Fleetwood Mac The Dance (1997)

Fleetwood Mac’s classic lineup—Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks, and Lindsey Buckingham—reunited for The Dance, released August 19, 1997. Recorded in one night (May 23, 1997) at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank for an MTV special, the performance marked their first album together since 1987’s Tango in the Night and became the band’s first U.S. No. 1 since Mirage (1982). Debuting atop the Billboard 200 with 199,000 first-week sales, The Dance spent 7+ months in the Top 40, moved 1 million units in eight weeks, and has surpassed six million worldwide. The companion home video (later DVD) added favorites not on the CD and features the USC Trojan Marching Band on “Tusk” and “Don’t Stop.”

A live celebration with surprises, The Dance also introduced new material from each principal writer (“Temporary One,” “My Little Demon,” “Sweet Girl,” “Bleed to Love Her”) alongside definitive takes on “The Chain,” “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way,” and more. Christine McVie would depart the following year (returning to tour in 2014). The project yielded U.S. singles “Silver Springs,” “The Chain,” and “Landslide,” three Grammy nominations, and a 44-date North American tour. The title nods to Matisse’s Dance; the David LaChapelle cover echoes Rumours and the white Fleetwood Mac album iconography (Mick’s pose; Lindsey’s cane).
