INTERVIEW: Stevie Nicks tells-all about joining #AmericanHorrorStory #FleetwoodMac

LEGENDARY singer and songwriter Stevie Nicks called into Naughty But Nice Rob to talk EXCLUSIVELY about her much anticipated appearance on tomorrow’s episode of American Horror Story: Coven! See what she had to say below:

by Naughty But Nice Ricky

Hello Stevie! Tell us about Stevie Nicks on AHS: Coven!
“I haven’t seen it yet! I’m going to be on stage in Vegas when it comes on. I’m flying from Phoenix to Vegas for the last Fleetwood Mac show, then flying back to Phoenix. It will be 2 in the morning before I watch it. But I like to see the show the day it goes out in the world. I want to see it with everyone else. I still want to see it that night.  I feel the same way about my music. The first time it goes out is when the public hears it, it’s a spiritual experience with the people.”

Well, we are beyond ecstatic to hear that you are joining the cast of AHS: Coven. What was it like joining the cast?
“Incredible! I didn’t meet Angela (Bassett) or Sarah (Paulson) but I did get to meet Kathy (Bates) on second day. I flew back with Kathy and got to spend more real 1 on 1 time . We flew from New Orleans to LA way after midnight, which was a 5 hr flight, on a very strange plane I’ve never flown before. It was a perfect end to my horror story experience.

The whole experience was a little crazy. I met all the young girls, and worked with Jessica…trying to explain it, I’ve never done anything like it before. I did “Up All Night” with Christina Applegate which was very funny, because funny people come up with funny stuff around every sentence. But this is very deep, because it’s a very complex story.”

How was working with Jessica Lange?
“Just to watch Jessica Lange work blew my mind. By the time you’re done with every scene it’s been hours, so you’d assume I got to know Jessica. Well, I don’t know how well I know Jessica Lange, but I sure know Fiona. And you’re afraid of her. You know that she’s the CEO, President of the Company, Head Witch. There’s no doubt when she walks into the room that you know who she is. (Lange) does not drop her character.”

What made you decide to do AHS: COVEN?
“You know, I’ve never been to a real horror movie. No, I didn’t want to carry around in my consciousness. This is a story about misfits. Just like “GLEE” is like misfits. I relate to misfits. I’ve been very successful as a misfit. I would have been one of those weird “GLEE” kids. I’m super blessed to be thrown into this amazing story, in its own way this is its own type of fairytale. Everyone was so supportive and loving! ”

What can we expect from your “character”?
“I’m playing Stevie Nicks. I’m me. So get ready. It’s really exciting, and I feel like I have a whole other world I’ve moved into in a way. I’ve done thousands of tours, sold millions of records…but this is a totally new experience.”

Due to the capsulized nature of the show, would you consider joining a future season? Or perhaps come to television in another capacity?
“I don’t know. I didn’t know what this really was until I watched the first episode in Paris. I would have to know what it’s going to be, but the doors are all open here. It’s been such a great experience that I don’t know why I wouldn’t want to do this again. I haven’t seen the episode yet, so after tomorrow I’ll let you know.”

My life is changed. What a wonderful woman. Check out the all NEW episode of American Horror Story: Coven on FX tomorrow, January, 8th!

AMERICAN HORROR STORY with STEVIE NICKS

Since you're already sleepless with anticipation in the face of this week's American Horror Story Stevie Nicks episode, use the long, empty hours stretching before you to ponder specifically which tunes you'll get to hear. "Stevie Nicks is fantastic in this Wednesday's COVEN episode. Guess which TWO SONGS she sings?," Ryan Murphy tweeted Monday. When venturing your guesses, keep in mind that Stevie's songs are being used as part of a plan to suss out the coven's new Supreme, and that there is no way this plan will end in anything but a really fabulous funeral pyre.

Stevie Nicks to Katy Perry "Remember sweetheart, you have no rivals"

Stevie Nicks’ Advice to Katy Perry Revealed
By now the world knows about the blossoming friendship between Katy Perry and Stevie Nicks.

Last week, during a Fleetwood Mac concert, the lead singer dedicated the band’s classic song “Landslide” to Perry and her boyfriend John Mayer, who were in the audience.

Recently Nicks opened up to ABC News Radio about first meeting the younger singer and the advice she gave her about navigating pop stardom in this day and age.

The connection between Nicks and Perry goes back to 2011, when the rock legend provided the narration for Perry’s video “The One that Got Away.” But the two only actually met for the first time this past fall, when they were both in London for performances.

“I met her after her rehearsal at 11:30 [at the hotel],” Nicks told ABC News Radio. “I thought it was going to be a 20 minute, ‘Hey, how are you doing?’ thing — and we sat for three hours until, like, three in the morning. And we pretty much talked about everything.”

What Nicks found most interesting, though, was when Perry asked her about her solo career, which started in 1981 with the release of the album Bella Donna.

“She said to me, ‘So when you did Bella Dona who were your rivals?’” Nicks told ABC News Radio. “And I was, like, speechless. I was, like, ‘I didn’t have any rivals.’ And she said, ‘Really? None?’ I said, ‘No…the girls in Heart [were] friends. Pat Benatar [was a] friend.”

When Nicks asked Perry if she had rivals, the pop star replied, “Well, it’s not us. It’s the Internet.”

She then told Nicks about the way that fans of various female pop stars will sometimes pit one against the other in ways the singers themselves don’t condone.

“I said to her, ‘Katy, let me tell you something. You don’t have any rivals. So forget that. Never say that word again,’” Nicks told ABC News Radio. “‘You don’t have rivals. All of those girls? Friends. You’ll probably work with all of them at some point. Friends.’”

ABC News

So that's what Stevie meant in her dedication to Katy in Las Vegas on December 30th. I was confused by that at first.  This explains it.
"And remember sweet heart, you have no rivals".

Interview: Stevie Nicks on 'In Your Dreams' American Horror Story #AHS Fleetwood Mac and John McVie

Stevie Nicks Is Still On Hyperdrive
An interview with the hard-working Fleetwood Mac frontwoman
by Alanna Nash, AARP

Stevie Nicks — lead singer and co-writer of Fleetwood Mac — is on a multimedia tear. After a sold-out world tour this year she's just released the DVD In Your Dreams (a visual bookend to her acclaimed 2011 solo album of the same name), and she's drawing new fans through her guest appearance on the hit show American Horror Story, which airs early next year. She slowed down long enough to answer our questions about the seemingly timeless appeal of her music.

In Your Dreams Available at Amazon

Q: You're a very private person, but In Your Dreams was filmed in your home.

A: I had two good reasons for allowing that. First, Dave [Stewart, of the Eurythmics] said to me, "I think this
album is going to be really magic. We should film it."

"Are you kidding?" I asked him. "That means I'll have to wear makeup and get dressed every day."

Dave said, "Yeah, you may have to wear a little makeup, but I know how to shoot women — I've been doing it since Annie Lennox. And I use cameras that film in soft light, so we won't have to change the ambiance [of your home]. And if you don't like it, no one will ever see it."

Second, I started thinking about the Tom Petty documentary Runnin' Down a Dream, where you get to see the Traveling Wilburys — and then, in the blink of an eye, two of them [Roy Orbison and George Harrison] are gone. So I thought, "We don't live forever — let's do this!"

Photo by: Geert Van de Velde
Q: Fleetwood Mac had to cancel the Australia and New Zealand legs of the tour so bass player John McVie could undergo cancer treatment.

A: Yes, but he's doing well. He's going to have a little operation in January, but he'll come through with flying colors. There's nothing wimpy about John.

Q: We're at that age where issues of vulnerability crop up.

A: Well, I lost my godson to an overdose of Xanax and alcohol at a frat party two years ago, three weeks before my mom died. And I see a lot of young people heading down a bad road, so I'm much more worried about their mortality rate than mine. It makes me realize life is precious, and that I need to keep in contact with all my friends.

Q: You're doing a longer concert set than you ever have. How do you stay healthy?

A: I do Weight Watchers and take a lot of vitamins, but I don't really work out — unless you count dancing around the house and the hotel room. We're always doing shows — those are my workout. If I have a day off, I stay in bed: I make myself a hot-water bottle and some tea, and I don't move.

Q: Fleetwood Mac's classic album, Rumours, turned 36 in 2013. Why does our generation — and the next few, apparently — love that record so much?

A: When you listen to those songs, you don't feel like you're listening to old music. A 16-year-old girl can listen to "Gold Dust Woman" and go, "Oh — that's me."

Q: And now you're going to be on American Horror Story.

A: Yes! I think that happened because I got into the Glee tribe when they did the episode on Fleetwood Mac. I don't usually watch horror, but this is a great way to take my music to a whole other generation of kids. My niece told me, "I've lived in your world my whole life — now you're coming into mine."
Q: You hadn't acted since your fourth-grade school play. What was the experience like?

A: I'm no Katharine Hepburn, but I did the best I could. I told [producer] Ryan Murphy, "I don't want my tombstone to read, 'Great songwriter, lousy actress.' So if I'm that bad, just take me out."

I loved meeting Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates and all the girls, and I'm excited about my role, which is a crazy one — I play myself, and then some! I think people will be surprised. I can't tell you more than that, because it's a total secret society; anyone who breathes a word of what's going on could disappear.

Q: The way you dress on stage fits perfectly into American Horror Story.

A: Yes, when Lily Rabe walks away and you see her hair — and the skirt, and the shawl, and the boots — there's no doubt that looks like me.

Q: Young girls have started showing up at concerts rocking your look. Is it fun to appeal to them?

A: It is. I created that look in 1976. The first year I went on tour with Fleetwood Mac, I took just my street clothes. We had no money, so I never ate; then I quickly gained 10 pounds, and nothing fit. So when I got home I went to designer Margi Kent and said, "Listen, I just want a handkerchiefy skirt, and a leotard, and a little riding jacket, and some black platform boots, and a chiffon scarf, and I want you to make three sets of those. That's going to be my uniform."

As we went along, we added some ponchos. I found the top hat in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1978. The skirts came up, the skirts came down, but my basic look is exactly the same as ever. I always said, "I want to wear this outfit at 28, but I also want to be able to wear it at 60." Not in a million years did I believe I'd still be wearing it at 60! But I'm proud if I created a fashion statement.

Q: According to the In Your Dreams documentary, love has no age limit.

A: None at all! I believe that I could meet my great love at 70. I just have to run into the right person. People tweet, text, email and Facebook, but they don't sit in the same room and deal with each other face to face. That really bothers me. It makes me think, "Well, you'll never meet anybody." But I've felt that way before, then walked around the corner and looked into the eyes of somebody who would become one of my great loves.

When you're not looking is when people show up. So if it happens, great, and if it doesn't, that's OK; I'm a creative person, and I fill my world with creativity.

Chart Updates: Fleetwood Mac back at No.1 in Australia. Stevie Nicks has a 4th week on DVD Chart

This week around the world we see the usual suspects charting on the main charts - all hits packages from the 1992 4CD box set "25 Years - The Chain" (reissued in 2012) to Fleetwood Mac's 2002 2CD "The Very Best Of".  Stevie's new DVD "In Your Dreams" is still going strong on the top 40 hanging on for a 4th week and Rumours appears once on the UK Catalogue Albums chart where I think it's taken up permanent residency.  I still find it impressive that any of these albums appear on any charts given the glut of new music out there and the age of some of these Fleetwood Mac titles. Just goes to show the testament of good quality music.

Fleetwood Mac
Christine McVie appeared briefly on stage with them last year and has publicly expressed a desire to rejoin properly. There’s talk from their camp of an album in late summer, which would be their first in more than a decade, but it’s all very vague at the moment.

REVIEW: Fleetwood Mac December 30, MGM Grand Garden Arena ★★★★ (out of 5)

CONCERT REVIEW:
Fleetwood Mac Caps Its Tour With An Emotional Vegas Stop
by Andrea Domanick

Lindsey Buckingham shared an old music-business axiom during Fleetwood Mac’s year-end show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Monday.“‘If it works, run it into the ground,’” he said. “Well, that may work if you’re trying to be a businessman, but not if you’re trying to be an artist.”

Though Buckingham was referring to the stylistic departure of 1979’s experimental opus Tusk, it’s a mentality that speaks to the band as a whole. At a time when many of their classic-rock peers have devolved into nostalgia-driven caricatures of themselves, Fleetwood Mac remains unapologetically authentic.

Never far from emotional tumult, the band closed out its 63-date world tour Monday night with the return of bassist John McVie, who left the band to undergo cancer treatment this fall, delivering a relentless three-hour set of classics and deeper cuts that left the crowd and the band in tears.

Fleetwood Mac Rank No.14 on Pollstar Year End Top 20 Worldwide Tours. Details here

Fleetwood Mac grossed nearly 100 million dollars performing 67 shows in 63 cities in 2013 landing them at No.14 on Pollstars Year End Top 20 Worldwide Tours tally.  Almost 900,000 fans from US/Canada, UK and Europe saw the band between April and December.  Pollstars full 2013 touring report will come available January 9th.

Just to compare to the last time the band toured I dug out the 2009 Year End Results from Pollstar - they ranked No.13 in the world for the Unleashed Tour grossing 84.9 million from 79 shows in 72 cities. What you have to look at is the increase in the Average Ticket Price and the Average Attendance per show for 2013 - both of which are way up, which increases your per show take.  The band did very well in 2013!

“I think we should just slip into darkness,” Nicks suggested by way of introducing “Dreams” on Monday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, setting up a song about love giving way to loneliness, a full heart to an empty bed.

A few numbers later, during “Rhiannon,” footage of a solar eclipse was shown on the large video screen that served as the backdrop of the otherwise unadorned stage, an apt visual metaphor for Fleetwood Mac.

As those images suggested, the sun hasn’t always shone on this bunch, its rays swallowed not by the passing moon, but by the band members’ once fractious relationships with each other.

By now, Fleetwood Mac’s past romantic entanglements with one another, gnarled as the roots of some old tree, are as well known as the songs they inspired, having catalyzed the overheated passions behind their most commercially successful record, 1977’s “Rumours,” an emotional mushroom cloud that’s sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

All these years later, the frustration and hurt that invigorated that album has been consoled, feelings mended. But the band still mines those emotions to an explosive degree on stage, harnessing the energy into their performances.

On Monday, with the band playing the final public performance of its current 63-date tour, Nicks’ voice sounded like something bottled decades ago and uncorked just for this occasion, exquisitely preserved, ageless.

Singer-guitarist Lindsey Buckingham howled and cooed, fumed and sighed, a yo-yo of emotion who scratched at his guitar like a cat shredding furniture, his playing expressive, haunting, combustible.

He stomped up and down with such force at times, the stage microphones actually picked up the thud of his feet.

And then there was the combo of drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie, both ace blues vets who favored finesse over forcefulness. (McVie was playing his first show after getting treated for cancer in the fall.)

Though selections from “Rumours” made up the largest portion of the band’s set list, seven of 23 songs in all, and were as warmly received as long-lost relatives, the centerpiece of the show was a suite of songs from 1979’s “Tusk,” an ambitious, forward-looking double-album that was the first record to ever be tracked digitally and which deliberately pushed hard against the bounds of the band’s well-manicured, harmony-laden sound.

Prior to beginning the four-song run with the curled lip rush of “Not That Funny,” which pushed and shoved its way to a snarling chorus and is the closest this bunch has ever come to punk, Buckingham imagined, with clear relish, the horror of the band’s record company executive upon hearing the album for the first time.

Then came the rhapsodic rumble of the album’s title track, which was heightened by marching band horns, the shadowy whisper of “Sisters of the Moon,” which the group was performing on tour for the first time in 30 years, and gorgeous, plaintive ballad “Sarah,” a cathartic exhale after which Nicks and Buckingham embraced at the center of the stage.

Ultimately, this was the prevailing tone of the evening, one of resolve and a hard fought mutual admiration, especially between the aforementioned former couple.

Prior to performing “Without You,” an old Buckingham Nicks tune that Fleetwood Mac finally recorded and officially released on the four-song “Extended Play” in April, Nicks fondly recalled the early days of her romance with Buckingham in the fertile ’60s San Francisco rock scene.

“I found him to be sexy and so nice and so very, very talented,” she said of the man standing to her left, once her foil, before singing the song with him, their voices locked together like the clasped hands of a pair of smitten teenagers.

Next , there was the wistful, chiming pop of “Gypsy,” some sweetly sung nostalgia where Nicks reflects on the days when she and Buckingham were so broke, they slept on a mattress on a floor.

It all built up to their warmest shared moment in “Say Goodbye,” a song that Buckingham penned a decade ago to bring some closure to his relationship with Nicks.

“Now I finally found my way / Now I know just what to do / Once you said goodbye to me / Now I say goodbye to you,” he wrote.

Just the two of them on stage, Nicks and Buckingham sang it together, as a hush fell over the crowd.

Remember all that darkness that Nicks had spoken of earlier?

In the end, it was gone in a flash of light, a song.

REMINDER: Jan 1st 5-7pm @BBCRadio2 "Beyond The Rumours" Johnnie Walker Meets Fleetwood Mac

Beyond The Rumours - Johnnie Walker Meets Fleetwood Mac and unearths the truth Beyond and Behind the rumours.

Late last year, a packed audience at London's O2 Arena went wild as Fleetwood Mac welcomed on stage Christine McVie, completing the line-up of the band that produced one of the biggest selling albums of all times "Rumours".

The success of Fleetwood Mac, is without precedent considering the varying line ups. However, the constants include their remarkable drummer and "big daddy" of the group Mick Fleetwood and the "quiet man", bassist John McVie. Which is fortunate as that's how the band's name came about, combining their two surnames way back in 1967.

Across two hours Johnnie Walker speaks to Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and features a rare interview with, pianist and singer-songwriter Christine McVie. We learn how they all had their part to play in the jigsaw puzzle of Fleetwood Mac's enduring success. Despite the sometimes hedonistic lifestyle, divorces and ego clashes, they couldn't have produced decades of hit records without love and friendship.

Johnnie Walker takes us "Beyond The Rumours".

Tune In: January 1, 2014 on BBC Radio 2 from 5pm-7pm UK time. Listen on-line

Also...
"Woman's Hour" BBC Radio 4
January 1st at 10:00am

An interview with Stevie Nicks conducted September 16, 2013 in London will replay on the show. Listen in for that at 10:00am on BBC Radio 4, or listen to the interview now on-line here.

Stevie Nicks has been called “the ultimate rock goddess,” and now at 65 is certainly not about to retire from the role. Reunited with Fleetwood Mac, she’s about to play a string of UK dates on a massive world tour, the band’s multi-million selling album Rumours has been re-released 35 years after it reached number one, they have an EP of new material, and tonight she premiers her new film, In Your Dreams – a documentary about her solo album of the same name. But she’s famed too, of course, not just for her music, but also for the ‘soap opera’ of drugs,  relationships and break-ups that was a backdrop to the music of Fleetwood Mac – and particularly for her difficult romantic relationship and breakup with band member Lindsay Buckingham, which she sang about in her hit song Dreams. Stevie Nicks joins Jane Garvey to discuss being a woman in a very male dominated music world, her tumultuous personal relationships, dealing with addiction, her new documentary, being reunited with bandmate Christine McVie, and her relationship today with ex-partner and guitarist Lindsay Buckingham.

Happy New Years Eve: Fleetwood Mac Live in Las Vegas

FLEETWOOD MAC LIVE
LAS VEGAS, NV - DECEMBER 30, 2013
MGM GRAND ARENA

Fleetwood Mac's second show in Vegas this year was much like their first in terms of set list (see below) and staging. They brought their well oiled machine back to the MGM Grand Arena for a New Years celebration that turned out to be even more special with John McVie back up on stage for the first time since the tour was side-lined in October at the end of the European dates. Hope he's doing well and I'm sure this show was great for his spirit.

One short video clip of the tail end of Gold Dust Woman is a must see!... Stevie once again, in just a few brief moments is electrifying on this song!  So glad she kept up the extended version of the song, I love it! Check it out here: GOLD DUST WOMAN

Not sure if the hidden track (Without You intro) was still in the set list tonight.. Maybe someone that was at the show can confirm.

Dedications tonight: Stevie dedicated "Landslide" to Katy Perry and John Mayer (see below). Lindsey dedicated the last song of the night "Say Goodbye" to Stevie which brought tears to her eyes... Sweet!

One notable wardrobe change for Stevie... During Gypsy, she was rockin' the tall beige boots with her black outfit.

Fleetwood Mac have two more shows in Las Vegas. Dec 31st again at MGM Grand for a private New Years Eve party put on by the MGM Grand. Plus on January 8th at the Paris Hotel for the Monster CES Awards ceremony.

Thanks to everyone that shared photos and video clips... Very cool of ya!

Say Goodbye
Stevie's clearly emotional during the song looking at Lindsey, singing the words, remembering,
"Just a time within a time / Just a scheme within a scheme
A little world within a world / Just, a dream, just a dream"
