Review: Fleetwood Mac: 1969 to 1972 [vinyl boxed set]

“Fleetwood Mac: 1969 to 1972” (Reprise)

The first thing that comes to mind when mentioning Fleetwood Mac is their seminal album “Rumours.” But the band’s pre-”Rumours” days are rich with bluesy offerings that are well worth revisiting on the new box set “Fleetwood Mac: 1969 to 1972.”

The highlight of the four-album, vinyl collection is the first re-mastered edition of “Then Play On,” Fleetwood Mac’s 1969 debut album on Reprise Records. This is a raw, young blues-fueled Fleetwood Mac and the sense of urgency to their music is on full display. The opening, bongo-backed track “Coming Your Way” bristles with pace and the all-out house rocker “Fighting For Madge” showcases guitarist Peter Green as a force to rival Eric Clapton of that era.

“Future Games” is another winning platter, though it presents a softer Fleetwood Mac. By 1971 we find them putting together the less edgy sound that would prove to be the backbone to their radio mainstay hits to come. “Fleetwood Mac: 1969 to 1972” aptly presents the formative years of one of the most successful bands in history.

Christine McVie wants to rejoin Fleetwood Mac! if they want her back?

Christine McVie: I want to rejoin Fleetwood Mac

Singer and songwriter says she would like to return to band she left 15 years ago – if they want her back
The Guardian

When Christine McVie joined her old band, Fleetwood Mac, onstage during their recent shows at the O2 in London, it was billed as little more than a special treat for fans.

Yet the group's singer, keyboardist and songwriter seems to have caught the bug and has said she would like to rejoin permanently. "I like being with the band, the whole idea of playing music with them," she said. "I miss them all. If they were to ask me I would probably be very delighted … but it hasn't happened so we'll have to wait and see."

McVie was with the band for 28 years before quitting in 1998. "I think I was just music'd out," she said. "I suffered from some kind of delusion that I wanted to be an English country girl, a Sloane Ranger or something … and it took me 15 years to realise that it's not really what I wanted at all."

McVie was the band's main songwriter and central to its transformation from a blues group to the current incarnation featuring Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham that created the pop-oriented sound behind huge-selling albums such as Rumours and Tango in the Night. McVie wrote Don't Stop, Songbird and Everywhere, among many others.

She has never before expressed regrets about leaving and has spent the past decade living a reclusive life in a
17th-century mansion in Kent. Despite this, she thrilled fans during Fleetwood Mac's current tour by joining the band for a run-through of Don't Stop. McVie said playing with the band again was like riding a bike. "It was amazing, like I'd never left. I climbed back on there again and there they were, the same old faces on stage."

Fleetwood Mac are on a tour break after cancelling several Australian and New Zealand dates after news that their bassist, John McVie, has cancer. They plan to resume touring when he is better. McVie said her ex-husband's prognosis was "really good. He's having his treatment in LA right now, but they caught it really early so he should be up and running in a couple of months."

Nicks has often said she wants Christine McVie to rejoin. However, recent reports suggest guitarist Buckingham is worried her appearance could steal the limelight. McVie said this was "fair enough. From his point of view, it was a business thing. [Promoters] would be asking why I wasn't playing in Amsterdam or Berlin. They obviously wanted headlines about them, not me, and I quite agree with that."

McVie accepts rejoining is a long way off. "It's a long way down that path if it ever were to happen. John's got to get well first, so it hasn't been talked about. We'll have to wait and see."

Her remarks were made in a Guardian interview with her and Nicks to be published later this year. During the interview, in which they discuss their friendship, their decadent 1970s lifestyle and experiences of sexism in the music industry.

Stevie Nicks sings and acts in American Horror Story AND she may return for second episode!

Ryan Murphy interview with Entertainment Weekly about last nights American Horror Story: Coven (Nov 20th - Ep7)

You tweeted a photo of Stevie Nicks on set filming her upcoming guest-spot. How did it go?

You know Stevie is just fantastic. I don’t think Lily Rabe has recovered. She was great. She gets to sing. She does a little acting, which she was great in. The great thing is Stevie has some wonderful ideas based on some of her songs so we were like, “Oh we’re going to use that.” So we’re actually going to try and have Stevie come back and do another episode because she’s so good.

Johnnie Walker Meets…
Fleetwood Mac, Wednesday 1 January, 5pm-7pm

Late last year, a packed audience at London’s O2 Arena went wild as Fleetwood Mac welcomed Christine McVie on stage - completing the line-up of the band that produced one of the biggest selling albums of all times - Rumours.

The success of Fleetwood Mac is without precedent considering the varying line-ups. However, the constants include their remarkable drummer and 'big daddy' of the group Mick Fleetwood and the 'quiet man', bassist John McVie. Which is fortunate, as that’s how the band’s name came about, combining their two surnames way back in 1967.

Across two hours, Johnnie Walker speaks to Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and features a rare interview with pianist and singer-songwriter Christine McVie. Listeners will get to hear how they all had their part to play in the jigsaw puzzle of Fleetwood Mac’s enduring success. Despite the sometimes hedonistic lifestyle, divorces and ego clashes, they couldn’t have produced decades of hit records without love and friendship.

Tune in New Years Day to BBC Radio 2.  This program will be streamed on-line

[This just might be the interview that Johnnie Walker had with Christine back in the early fall in London that he never aired on his program]

Bank of America Flowers Commercial using Fleetwood Mac's "Never Going Back Again"

The commercial features a man in a taxi with a bouquet of flowers. He takes one flower up to an apartment of presumably a girlfriend. The commercial is part of Bank of America’s ‘Connect‘ campaign. There is a solo guitar song playing in the background and the tune is Fleetwood Mac‘s ‘Never Going Back Again.’ from the 1977 album "Rumours"

Stevie Nicks Interviewed for new book: 1963: The Year of the Revolution

1963: The Year of the Revolution

How Youth Changed the World with Music, Art, and Fashion
By Ariel Leve, Robin Morgan

1963: The Year of the Revolution is the first book to recount the kinetic story of the liberation of youth through music, fashion, and the arts—and in the voices of those who changed the world so radically, from Keith Richards to Eric Clapton, Mary Quant to Vidal Sassoon, Graham Nash to Peter Frampton, Alan Parker to Gay Talese, Stevie Nicks to Norma Kamali, and many more. It is an oral history that records, documentary-style, the incredible roller-coaster ride of that year, in which a group of otherwise obscure teenagers would become global superstars. It serves not only as a fast-paced, historical eyewitness account but as an inspiration to anyone in search of a passion, an identity, and a dream.
