Fleetwood Mac Returns to No. 1

Fleetwood Mac Charts A No. 1 Single In America — In The Year 2025

Forbes

“Dreams” has remained one of Fleetwood Mac’s biggest hits ever since it was first released in the spring of 1977. The tune arrived just before the group’s iconic album Rumours, which followed about a month later.

Both “Dreams” and Rumours hit No. 1 on their respective charts, and in the decades since, they’ve remained hugely successful commercially. This week is especially notable for “Dreams,” as the nearly half-century-old cut rises across every major ranking.

Fleetwood Mac Returns to No. 1

Fleetwood Mac is once again in control of the Rock Streaming Songs chart, Billboard’s ranking of the most successful individual rock tracks on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and iHeartRadio in the U.S. “Dreams” steps up from No. 2 to No. 1, replacing “Back to Friends” by newcomer Sombr.

A Resurgence That Started in 2020

“Dreams” first conquered the Rock Streaming Songs chart almost half a decade ago. The track debuted on the list in February 2020 and climbed to the summit in October of that year. Including that period, “Dreams” has now led the tally for nine nonconsecutive stretches.

Over the past five-plus years, “Dreams” has spent 287 weeks somewhere on the Rock Streaming Songs ranking. That easily makes it the band’s longest-running win. In fact, its tenure outpaces both “The Chain” and “Landslide,” which have collectively managed just 91 frames on the same list.

A Strong Performance Across Multiple Rankings

Fleetwood Mac sees “Dreams” climb on all four Billboard tallies where it currently appears in the U.S. It’s even performing well enough to rise on the all-genre Streaming Songs chart, where it jumps from No. 38 to No. 29. The smash becomes a top 40 hit again on the Billboard Global 200 again, narrowly jumping into that region as it lands at No. 40. At the same time, it pushes to No. 106 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S.

Fleetwood Mac is lucky to have one track that’s still popular enough after decades to appear on the Rock Streaming Songs ranking, which is a relatively uncommon feat for any legacy act – but that’s not the end of the story. The group also claims a second spot on the same list, as “The Chain” dips from No. 17 to No. 23.

Fleetwood Mac’s Back On The Rise

Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 album, Rumours, surges due to streaming en-couraged by TikTok and July 4 (when classic rock typically performs well). On the former, creators TerryAndKani-yia posted a video on July 1 reacting to “The Chain,” which netted 29 million global views on TikTok through July 13. On the Billboard 200,Rumours rises 24-14. The set scores its best streaming week — 26.6 million on-demand official streams for its songs July 4-10 — since the Oct. 24, 2020 -dated charts, when the tracks tallied 30.6 million, spurred by a viral clip of user Nathan Apodaca skateboarding to the set’s “Dreams.”

Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’ Rocks To A New Chart Peak

July 20, 2025
Forbes

No matter how many greatest hits compilations or box sets Fleetwood Mac releases, Rumours will always be the focus for millions of listeners around the world. It remains one of the most successful albums of all time, and it’s still very much alive on the charts.

The full-length sounds almost like a singles compilation, as many of the group's most famous tunes are featured on its tracklist. Decades after its release, Rumours remains a bestseller and powerful streamer in the United States, and plays on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, and others help the Grammy-winning set soar higher than ever this week.

Rumours jumps on the Top Streaming Albums chart this week, rocketing from No. 31 to No. 17 on Billboard's ranking of the most successful projects on major streaming platforms. That position marks a new peak for the full-length and for the band, as Rumours is, so far, the only release by Fleetwood Mac to reach the Top Streaming Albums chart. That means every time it lifts to a never-before-seen position, the group raises the bar again.

Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours Vs. Greatest Hits

Rumours first reached the Top Streaming Albums chart in October 2023, many decades after it was originally released. Billboard didn’t introduce the tally until several years ago, and so far, Fleetwood Mac’s classic has now spent 41 frames somewhere on the ranking.

Somewhat surprisingly, the group’s Greatest Hits has never reached the Top Streaming Albums list, as American fans apparently prefer to press play on the original album itself.

Two Fleetwood Mac Songs Help Power Rumours

Two Fleetwood Mac singles appear on Billboard's streaming rankings, and an increase in plays of those cuts may have played a major role in sending Rumours higher on the Top Streaming Albums tally.

"Dreams" climbs to No. 22 on the Streaming Songs chart, lifting from No. 31. At the same time, it holds in the runner-up spot on the Rock Streaming Songs list.

Fleetwood Mac doubles up on the ranking of the most-streamed rock tracks in America as "The Chain" reenters that tally at No. 17.

Rumours Is a Hit on Multiple Billboard Charts

Rumours lives on half a dozen Billboard charts this week, climbing on all of them — though it only reaches a new peak on the Top Streaming Albums tally. The bestselling set sits inside the top 10 on half of those rosters and occupies space within the top 20 on the other three.

Fleetwood Mac Rumours and Greatest Hits this week on the Billboard Charts

Fleetwood Mac Charts A Top 10 Hit In America Once Again
Hugh McIntyre

Fleetwood Mac can always be found on several Billboard charts. Every week, the band appears on a number of lists of the bestselling and top-performing albums in the country. This time around, in addition to their successful full-lengths, one of the group’s most popular songs is present on one tally…and it’s given them a big hit once again.

“Dreams” rises one rung on the Rock Streaming Songs chart this week. The tune now sits at No. 10 on Billboard’s list of the most-streamed cuts in the U.S. that can be classified as “rock” when it comes to genre.

It’s not odd for a legacy act to see their most successful albums and compilations find space on the Billboard charts…but the same can’t be said for songs. Typically, singles have a shorter shelf life in the U.S. than full-lengths. While it’s not unheard of for a decades-old track to continue to chart, it’s also not common.

“Dreams” has thus far spent 228 weeks on the Rock Streaming Songs chart. The tune once climbed all the way to No. 1 in late 2020, when it went viral and became a smash all over again.

So far, “Dreams” stands as Fleetwood Mac’s only No. 1 on the streaming chart that focuses solely on rock. It’s one of the band’s two top 10s, as “The Chain” peaked at No. 5. Despite having a catalog filled with beloved titles, the band has only sent a trio of tunes to this roster. “Landslide” fills out their three wins, as it previously topped out at No. 14.

This week, “Dreams” is the only new entrant inside the top 10 on the Rock Streaming Songs chart. The other nine tracks that appear within the highest tier on the tally were already present in the region last frame, though there is some movement among the hits.

This week, Fleetwood Mac also appears on at least six other Billboard charts. The band’s masterpiece Rumours is falling on every list it carves out space on, though it’s not down by much on any of them. Their Greatest Hits compilation can also be found on several rosters, though not as many as Rumours.

Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' Among Best Selling UK Vinyl Albums of 2020

Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' expected to be announced as one of the year’s best selling vinyl albums in the UK.

Nearly 5 million (4.8m) LPs were purchased in the UK over the past 12 months – a leap of nearly a tenth on sales in 2019 and a 13th consecutive year of growth since 2007.  Vinyl LPs now account for nearly 1 in 5 of all albums purchased (18%) and are at their highest level since the early nineties. Vinyl generates almost twice as much in industry revenues as music video streaming platforms, such as YouTube, despite the tens of billions of videos watched every year.

The BPI will report its final music consumption figures on January 4th 2021.

Predicted best-selling vinyl albums for 2020 (Based on YTD Official Charts data)

1. Fleetwood Mac – Rumours
2. Oasis – (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?
3. Amy Winehouse – Back To Black
4. Nirvana – Nevermind
5. Harry Styles – Fine Line
6. Kylie Minogue – Disco
7. AC/DC – Power Up
8. Queen – Greatest Hits
9. IDLES – Ultra Mono
10. Arctic Monkeys – Live At The Royal Albert Hall

Fleetwood Mac's Rumours Is Once Again a Top 10 Album in the US

Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' Returns to Billboard 200 Top 10 -- 42 Years Later

by Keith Caulfield
Billboard

After a 42-year wait, Fleetwood Mac’s former Billboard 200 No. 1 album Rumours returns to the top 10 this week, as the set jumps 13-7. The album, released in 1977, is basking in the glow of sales and streaming increases spurred on by publicity generated from a viral TikTok video set to the album’s song “Dreams.”

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Oct. 24-dated chart (where Rumours returns to the top 10) will be posted in full on Billboard's website on Oct. 20. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

Rumours earned 33,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Oct. 15 – up 15%, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. Of that sum, 23,000 comprise SEA units (up 15%, equating to 30.6 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs, including "Dreams"), a little under 7,000 are in album sales (up 15%) and 4,000 are in TEA units (up 13%).

The TikTok video in question has “Dreams” soundtracking a man in a hoodie (Nathan Apodaca) seemingly being pulled on a skateboard, as he drinks from a bottle of Ocean Spray Cran-Raspberry juice and sings along with Stevie Nicks’ lead vocal. The video became so popular, it moved the band’s own Mick Fleetwood and Nicks to create their own tribute clips.

Rumours spent 31 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 1977-78 – a record number of weeks atop the list for an album by a duo or group. Rumours was last in the top 10 on the Feb. 18, 1978-dated chart (at No. 10), and last ranked at No. 7 or higher on the Feb. 11, 1978 chart (where it placed at No. 7).

“Dreams” is Fleetwood Mac’s only No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart – out of 25 chart hits. “Dreams” spent one week at No. 1 on June 18, 1977. The cut is one of four top 10 hits from the Rumours album. The effort also launched the singles “Go Your Own Way” (No. 10), “Don’t Stop” (No. 3) and “You Make Loving Fun” (No. 9).

Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' and 'Dreams' explode on the Billboard Charts!

Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' is the "greatest gainer" this week on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart as it explodes in sales and jumps up the Top 200 albums chart to #13 from #27 last week as a result of Nathan Apodaca’s viral TikTok video featuring 'Dreams'.  I believe the last time the album was this high on the charts was back in May, 2011 when the entire 'Rumours' album was featured in the Glee episode and it reached #11.

The 1988 Greatest Hits release also sees a major boost on the chart, jumping up to #61 this week from #103 last week.

DREAMS ROCKETS UP THE BILLBOARD HOT 100

'Dreams' re-enters the Billboard Top 100 singles chart at #21 this week based on sales, streams and radio play. The song took off following Nathan Apodaca’s viral TikTok video flying up the iTunes and Spotify song charts. The song is currently No.1 on iTunes in the US and has been for a number of days.  This is the first time the song has been on the Hot 100 since August, 1977!

Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours,’ Named to Library of Congress’ Registry

The Library of Congress announced on Wednesday that it will preserve the recordings of 25 additional artists and personalities in the National Recording Registry, including Fleetwood Mac's 1977 album "Rumours".

Under the terms of the National Recording Preservation Act of 2000, the Librarian, with advice from the Library’s National Recording Preservation Board (NRPB), is tasked with annually selecting 25 titles that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and are at least 10 years old.

Full list at Variety.com

“Rumours,” (album), Fleetwood Mac (1977)
Stevie Nicks said: “Devastation leads to writing good things.” It’s little wonder, then, that Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” is so highly regarded, having been forged by the crumbling relationships of every member of the group. In 1974, the then-remaining members of Fleetwood Mac—drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie and his wife, vocalist and keyboard player Christine McVie—found themselves without a male vocalist or guitarist. A chance meeting at a recording studio led to guitarist and vocalist Lindsey Buckingham and vocalist Stevie Nicks, who were romantically involved, joining the group. The newly formed Anglo-American lineup soon struck gold with their eponymous 1975 album. They should have been on top of the world, but as they began working on their follow-up album, “Rumours,” relationships became so strained that, except as musically necessary, they would barely speak to each other while playing songs about each other. However, because the group had a sense that the songs were so strong, they not only endured, they prevailed. As engineer and co-producer Richard Dashut put it, they wanted to “ … make sure that every song on [“Rumours”] was worth its weight in gold.”
