters popping up before exiting in grim circumstances, including mental illness, alcoholism, adultery and religious cult.  By the time they absorbed romantically involved duo Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks in 1975 in a kind of last-ditch corporate merger, the band had lost seven members, with only the rock-solid rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie weathering the perpetual storm.

The new vinyl box set 1969-1972 (Rhino) shines light on their underrated output during the difficult years, but it's the classic 1975-1987 line-up that has acquired mythic status.  For the first time since the Beatles, a band had three distinct singer-songwriters at the top of their game.

Christine McVie sang the airy love songs with crystalline precision and
the same pragmatism that led her to retire from touring in 1997;
Nicks was a husky SoCal mystic, tougher than her swirly wardrobe
suggested; and Buckingham was the thorny alpha male.

FLEETWOOD MAC BEFORE BUCKINGHAM AND NICKS: AN ESSENTIAL PRIMER

For the last couple of years, Fleetwood Mac have been the latest vintage soft rock band to become fashionable among the sort of college students who still frequent used record shops. But it seems like only the Mac's 1975-'87 period, when Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were fronting the band and they were scoring massive hits, has penetrated the consciousness of today's bearded youth, with their earlier incarnations largely unknown. Let's rectify that with a countdown of the essential pre-Buckingham Nicks Fleetwood Mac albums.

The moment Stevie Nicks met Leon Russell [Video]

During the filming of Cameron Crowe's The Union - on the collaboration between Elton John and Leon Russell, Stevie Nicks dropped in to the Village studio where they were recording to meet Leon and to thank him...

I believe this was filmed during the time Stevie was in the studio laying down tracks for "In Your Dreams" in 2010.  This film "The Union" made it's premiere in late 2011 and was televised on HBO in January, 2012.

Stevie tells Leon that after she and Lindsey Buckingham opened for him as part of the band Fritz in the early ’70s,

“That’s when the two of us thought,
‘That’s it. We’re gonna go to LA. We’re gonna do it.”

SAVE THE DATE: Sound City Doc Australian TV Premiere Feat. Fleetwood Mac September 12 - 9pm MAX TV

Dave Grohl's critically-acclaimed documentary to premiere on MAX Thursday September 12 at 9pm AEST

Rock icon, Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) makes his directorial debut in the feature length documentary, Sound City. His homage to the iconic LA recording studio, Grohl once described the star-studded film as his "most important work". The untold story of American rock, this journey through an integral part of music history will premiere on MAX Thursday September 12 at 9pm.

For over four decades, Sound City recording studios became the birthplace for some of the world's most cherished music. From Neil Young's After The Goldrush and Fleetwood Mac's eponymous album, through to Tom Petty's Damn the Torpedoes, Nirvana's Nevermind, Rage Against the Machine's self-titled release and Johnny Cash's Unchained to name just a few.

Sound City is an insightful journey through time, revealing the story of real rock 'n' roll history and celebrating the human element of music. The film examines the legacy of the now-defunct Sound City studios and its legendary, custom-built Neve 8028 recording console that was involved in the making of so many classic albums.

Through interviews with legendary musicians and producers (including Neil Young, Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, Rick Rubin, Lars Ulrich, Mick Fleetwood and Josh Homme), Sound City sets out to uncover and define the intangible magic within those wires and walls that was responsible for such an incredible history of contemporary music.

Along the way we learn how Mick Fleetwood met Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham at the studios, leading to them joining Fleetwood Mac. We find out why musicians and producers such as Butch Vig, Frank Black, Trent Reznor and Lars Ulrich all chose to work in an analogue environment at Sound City over other, more state of the art studios. Throughout the documentary we also track the growth of digital music and the inevitable death of analogue recording which changed the industry and Sound City forever.

Critic's pick: Fleetwood Mac, 'Then Play On'

By Walter Tunis — Contributing Music Writer
Kentucky.com

The newest edition of Then Play On, the definitive studio recording by the Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac, ends with a subtle guitar instrumental titled World in Harmony.

The music blooms from sparse, autumnal ambience into a summery, almost country-esque serenade. It's a quiet study in harmony and conflict, opposites that always seem to surface when Fleetwood Mac is at its best.

Named after the oft-quoted opening to Shakespeare's Twelfth Night ("If music be the food of love, play on"), the album is a masterwork that faded from view as the band shot to pop stardom in the mid-'70s with the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. But Then Play On, Fleetwood Mac's third studio work, takes us back to 1969 and remains a portrait of lost rock 'n' roll innocence. It was the first record to feature co-guitarist Danny Kirwan and the last to include band founder Green. The band's third guitarist, Jeremy Spencer, is curiously absent from the recording.

Stevie Nicks: The Original Rebel 'My whole life is a rebellious moment,' she laughs.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE ORIGINAL REBEL

by Chrissy Iley
Elle-UK is on newsstands now.

Fashion is having a rebel moment. But long before maverick icons Grace Jones in black rubber, Courtney Love in ripped tights and lace, and Chrissie Hynde who cut her own hair and never removed her leather jacket, there was Stevie Nicks.  ‘My whole life is a rebellious moment,’ she laughs – a long, throaty, mocking-the-world-laugh.
