Stevie Nicks on PBS Tonight. "The Ultimate Buddy Party" begins airing

Published by: @Nickslive of Fleetwood Mac News and Reviews

"Buddy Holly The Ultimate Buddy Party" Premieres Tonight on PBS in both the US and Canada.

PBS will premiere “Buddy Holly: Listen To Me/The Ultimate Buddy Party” tonight with performances of his songs by Stevie Nicks, Chris Isaak, Lyle Lovett, Graham Nash, Raul Malo, Paul Anka, Boz Scaggs and several others at a 75th birthday concert that was filmed in Hollywood in September.

Stevie Nicks and some of her band members, Waddy Wachtel, Sharon Celani and Lori Nicks perform "Not Fade Away" plus she also performed "It's So Easy" this night although I'm not sure if "It's So Easy" is included on the show.. I hope it is.

SHOW TIMES:
The Listen To Me: Buddy Holly website have compiled a list of ALL PBS stations that will be airing the show and when... There are a lot of opportunities during the month of December to catch the show... Click through to the Listen To Me: Buddy Holly site and up top is the link to the schedule.  It's a pdf file.

THE DVD:
The DVD of this program should also be made available during the broadcast.  It looks like it's an exclusive with PBS and not sold in stores yet.

[Update]

Okay... Saw this last night (Dec 3rd) What a great show and Stevie was really great!!  She sang both "Not Fade Away" plus the Linda Ronstadt tune "It's So Easy". She sounded so good on both! She should do "Not Fade Away" in concert, it's a fun song!

If you are planning on catching this on PBS be warned that Stevie sings "Not Fade Away" right at the beginning of the program, so you won't want to miss the beginning.  It's pledge drive month at PBS so the show was interrupted by PBS announcers asking for contributions.  Part of the deal is with a large enough contribution, the DVD can be yours. Stevie's "It's So Easy" came on about 35 minutes into the program that I saw - but this may vary depending on the market.  In any case.. both songs were great, Stevie looked great, Waddy, Sharon and Lori were with her on Stage... Lori, Sharon and Waddy were on stage practically all night playing.  And I saw her Neice Jessica in the audience when the camera was panning around.

Review: Buddy Holly tribute concert a star-studded bash with Stevie Nicks

HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. — For a 75th birthday bash, it was a pretty loud affair.

More than a dozen singers and musicians — from icons like Stevie Nicks and Graham Nash to upstarts like Patrick Stump and members of Cobra Starship — gathered at Hollywood Boulevard's Music Box Theater on Wednesday to pay tribute to the music of Buddy Holly on what would have been the late rock great's birthday (which was officially proclaimed Buddy Holly day in L.A.).

"We'd like to make tonight's concert a serious rock ’n’ roll party," explained co-host and musical director Peter Asher by way of introduction. The former member of Peter and Gordon — who had a hit with Holly's True Love Ways back in the ’60s — is the man behind the related new tribute CD Listen to Me, whose set list and performers formed the backbone of the three-hour event.

That's right, it lasted three hours. More precisely, it took three hours. The event was also being filmed for an upcoming PBS special, and as anyone who's watched TV production can attest, it can be a fairly tedious and repetitive endeavor replete with glitches, retakes, delays and general silliness (including, on this occasion, a bizarre debate over whether attendees would be allowed to eat cupcakes at their tables — don't ask).

Between all the hurry-up-and-wait, though, several hundred invited guests — including Holly's widow Maria Elena, old pal Phil Everly, a handful of celebrites like Priscilla Presley and Nigel Lythgoe, plenty of musicians and industry types, and a few reporters like yours truly — were slowly but surely treated to a 20-song set of Holly classics. Here's a quick (and hopefully technical difficulty-free) rundown:

Stevie Nicks | Not Fade Away

It's the first song on the Listen to Me CD. It's a bona fide Buddy gem. And Nicks is arguably the biggest star on the roster. So opening with it is a no-brainer. Fleetwood's Mac's gypsy queen is her usual witchy self, clad head to toe in black and sporting aviator shades. The song itself isn't messed with too much — it still bops to the trademark Bo Diddley beat, pounded out by an all-star house band fronted by corkscrew-haired guitar slinger Waddy Wachtel and anchored by the veteran rhythm section of drummer Russ Kunkel and bassist Leland Sklar. No complaints there.

Stevie Nicks | It's So Easy

Nicks returns for a second go-round — and makes it look easy with this cowbell-rocking version of It's So Easy. "I totally miss him," she says of Holly. Awww. After her tune, Isaak cracks: "Stevie Nicks — remember that name. You're going to be hearing a lot from that girl."

HOLLYWOOD, CA - SEPTEMBER 07: Musician Stevie Nicks performs onstage during a concert in celebration of Buddy Holly's music and legacy held at The Music Box Theatre on September 7, 2011 in Hollywood, California.

An eclectic collection of artists that included Stevie Nicks, members of Cobra Starship, Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump Chris Isaak and Paul Anka saluted Buddy Holly Wednesday on what would have been his 75th birthday in, appropriately enough, Hollywood.

Guitarist Waddy Wachtel led a seven piece band -- with an occasional string trio --that featured bassist Leland Sklar and drummer Russ Kunkel, musicians featured on countless Asher-produced albums in the '70s. Artists spoke often about the eloquence of Holly's lyrics and the fact that his ordinary appearance and demeanor was an inspiration to so many; "we felt like we lost a friend when he passed," Graham Nash offered. ""In two, two and a half minutes, he taught you everything you need to know about life and love," was Lyle Lovett's comment.

Stevie Nicks - "Not Fade Away"
Lyle Lovett - "Well … All Right"
Lyle Lovett w/ James Burton - "I'm Looking for Someone to Love"
Shawn Colvin - "Learning the Game"
Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy - "Everyday," "Oh Boy"
Chris Isaak - "Crying, Waiting, Hoping"
Michelle Branch w/Graham Nash - "Words of Love"
Graham Nash - "Raining in My Heart"
Graham Nash & Peter Asher - "Take Your Time"
Boz Scaggs - "Maybe Baby"

Paul Anka - "I Guess It Doesn't Matter Anymore"
Stevie Nicks - "It's So Easy"

COLLECTION FEATURES MODERN TAKES ON HOLLY’S CLASSIC HITS PERFORMED BY RINGO STARR, STEVIE NICKS, THE FRAY, IMELDA MAY, ZOOEY DESCHANEL, JACKSON BROWNE, NATALIE MERCHANT, JEFF LYNNE, BRIAN WILSON AND MORE

STAR-STUDDED NEW ALBUM EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY PETER ASHER

LISTEN TO ME: BUDDY HOLLY ARRIVES VIA VERVE/ FORECAST IN US AND eOne MUSIC CANADA ON SEPTEMBER 6, 2011

(New York, NY) Songmasters announces the upcoming release of Listen To Me: Buddy Holly, an extraordinary new collection featuring contemporary takes on songs originally written and performed by the late, great Buddy Holly. The album – presented as part of Songmasters’ innovative Listen To Me: Buddy Holly multi-media campaign – arrives in stores and at all digital retailers via Verve/Forecast Records in the US and in eOne Music Canada on September 6, 2011. International release follows.

Listen To Me: Buddy Holly features a remarkable line-up of artists paying tribute to the iconic work of an artist many consider to be the first true “singer/songwriter” performer of the rock ‘n’ roll era. Among those contributing brand-new recordings to the collection are Stevie Nicks, Patrick Stump, Jeff Lynne, Natalie Merchant, Imelda May, Lyle Lovett, Jackson Browne, The Fray, Cobra Starship, Brian Wilson, Chris Isaak, Pat Monahan (of Train), Zooey Deschanel, Eric Idle, and the one and only Ringo Starr. The album will include the incomparable version of “That’ll Be The Day” recorded originally by Linda Ronstadt and produced by Asher. Never bested, this track remains, according to Asher, the most outstanding version of that Holly classic available.

“We are trying to keep Buddy Holly’s name alive so younger generations can appreciate it the way I do,” says Brian Wilson. “Buddy is unique. He matters because his music is timeless.”

Listen To Me: Buddy Holly is Executive Produced by multiple GRAMMY Award-winning producer/artist/manager/executive Peter Asher, whose own personal connection to Holly’s music goes back to 1965, when Peter & Gordon’s timeless cover of “True Love Ways” proved a massive hit both here and in the U.K. In addition, Asher produced Linda Ronstadt’s smash renditions of “It’s So Easy” and “That’ll Be The Day,” both of which served to further bolster the amazing durability of Holly’s legacy.

“Buddy showed us how brilliant and unforgettable songs could be written using the simplest of chords,” says Asher. “He taught us the value of a lyric which came from the heart and the importance of making records the way you heard them in your head. His music has never ceased to play a major role in my life and work.”

Boasting a line-up hailed by Holly’s widow, Maria Elena, as “fantastic,” Listen To Me: Buddy Holly stands tall among the many tribute albums devoted to Holly’s work. These exceptional interpretations, produced by Asher and performed by artists whose own noteworthy careers span three generations of post-Buddy rock ‘n’ roll, create an innovative collection of “modern authentics” that showcase the versatility, range, and across-the-board appeal of Buddy’s music.

“Nothing that’s happened since [the beginning of rock] can really obscure the power and influence of Buddy’s original records and his contribution to music,” declared Jackson Browne in his studio session for the album. “Things that are immortal have a way of continuing to be born in the world.”

Ringo Starr (who contributes a delightful take on “Think It Over” to the album) put it plainly: “In the whole of rock ‘n’ roll history, he’s in the top 10!”

The Listen To Me: Buddy Holly campaign celebrates what would have been Holly’s 75th birthday by honoring his brief but brilliant life and career through an astonishing range of events, recordings, and charitable programs over the next year. September 7th – Holly’s birthday – will see the long awaited unveiling of Holly’s much-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame – a permanent public monument to a genuinely noteworthy artist. Peter Asher will be among the featured speakers at the event, which will be hosted by the owners and publishers of Holly’s catalog.

Ultimate Buddy Party Invite Only V.I.P. Concert Event at The Music Box Theatre - September 7, 2011.  Event to be Filmed For Broadcast

That evening, a number of the stars featured on Listen To Me: Buddy Holly – along with special surprise guest artists and friends and family from Holly’s too-brief life – will team up for Songmasters’ “Ultimate Buddy Party,” an invitation-only V.I.P. concert event to be held at The Music Box in Hollywood. Asher will serve as the evening’s musical supervisor, with the performers backed by a stellar house band led by renowned session guitarist, Waddy Wachtel. The concert event will be shot live in HD for broadcast starting with PBS’ December 2011 pledge drive, followed by a deluxe DVD/CD release. Further details will be announced prior to that release.

STEVIE NICKS SINGS "NOT FADE AWAY" ON UPCOMING BUDDY HOLLY TRIBUTE ALBUM

Music Biz Vet, Ex-Apple Records Exec Peter Asher: The Long Wait for Beatles on iTunes Was 'Silly' Peter Asher: A Musical Memoir of the 60s and Beyond is a multimedia experience that mixes video clips, photos and storytelling from Asher’s illustrious history. It’s scheduled for three inaugural performances, the first this Friday at New York City’s Iridium, the next on Sunday, Dec. 5 at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano and at L.A.'s Grammy Museum on Dec. 7, after which Asher will continue onto another of his passion projects: a tribute to Buddy Holly featuring reinterpretations of classic songs by the likes of Jackson Browne ('True Love Ways'), Jeff Lynne ('Words of Love'), Stevie Nicks ('Not Fade Away'), Cobra Starship (“Peggy Sue”) and Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump (“Everyday”). "

Buddy Holly "Not Fade Away"

THR: You’re equally passionate about the music of Buddy Holly. Tell us about the tribute album you’re putting together.
Asher: I am a huge fan. Buddy Holly was one of the things that brought Gordon and I together at school, back in the very formation of Peter and Gordon. I was more of a folkie, Gordon was more of a rocker and he pretty much taught me about Buddy Holly. Those songs always meant a lot to me, so when I was approached to take on the production of a Buddy Holly tribute for the 50th anniversary of his death, I was happy to do so. We've done seven tracks so far: Stevie Nicks, Lyle Lovett, Jeff Lynne who produced his own version of “Words of Love,” which is brilliant, The Fray, Chris Isaac .... Who have I left out?

THR: Cobra Starship, featuring your daughter Victoria on keytar!
Asher: Yes, they did "Peggy Sue." It was great was fun working with them in the studio and it's a cool version, if I do say so myself. The amazing thing about Buddy Holly was that he was a brilliant record producer as well as a great songwriter. A lot of his records were very unconventional -- the drum parts, weird percussion like using a cardboard box, all that kind of tippy-tappy stuff he did … quite spare, but also very imaginative, cool stuff. So we tried to apply some of that philosophy.

THR: And you’re producing every track?
Asher: So far, the only one I didn't do is Jeff Lynne because he does all his stuff in his own studio, his own way. So I was happy spectator and visitor, but everything else has been tracked in L.A. at Conway Studios.

THR: When do you hope to have it out and who will release it?
Asher: I'd like to see it come out in late spring. It may be a direct-to-retail deal, it’s still a bit up in the air.

STEVIE DOES BUDDY
Oh... And Stevie Nicks is apparently working on a track for a Buddy Holly tribute album being put together by Peter Asher to mark the 50th anniversary of his death in February, 1959. (It'll be 51 years this February... Better get crackin'!)

The quote from the article:

“I’m in the studio producing a Buddy Holly tribute album for the 50th anniversary of his death,” he says of his current project. “For the last couple of days, I’ve been in the studio with Stevie Nicks doing a track with her.”

Asher seems so nonchalant about recording with Nicks that he may as well by talking about picking up his dry cleaning, but it’s just another testament to how many music legends he knows on a first-name basis.
