Stevie Nicks: Sound City’s glory days are lived again

Live Review: Dave Grohl’s Sound City Players at LA’s Palladium (1/31)
BY CARL POCKET
Consequence of Sound

In a city where movies premiere every night and streets flood with stars, there was only one place to be Thursday evening in Hollywood: The Palladium. Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl not only premiered his much-hyped Sound City documentary, but also strung together the studio’s regulars for a rock ‘n’ roll history lesson on stage shortly after.

Video / Review: Stevie Nicks - Sound City Movie L.A. Premiere and Live Gig

Sound City Movie L.A. Premiere and Live Gig

The Sound City Movie made it's official debut in theatres around the world last night (January 31st) and on-line... If you pre-ordered the flick through the Sound City website, the download and streaming of the movie became available last night.  If you haven't watched it... You should!  Really well put together documentary on the famous studio and its console (Congratulations Mr. Grohl!).  Tons of Rock Stars in the feature with Stevie, Lindsey, Mick and Keith Olsen featured quite heavily in interview segments. Stevie has a great segment where she's shown recording her new song "You Can't Fix This" which sounds really great!  She even reads a letter (on Sound City stationery) she wrote to her family while she and Lindsey were in the studio recording Buckingham Nicks.

Plus there are a lot of really great photos of early Buckingham Nicks and early Fleetwood Mac in the studio.
Little known fact:
Buckingham Nicks' "Crying In The Night" was the first ever track
recorded on the Neve console at Sound City.

Anyway, if you like music, and or listening to stories on how some of the really great music of our time was made... Check out the movie, you'll enjoy it!  Buy and download from Sound City direct, or look for it in a theatre near you using the threatre listing at the Sound City website.  The DVD and Sound Track will both be released March 12th.

After the LA premiere at ArcLight Cinemas Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, The Palladium rocked for a further 3 1/2 hours with many in the film playing live to a sold out crowd.

The gig followed the LA premiere of Dave Grohl's Sound City documentary

Stevie Nicks was the final guest musician, performing 'Stop Draggin' My Heart Around', with Grohl filling in Tom Petty's role. She sang new song 'You Can't Fix This', from the soundtrack, which she told the crowd was about her late 18-year-old godson, who last year died of an overdose at a frat party. "In our day, we made a pact not to dance with the devil," she explained before the intense, gothic track.

Nicks also sang Fleetwood Mac's 'Dreams' and 'Landslide'. The evening came to a close with a heavy, nearly 10 minute long version of 'Rumours' track 'Gold Dust Woman'.

Q&A: Dave Grohl on His 'Sound City' Doc. Stevie Nicks on board for NYC Show

The Sound City Players are scheduled to play their next show in Los Angeles on January 31st, with other dates "coming soon in cool places," Grohl says. "The musicians have all really jumped on after the [Park City] show. I didn't know if Stevie [Nicks] was gonna be able to do New York, and after we did this she was like, 'I'm doing New York." Grohl says he'll keep crossing his fingers for an appearance from Paul McCartney.

The movie debuts in theatres across North America beginning January 31st.  Check Soundcitymovie.com for a theatre in your city to see the documentary (includes Lindsey, Stevie and Mick)... It's basically a one night only event.

"Tonight, I've got Lindsey Buckingham's girlfriend," said Grohl when Introducing Stevie Nicks

Dave Grohl's Sound City Players Debut at Sundance Film Festival
Spin.com

And then Stevie. Oh, Stevie. As cooky as you are with your sunglasses on inside of this low-lit venue on this blackest of ice-kissed nights, your voice is heart-melting mana. Grohl agreed. Before she came out, he explained her Sound City story, in which Mick Fleetwood asks the studio boss for Lindsey Buckingham's info so he can offer him a place in the Mac, and the boss explains that he'll have to let LB's GF in the band as well. "Tonight, I've got Lindsey Buckingham's girlfriend," said Grohl before trading lines with her on "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." Her bewitching quaver brought the room up a few degrees — we noted at least two coat removals during their insanely smooth rendition of "Dreams" — and though the darkly droning Johannes-assisted version of "Gold Dust Woman" was a triumph, the show's greatest moment came just before that resonant close. Suddenly the 12 people onstage became two, and Grohl picked up the night's first acoustic guitar to accompany Nicks on her first big hit, Fleetwood Mac's wistful, weather-appropriate "Landslide." Their duet nearly silenced the rowdy crowd, now four hours deep into their drinks, and even inspired the bathroom attendant to abandon his post and film with his phone. The lines about getting older could've felt literal, but Grohl's era-spanning musical circus of badassery and general excellence made the point that good music: a) is timeless, b) defies genre, and c) is always waiting in the wings — as each of his headliners were at one point or another — for fresh context and a new crowd. Concert Review: Dave Grohl's 'Sound City' Players at Sundance with Stevie Nicks

by David Burger at Salt Lake Tribune

No fewer than 38 different songs were performed during the concert, in which Dave Grohl was the only musician to be onstage for each one of those 38.

It was the rare concert that only got better the longer it went on, with a set by John Fogerty and then a set from Stevie Nicks closing the show (with Foo Fighters backing them up as primarily the house band for the evening, with several line-up changes).

Stevie's Setlist:
  • Stop Draggin My Heart Around
  • You Can't Fix This (New song from the movie soundtrack)
  • Dreams
  • Landslide
  • Gold Dust Woman
The finale came when Steve Nicks came onstage, with one of the strongest connections to the Los Angeles studio that Grohl has immortalized in his film. (She and Lindsey Buckingham recored as a duo at the studio before they joined Fleetwood Mac, whose "Rumours" was recorded at the studio.) Along with a new song destined for the "Sound City" soundtrack, she sang breath-taking versions of "Gold Dust Woman" (which closed the night, with 11 musicians on stage) and "Dreams," both off of the landmark album "Rumours." But best of all was when all of the other musicians except for Grohl left the stage, and he accompanied her on acoustic guitar as she sang "Landslide." Everyone in the audience who has an iPhone captured the performance (and it seemed as if every audience member owned the smart phone).

Besides being a party to celebrate the film, the night underscored the message of the film: that people making music with other people (as opposed to making music on a computer) is the only way to create magic, and there was magic throughout the evening.

RollingStone Review
Dave Grohl Debuts Supergroup at 'Sound City' Sundance Premiere
Director takes the stage with Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty and other musicians featured in his studio documentary

MTV.Com Review

Did Dave Grohl Put On The Greatest Sundance Show Ever?
The Foo Fighters joined former members of Nirvana and Stevie Nicks for an epic Sound City Players performance in Park City, UT.

The crowd played favorites for the final performer of the night: Stevie Nicks. Introduced by Grohl as the "Queen of Rock and Roll," the Fleetwood Mac star was greeted by a sea of camera flashes and a new surge from the crowd. Nicks debuted a new song from the "Sound City" soundtrack about the death of her godson, a stalwart, octave-driven anthem called "You Can't Fix This." Nicks and the Foos then launched into a set of Fleetwood Mac hits, with Nicks bringing the night full circle by going back to her roots, citing "Landslide" as the song that made her the songwriter and performer that she is today.

See Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood on the big screen beginning January 31st.

"... Sound City is a film about American's Greatest unsung-recording studio. Deep in California's Sun Burnt San Fernando Valley, tucked away behind the train tracks and dilapidated warehouses, it was the birthplace of legend.  It was witness to history, it was home to a special few, intent on preserving an ideal. An analog church, a time capsule.  The last bastion of a craft defied by technology. It was Rock and Roll hallowed ground. And it was our best keep secret.  Sound City is a film about the truth, the craft, and the integrity of Rock and Roll." - Dave Grohl
