Fleetwood Mac: Producer Ken Caillat On 'Making Rumours' - Huffington Post Interview

Fleetwood Mac: Producer Ken Caillat On 'Making Rumours'

Behind every great band there's often great drama, and Fleetwood Mac was no exception. The band marked the 70s with huge hits, including its album Rumours, which produced four top-ten singles, stayed on the charts for 31 weeks, sold over 40 million copies and won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1977. But Fleetwood Mac's creativity and rise to stardom was marked by chaos: divorce, infidelity, intense creative struggles, and endless partying, which nearly tore the band apart.

In Making Rumours: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album, Ken Caillat chronicles what went on behind the scenes with band members Christine and John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, and how the band overcame obstacles despite adversity. "All of us were in our 20s," says Caillat. "We were young and kind of wide-eyed. Success hadn't struck anyone yet. I actually don't think this book should be called a music book, It's really a success story about personal triumph. And I was really lucky to be there."

Caillat has worked with a number of notable artists, including Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, and his own daughter, Grammy-winning singer Colbie Caillat. (Caillat produced her number one album, Breakthrough.) Making Rumours coincides with the 35th anniversary of the release of Rumours.

Review: Lindsey Buckingham Salano Beach, CA May 3rd

Lindsey Buckingham - Live at The Belly Up
Salano Beach, CA - May 3, 2012
Written by Rick Ostop
KPRIFM
Towards the end of his show at the Belly Up Thursday night, May 3, Lindsey Buckingham explained how Fleetwood Mac is the “big machine” and what he is doing now is “just me - the little machine.” Though the “machine” might be smaller--just him and his multitude of guitars--the results were grandiose.

Buckingham, taking the stage for his hour and a half set by himself, seemed a slight bit tentative as he started working on a simple chord pattern. He wrestled with it over and over, before slipping into the first song of the night “That’s The Way Love Goes” (Note: It was actually Castaway Dreams) from his new album Seeds We Sow.  The new song was an interesting choppy choice for an opener and left the room kind of flat.  The familiarity, though, and the crowd response to the second number “Bleed To Love Her” was a whole different story. The fire and intensity Buckingham put into the performance seemed to awaken any apprehension he might have carried.  Buckingham drove the Fleetwood Mac song hard, soaring his vocals and intensely working his amazing finger picking guitar playing. To be able to carry off a full show by yourself, you have to display a confidence and talent level that can hold and captivate an audience. And when Buckingham finished “Bleed To Love Her,” he had everyone in the palm of his hand.

And here’s where the Belly Up truly shines. To be able to be no more than 10 feet away from a legendary musician, who you usually see playing an arena, is what this venue is all about. Being able to experience an artist with such stature and clout that close gave the audience a rare glimpse at Buckingham’s fascinating finger-picking guitar stylings.

Fleetwood Mac Tribute Album Coming 2012 includes Marianne Faithfull

Fleetwood Mac: Tribute Album Coming
According to B102.7 Classic Rock and American Music Channel, that Fleetwood Mac tribute album we first heard about in February, 2010 is finally on it's way.. and it looks like it might be released later this year!!  This is likely the tribute album that Michelle Branch talked about in February, 2010 when she recorded "Say You Love Me" with Waddy Wachtel and Stevie Nicks produced.  See the February, 2010 post here

American Music Channel talk about Trixie Whitley recording a track with producer Joe Henry along with Marc Ribot, Chris Wood and Kenny Wollesen for the album and say that Trixie also contributed to a song that Marianne Faithfull recorded for the album. Trixie Whitley is the daughter of the late Chris Whitley and co-fronts the group Black Dub with Daniel Lanois.  No other artists have been announced yet on the project.

Lindsey Buckingham At The Fred Kavli Theatre

The widely heralded musical brilliance of Buckingham was put on incredible display during an intimate performance Sunday evening at the Fred Kavli Theatre in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Armed with an impressive arsenal of custom guitars that he would switch out between each song, Buckingham took the stage at 8 p.m. a black blazer to perform the subdued "Cast Away Dreams" from his 2006 album, Under The Skin.

Lindsey Buckingham plays to packed Coach House in San Juan Capistrano

Lindsey Buckingham Live at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA - May 5, 2012
setlist provided by Mark Pickard
A few changes! Lindsey brought back the leather jacket for this show... and dropped "Dancing" from the setlist at the last minute without a replacement.

Dancing's actually a really beautiful song lyrically, and can be interpreted in a plethora of ways if you think about it in terms of the history of Lindsey and Stevie's relationship... I'm not sure what to make of it. It's a little underwhelming given his guitar picking talent... Sounds like a song that might close out a future album if he ever records it.  But a new song nonetheless and you have to give him credit for throwing out a curve ball.  Plus since he's carrying the show alone, the fingers likely need a rest period midway.

With "Dancing" dropped from the set, and who knows if it will resurface, we are lucky to have the song on film, captured Friday night at The Wiltern (video below). One less track in the set leaves 13 tunes.  It's looking a little slim!  Lindsey needs to throw in another Seeds We Sow album track given he's only playing the title track from the new album.  A couple of suggestions and personal favourites of mine from Seeds would be Rock Away Blind, or Gone Too Far!  Or from Gift of Screws how about Bel Air Rain? Or surprise us all and go deep and pull out something obscure from Tusk, but not Tusk!  There's a lot to choose from!

Fleetwood Mac | Stevie Nicks Chart/Sales Update: US | UK

Interesting what one repeat of a couple of documentaries can do for album/song sales in the UK and to a certain extent in Ireland as well.

Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop" 2009 documentary aired on BBC4 again last evening (May 4th) with Peter Green's "Man of the World" documentary following.  Both would repeat late in the night.  As a result, take a look at the charting songs and albums on iTunes right now.  On the Top 10 Rock charts Fleetwood Mac's 1988 Greatest Hits album is the #2 Rock Album.  Rumours is #3 and The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac is #6.  In Ireland, Greatest Hits is #2 with The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac at #4. Fascinating!

In other parts of the world Greatest Hits is #3 in Spain and #9 in Australia.

On the iTunes Top 100 Charts, the lists below reveal a little more of the impact a couple of airings of a documentary can make on album and song sales.

iTunes Top 100 Rock Songs - UK
#12 - Go Your Own Way (Rumours)
#30 - The Chain
#39 - Everywhere
#42 - Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks
#44 - Little Lies
#45 - Oh Well, pts. 1&2 - Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac
#49 - Man of the World - Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac
#51 - Go Your Own Way (Greatest Hits)
#54 - Dreams
#58 - Landslide
#87 - Rhiannon

iTunes Top 100 overall Albums - UK
#31 - Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits
#35 - Fleetwood Mac Rumours
#40 - The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac

iTunes Top 100 overall Albums - Ireland
#22 - Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits
#30 - The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac
#76 - Fleetwood Mac Rumours

US ALBUM SALES
Week ending April 29th - Billboard Chart Date May 12th
In The USA this past week... Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and Greatest Hits are still registering on the Top 200 Catalogue Album sales chart with pretty much static numbers in terms of sales both only dropping slightly by 2% vs last week.  Both albums increase in their chart positions as other titles on the chart have greater declines.  Rumours moves from #134 to #117 with sales of 1,824 units for the week, down from 1,864 last week.  Total album sales in the US since 1991 are 2,952,152.  Greatest Hits moves from#188 to #165 on sales of 1,489 units vs 1,519 last week.  Total US sales since 1991 are 4,543,494.  On the Top Catalogue Digital Albums Chart, Rumours moves from #51 to #21 on sales of 1,260 vs 1,208 last week.  Greatest Hits moves from #132 to #104 on sales of 687 digital downloads vs 702 last week.

Two catalogue tracks strike gains in sales this week on the Top 200 sales list.  Fleetwood Mac's Landslide moves from #155 to #95 on sales of 5,883 single downloads vs 4,512 the previous week.  Stevie's Edge of Seventeen moves down the chart even though sales increased this past week.  The tune moves to #180 from #127 last week.  Sales were 4,505 vs 2,694 the previous week.  Total digital sales for Landslide are 862,143 and the total for Edge of Seventeen are 505,673 - which means last week Edge surpassed the 500k mark in digital sales making it eligible for Gold status (not sure if the RIAA awards catalogue tunes Gold awards if they sell past the 500k mark).  In any case, the song didn't chart last week because of it's lower sales even though it's listed as being #127 last week.

Top Catalogue Albums Chart:
# 117 (134) Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
# 165 (188) Fleetwood Mac - Greatest Hits

Top Catalogue Digital Albums Chart:
# 21   (51)   Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
# 104 (132) Fleetwood Mac - Greatest Hits

Top Digital Tracks Catalogue
# 95 (155)  Fleetwood Mac - Landslide
#180 (127) Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen

Videos & Setlist: Lindsey Buckingham - The Wiltern May 4, 2012

Three most amazing things happened at The Wiltern last night during Lindsey Buckinghams approach to a stripped down live show... First he came out without wearing his customary leather jacket looking pretty crisp in a black blazer...

Second, he played the beautiful Buckingham Nicks instrumental tune "Stephanie" from the 1973 Buckingham Nicks album!! As far as I'm concerned, this would be worth the price of admission alone to hear this song live!!  Could this be the lead up for bigger things to come for Buckingham Nicks?  2013 will be the albums 40th Anniversary, if you can believe that... Might be the perfect time to consider doing something with a re-release.  There were rumblings that he played the song opening night at The Belly Up but I couldn't find a reliable source to confirm it or video proof...

Third, right after "Stephanie" Lindsey played a new song, I think its called "Poor Little Raven" called "Dancing" he also played at The Belly Up May 3rd.  It's apparently a song that's been floating around awhile, but just never recorded.

From what I've read, it sounds like it was an incredible night of music... Lindsey's managing to pull off these Solo Acoustic gigs really well, his first attempt at going it alone - something he's said he's wanted to try for some time. They aren't as acoustic as I thought they were going to be, but for the most part they are. Lindsey also brought along his family and dedicated Not To Late to his 3 children.

Thanks to J.Melson for sending in The Belly Up setlist!!  Obviously some changes were made last minute as "Down on Rodeo" was replaced with "Trouble" during the Encore... and what is #4 "Dancing" and the second to last tune "Everyone"?  Is #4 "Slow Dancing" and is "Everyone" supposed to be "Thats All For Everyone" from Tusk?
