Pushing it to the Mac: Tribute CD reinvents Fleetwood
CD finds fresh magic with new interpretations of hits like 'Dreams,' 'Oh Well' and 'Rhiannon'
New York Daily News ★★★

Like the Bible, people can read into Fleetwood Mac whatever they want.
With a storied, 45-year history involving 16 musicians and seven key songwriters — each of whom had a turn at the helm through five distinct incarnations — there’s an uncommonly deep trove of material to interpret to your heart’s content.

Fleetwood tribute album is less than Mac-nificent
USA Today ★★1/2 (out of four)

USA Today 8/14
How do you bring fresh insights to some of the most accomplished, infectious pop recordings of the past 50 years? That's the main dilemma plaguing Just Tell Me That You Want Me, a new tribute album pairing mostly alt-pop artists with Fleetwood Mac songs.

17 Takes on Legacy of a Band
New York Times

“Just Tell Me That You Want Me: A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac”
With few exceptions, multi-artist tribute albums are irritatingly patchwork, too sympathetic or too perfunctory, overthought or underthought.

But here’s such a tribute album that might claim your attention for a little longer. “Just Tell Me That You Want Me,” with 17 tracks by 17 artists — mostly indie-ish, rock and electronic, many-striped, individually produced and organized into a whole by Randall Poster and Gelya Robb — has Fleetwood Mac as its subject. What’s the spirit there, exactly?

Each generation discovers the brooding magic of the Mac anew
NME

Fleetwood Mac were always cool. Their recording sessions had more sexual tension than a book club reading of Fifty Shades Of Grey. The band members treated private jets like Boris Bikes. They tried to credit their dealer on an album sleeve. They recorded an album, 1977’s ‘Rumours’, that’s sold over 40million copies. Always, always cool.

Of ‘Just Tell Me That You Want Me’’s 17 tunes, only seven weren’t written by Stevie Nicks. Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham gets a couple of dedications as Tame Impala faithfully replicate ‘That’s All For Everyone’ with a psychedelic hue and The Crystal Ark take on ‘Tusk’, which fails to out-weird the original, which was recorded live with a marching band in an empty football stadium. Keyboardist Christine McVie is given some love from The New Pornographers, who make ‘Think About Me’ sound dirtier than it is.

The last thing the world needs is a Fleetwood Mac tribute album with a hand-drawn penguin on the cover staring back at us every time we order an iced caramel macchiato. Still, here it is: the Starbucks-sanctioned "Just Tell Me That You Want Me," which sees a diverse group of performers - young, old, indifferent - take on the hirsute songs of heartache and treachery that fueled the 1970s.

The 1970s are long gone, but Fleetwood Mac’s influence lives on.
★★★ 3 stars
Washington Times

“Just Tell Me That You Want Me” pushes the band’s music into the 21st century by rounding up a dozen or so modern acts — including MGMT, Best Coast and Lykke Li — and asking them to put their own stamp on the group’s classics.

The album skates by on the strength of its diversity. There’s something jarring — and slightly fun — about hearing Miss Faithfull’s wizened croak immediately after the New Pornographers’ bright harmonies, and the disc’s stronger covers tend to carry the weaker ones.

Fleetwood Mac’s influence on alternative music seems to be becoming ever greater as they are cited by innumerable musicians from across the musical spectrum. As well as a large number of name checks, 2012 has seen yet more Fleetwood Mac interest generated by the announcement that the group will reconvene for a 2013 tour. It is therefore an extremely apposite time for ‘Just Tell Me That You Want Me’, a tribute album recorded by a disparate mix of alternative musicians young and old to be released.

Even when Fleetwood Mac was one of the most popular bands in the world, its sound wasn’t always easy to pigeonhole. Hailed (and in some cases dismissed) as the epitome of laid-back SoCal soft rock in the mid-’70s, the Fleetwood Mac of Rumours and Tusk relied on three songwriters with differing visions. While Christine McVie delivered bright, AM-ready pop, Stevie Nicks served as McVie’s mystical, FM-after-midnight counterpart, and Lindsey Buckingham ranged toward the arty, trying to see if Brian Wilson, Donald Fagen, and David Byrne could co-exist within a song. And even before Buckingham and Nicks joined the band, Fleetwood Mac had Peter Green penning some of the fiercest blues-rock in a competitive English scene, and Danny Kirwan and Bob Welch (among others) filling in the gaps with solidly middle-of-the-road hippie soul.

So it’s not all that surprising that the Fleetwood Mac tribute album Just Tell Me That You Want Me fails to do justice to the diversity of the band’s output. Of the disc’s 17 tracks, 10 are Nicks songs, leaving only three by Green, two by Buckingham, and one each from McVie and Welch.

The fact that the collection is a bit of a mess is a shame, but also a tribute to the band in its own way. I think of that line from "Storms", rendered here as a lovely, creaky lament by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Matt Sweeney, which rings true as ever: "I've never been a deep blue sea/ I've always been a storm."

‘Just Tell Me That You Want Me: A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac’
Boston Globe

There have been several tribute albums to the classic UK-American rock band that is Fleetwood Mac, but this especially eclectic 17-track collection features a clutch of indie hipsters — and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top — dipping deep into the Mac catalog (including the bluesy pre-Buckingham-Nicks era) and taking some interesting liberties with the source material.

It's a bit of a curiosity that in the past year or two, Fleetwood Mac has turned into a cornerstone of influence in indie-rock. Certainly many of those in their 30s grew up with their parents playing Rumours and Tusk, but 20-somethings today would be lucky to even have been born by the time Fleetwood Mac released the last of their first run Buckingham/Nicks-era albums, Tango In the Night.

Fleetwood Mac: magic you just can't cover

Most of the artists on a new Fleetwood Mac tribute compilation are a million miles away from capturing the band's pure emotion.
Mac and cheese … Our verdict on tribute album Just Tell Me That You Want Me.

The Guardian UK
by Priya Elan

"At the heart of Fleetwood Mac were three astounding songwriters and vocalists who were steeped in blues and folk traditions. Attempts to recreate this magic tend to get lost among the rhetoric of its retelling. Inevitably, the sonic and emotional distance between the cover and original is massive."

"These covers show that many mistake the Mac's bloody-heart-on-sleeve honesty for slick Californian pop.  May I suggest investing in a copy of Tusk instead?"

"There is comfort in the lusciousness of Stevie Nicks' voice, her intricate lyrics" By Elizabeth Blackney Huffington Post

Stevie Nicks, Feminism, and Becoming Women in Full

"There is comfort in the lusciousness of Stevie Nicks' voice, her intricate lyrics. The arrangement of each song constructs the perfect ride for each soul. For forty years, she has lived life on her own terms. As witnesses to her creative success, personal triumphs, and tribulations, we all have an image of her in mind. The alabaster skin, the honey colored hair of a siren, her penetrating gaze eats the camera's lens."

LESS THAN $5 ON AMAZON
STEVIE NICKS - BELLA DONNA
31st Anniversary - July 27th
Not likely because of, but nice timing non-the less. Amazon have discounted Stevie's first solo album 1981's Bella Donna to $4.99 just prior to it's 31st Anniversary.  With these deep discounts on albums that Amazon has been having, boat loads of older titles have been showing up on Billboard's Album Charts, Fleetwood Mac albums included.  It was no surprise a few weeks ago when Bella Donna also discounted at the time also made a rare appearance on the Catalogue Albums and Catalogue Digital Albums Charts.  The album is up for grabs again on Amazon for $4.99, not for the mp3 album this time, but for the actual disc.  Don't have it?  Good time to buy if you don't... AMAZON

Too bad the new album "In Your Dreams" couldn't get a discount like this.  With Stevie profile raised while on tour in the US right now, it's the perfect opportunity.

You can pick up a digital copy (mp3 album) of Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" right now for $5 on Amazon.

Cool write-up on Stereogum today....
THE FACES OF FLEETWOOD MAC
by: Aaron Lariviere
Stereogum

Stubborn as hell. It’s the only way to describe drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie. They’re the most persistent, tireless, roll-with-the-punches rhythm section in rock history. Since original (and long-gone) bandleader Peter Green founded Fleetwood Mac in 1967 — named for his bandmates, with the “Mac” added to entice McVie to join — the pair saw lineups disintegrate in every way imaginable. One guitarist fled mid-tour to join a Christian cult. Two frontmen fell victim to mental illness brought on by LSD. Inter-band love (and sex) famously tore the band apart while massive success brought in a mountain of cash and an avalanche of powdered distraction. But these two soldiered on, keeping the band active throughout 17 albums, 70-plus singles, and five decades — forever locked in.

STEVIE NICKS | Fleetwood Mac | Lindsey Buckingham: One day... One post!

Two new Fleetwood Mac covers emerge in the last two days
First, Stereogum premiered Washed Out's cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Straight Back" on July 16th and earlier today, Spin premiered Tame Impala's take on Fleetwood Mac's "That's All For Everyone".  Both tracks are featured on the Tribute to Fleetwood Mac album "Just Tell Me That You Want Me" which hits stores August 14th.  Pre-order your copy on Amazon

Washed Out "Straight Back"

Tame Impala "That's All For Everyone"

Both tracks, I think, sound really great!  I'm all for spreading the Fleetwood Mac love and if these artists, who to some are familiar and to others are completely unknown, can introduce Fleetwood Mac to their audience, and vice versa, then I say go for it!

ROD STEWART AND STEVIE NICKS
LIVE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. JULY 27TH.
Goldstar has over 1/2 off tickets to the show July 27 at the Verizon Center.
Two legends for an amazing price!  Who wouldn't!

Get your tickets at GOLDSTAR

Wow! is it just me or does it feel like Livenation is really pushing this show! If you been following along with the contests that I've posted, it just seems like the Washington date has had it's fair share (and more) of contests and ticket give-away opportunities.  In the last week alone there have been countless contests through tv stations, radio stations etc. and now with Goldstar, they've slashed ticket prices to $20.00!  Either the show isn't selling that well, or they are just trying to top up the venue.  In any case, for those on a budget, $20 bucks to see two Hall of Famers in action is a pretty spectacular deal - even if the tickets are in the rafters!  Plus it's a Friday night! I'd get in on this deal if you can and are in the Washington D.C. area.

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM
SECOND SELL-OUT REPORTED

At the other end of the spectrum.... Lindsey Buckingham is selling out venues, albeit smaller venues... but still he's moving some tickets!  So far two are reporting sell-outs. Nashville, TN (Franklin actually) and Austin, TX with other venues either close to being sold, or well on their way.  To me, it almost seems like the venues are selling better on this leg of the tour then they did on his California leg and upper east coast dates earlier this spring... I don't really know that for sure, it's just a perception.  In any case... Good for Lindsey!  He deserves it!  If you are close to one of his shows...  Check him out before Fleetwood Mac steals him away for next years tour.  Could be awhile before he's able to get back out on the road solo.  Tour dates here

Stevie Nicks sprinkles her Gold Dust over rapt audience at Borgata
by: Nicky Vallee
Philly2Philly.com

By her own acknowledgement, Stevie Nicks was late to the stage Sunday night. Eleven months late, to be exact. Due to vocal issues, the legendary singer and iconic front woman for classic rock royalty Fleetwood Mac was forced to cancel her August 2011 show at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. She certainly made up for lost time, wowing the crowd with her trademark rasp, string of hit songs, and inimitable gypsy goddess style.

“I’ve danced across the stages of the world,” she informed the audience, filled with loyal and energized fans, many of them dressed in flowing dresses and bangles. “Let’s just have fun tonight,” she encouraged. “Let’s have a really good time.”

Song Premiere: Best Coast Performs Fleetwood Mac's 'Rhiannon'

Song Premiere:
Best Coast Performs Fleetwood Mac's 'Rhiannon'

Best Coast covers Fleetwood Mac's 1975 smash "Rhiannon" on a forthcoming tribute album — a task which clearly requires quite a bit of reverence, to the point where singer Bethany Cosentino even channels Stevie Nicks' warbling rasp. And, while the song's familiar guitar line is replaced with a dramatically simplified piano melody, the result captures the melancholic yearning of "Rhiannon" — its mystical side, its understanding of unattainable love — without losing the beach-bound giddiness of Best Coast's simple, shiny sound.

Review Lindsey Buckingham Live at Musikfest Cafe - Bethlehem, PA 6/10/12

FLEETWOOD MAC'S LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM GOES HIS OWN WAY, SOLO AT MUSIKFEST CAFE
by John J. Moser
Lehigh Valley Music

When he plays for Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham always seems like the intense lead guitarist whose fervor is about to bubble over at any moment.

Playing alone and acoustic Sunday at Musikfest Café at SteelStacks in Bethlehem,  Buckingham was precisely that: a fervent singer and guitarist who performed every song with such intensity that it did, at points, boil over.

FLEETWOOD MAC TRIBUTE ALBUM UPDATE:
PLUS.... A little more info on that Fleetwood Mac compilation/tribute album that's been surfacing little by little over the last couple of years.  Just to refresh your memory, Michelle Branch posted on twitter back in February, 2010 that she was in the studio working with Waddy Wachtel on the Fleetwood Mac song "Say You Love Me" with Stevie producing... saying it was for a Fleetwood Mac Tribute...

Jump ahead to May, 2012 and classic rock station B102.7 reported that Trixie Whitley contributed to a song that Marianne Faithfull had recorded for the album and that it looked like it was coming out this year.

And just today... Paste Magazine posted an interview with former Shutter To Think frontman and Baby ringleader Craig Wedren and when asked by Paste was was next for him he said, "I’m doing a Fleetwood Mac cover song with Annie Clark from St. Vincent. for this Fleetwood Mac compilation which I guess is coming out this summer."

So even though this project appears to be coming together... it's still very much a bunch of bits and pieces of info that don't make a lot of sense right now... Some obscure non-mainstream artists (aside from Michelle) seem to be associated with this project.  Not sure if it's leaning towards country, or alternative or what... We shall see.

Fleetwood Mac Tribute Album Coming 2012 includes Marianne Faithfull

Fleetwood Mac: Tribute Album Coming
According to B102.7 Classic Rock and American Music Channel, that Fleetwood Mac tribute album we first heard about in February, 2010 is finally on it's way.. and it looks like it might be released later this year!!  This is likely the tribute album that Michelle Branch talked about in February, 2010 when she recorded "Say You Love Me" with Waddy Wachtel and Stevie Nicks produced.  See the February, 2010 post here

American Music Channel talk about Trixie Whitley recording a track with producer Joe Henry along with Marc Ribot, Chris Wood and Kenny Wollesen for the album and say that Trixie also contributed to a song that Marianne Faithfull recorded for the album. Trixie Whitley is the daughter of the late Chris Whitley and co-fronts the group Black Dub with Daniel Lanois.  No other artists have been announced yet on the project.

MICHELLE BRANCH PRODUCED BY STEVIE NICKS - FLEETWOOD MAC TRIBUTE ALBUM

Over the last few hours, Michelle Branch has been dropping hints as to what she's been up to.  A few photos surfaced - one of which was the lyrics to "Say You Love Me" by Fleetwood Mac, the other was the snapshot below of Waddy Wachtel.

Now... According to Michelle Branch's twitter page, she's in the studio singing "Say You Love Me" for a Fleetwood Mac Tribute album.... And the cool thing is Stevie Nicks is producing the track for her.
