Mick Fleetwood Interview: This may be John McVie's final tour

Fleetwood Mac’s John McVie: This might be my final tour
By Annette Sharp
The Daily Telegraph

TWO years after pulling the pin on their 2013 Australian tour following bass player John McVie’s cancer diagnosis, Fleetwood Mac’s most famous and most successful line-up landed in Sydney this week ahead of what McVie has indicated might be his last tour with the band that bears his name.

Founding member Mick Fleetwood, 68, was respectful when he spoke of McVie’s recent health crisis during a sound check at Allphones Arena yesterday.

“I raised a toast the other night with Christine (McVie). He’s well as well, absolutely (in) tip top health and that’s pivotal. And outside of it, it’s great to be here and playing.

“It’s a revisitation,” Fleetwood enthused of his 69-year-old creative partner with whom he founded the band in 1963.

“John’s very practical. He didn’t get into it (cancer talk) one way or the other. I’m an old drama queen but John just said, ‘OK, let’s get it fixed’ and that was that. Never heard any more about it and it was fixed, and we’ve been on the road ever since.”

In May, McVie said his playing days would soon be at an end: “How much longer can the Mac be a working band? Not much longer, for me anyway. It’s not the music. It’s the peripherals, the travelling. Mick will go on until they put him up against a wall and shoot him.”

The return to the line-up of McVie’s ex-wife, singer and keyboardist Christine, 72, who parted ways with Fleetwood Mac in 1998 and was retired from the music business, has been described by guitarist Lindsey Buckingham as “really beautiful”. Buckingham also quit the band for 16 years from 1987 to 2003.

“(Christine) just sort of woke up and said, ‘I’m not done. I want to be more alive’,” Fleetwood said.

Fleetwood acknowledges relations within the band, which includes three
ex- couples — Buckingham, 66, and singer/songwriter Stevie Nicks, 67, the McVies and Fleetwood and Nicks — are still fiery 40 years after the most famous Mac five first collaborated in 1975.

“I don’t think Lindsey and Stevie will ever not be able to suppress various emotive buttons that exist. One lives in hope, as I think they do,” he said of the former lovers, who started working together at 16.

“Having Chris back is hugely amazing. I think Stevie’s loving it and Chris is, too.

Touring the world was “sort of” easier today, added Fleetwood, whose battle with cocaine addiction is the stuff of rock legend. (He once estimated that, laid end to end, the cocaine he consumed during his life would stretch seven miles).

‘‘Those, looking back on it, were sort of a bit harder. Harder to juggle feeling good and being professional. Those days are long gone.’’

Fleetwood says this time there will be only just the occasional “little jug” of wine during this tour.

The band plays Allphones Arena on October 22, 24 and 25.

Orange Amplifiers Sign Fleetwood Mac's John McVie

Orange Amplification is pleased to announce that Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie has become their latest Ambassador. John co-founded the band along with drummer Mick Fleetwood, and the pair has gone on to form a lasting partnership that has long been regarded as one of the best rhythm sections in the history of Rock music.

Talking about becoming a new Orange Ambassador John stated, “The guys at Orange, have really put together a great amp system for me. It truly delivers the punch, bottom end and quality of sound that makes it a pleasure to hear night after night.”

John McVie’s bass legacy has anchored one of the biggest bands in the world, leading to his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. He has provided one stellar bass line after another for Fleetwood Mac, through a multiple of line-ups that includes the classic 1970’s group, which created the timeless hit albums Rumours and Tusk. Bassist John McVie of Fleetwood Mac buys Raymond Chandler haunt in Brentwood

Turns out the buyer of the Brentwood property that was briefly home to novelist-screenwriter Raymond Chandler was bassist John McVie of Fleetwood Mac fame.

The Spanish-style house sold last year for $2.535 million -- close to 6% above the $2.395-million asking price.

Built in 1927, the 2,150-square-foot single-story retains such design features as a red-tile roof, interior arches and tile surrounding the wood-burning fireplace in the living room. There are French doors, two bedrooms and three bathrooms.

A guesthouse, ideal for studio space, has heated concrete floors, a vaulted ceiling and solar panels.

McVie, 69, joined Fleetwood Mac in the late 1960s and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band some three decades later. They continue to tour. Among their enduring hit songs are “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way,” “Rhiannon” and “Don’t Stop.”

Chandler, who died in 1959 at 70, wrote detective mysteries. Many of his novels, including “The Big Sleep,” “Farewell, My Lovely” and “The Long Goodbye,” were made into movies. He moved frequently and lived in the Brentwood house only a short time in 1942 while working on “The High Window.”

The property previously sold for in 1995 for $612,000.

Scott Behrle of Deasy Penner & Partners was the listing agent. Marcie Hartley and Brooke Kaufman of Hilton & Hyland, an affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate, represented McVie.

Fleetwood Mac Tour Manager Marty Hom reveals how John McVie cancer diagnoses discovered

Tour Managers of Foo Fighters, Rolling Stones & Fleetwood Mac Swap Wild Tales From the Road
Billboard

Some of you have toured with the same bands for more than a decade. Describe the bonds that form between you and them.

Hom: I've been with Fleetwood Mac for 17 years, Barbra for 13 years. If you've toured with somebody long enough, they are your family. And you're kind of like the dad who takes care of them, and they depend on you. The younger artists are a little different in that they surround themselves with entourages now. They have assistants, they have managers who go on the road, publicists, they have people. The relationships are still good but they're not as personal because there are layers of people you have to go through.

Sounds like it can get pretty intimate.

Hom: Let me tell you how intimate. I had to tell Ian Astbury from The Cult that his father had passed away. They were onstage at the old Omni in Atlanta, and the manager called me. It was one of the hardest things I had to do.

I was just in Europe with Fleetwood Mac and [bassist] John McVie wasn't feeling well. So we got him to a doctor in Berlin. And he called me afterward and says, "Marty, can you come over to my hotel and talk to me?" I know that's not good, so I jump in a cab and go over to his hotel. We sit down and he says, "I've just been diagnosed with cancer." And John's sitting here and then Mick [Fleetwood] comes over, and we have a discussion of what we're going to do next. We ended up canceling Australia and New Zealand-15 sold-out shows. The band thought about moving on without a bass player but...you can't get onstage without John McVie.

Video: Stevie Nicks chats about the likelihood of more solo albums

Stevie Nicks' 2011 solo album, "In Your Dreams" was her first in over a decade. The recording process took place in her home and was captured in a documentary of the same name. "We realized two weeks into it we were having a great time and that this would probably be a good thing to film. We didn't think it was going to be a movie. We just thought it would be archival footage for us and only maybe six months into it did we start to realize we had something that we would want to share with the world." says Nicks.
Available at Amazon
or Warner Bros.

On Collaborating with Dave Stewart:
The film follows the iconic singer's collaboration with Eurythmics founder Dave Stewart. "It was so special that I don't know if something like this could ever be repeated again. Can Dave and I do another album together? Absolutely! Will we? Probably! Will we work together? Absolutely! Will it ever be exactly like that year? Probably not because that was like a mgical wedding where twenty people got married and it was everyday and it lasted for a year." she says.

On American Horror Story: Coven:
At 65-years old, Nicks has also started acting. She recently filmed a guest role on the 10th episode of FX's "American Horror Story:  Coven". "It was hard for me because I would get so nervous that the very simple line would just go right out of my head and I would be like ok say it over and over again and then it wouldn't come out."

On Fleetwood Mac and John McVie:
Fleetwood Mac cancelled several dates on their world tour after bassist John Mcvie was diagnosed with cancer.  Nicks says the band will be  back on stage soon. "We have three shows in Vegas. The 30th, 31st, and 8th of january and he is going to be through is treatment and then we are going to do those shows and then he is going to have a mini surgery and he is going to be all better. This band is never going to let anything get us down you know. John is going to be fine. We know that."

Stevie Nicks on "In Your Dreams DVD", John McVie's Health, Possible Future with Christine McVie

Stevie Nicks ' movie In Your Dreams, which documents the creation of her album of the same name, is out on DVD this week.  More than just your standard "making-of" film, In Your Dreams captures the surreal atmosphere at Stevie's L.A. mansion, where she, her producer Dave Stewart and various friends and associates lived and worked while recording.  The idea, says Stevie, was to give fans a truly immersive experience.

"We wanted people to feel like they were making the record with us," Stevie told ABC News Radio at her home in L.A. "We wanted people to feel like they were here in this house with me and Dave and all the characters that were here -- the singers, the chef, my goddaughter, my assistant, all the people that did all the hard work around us to make it easy, all the techs, everybody."

"There was a lot of people here every day," she adds. "And if any of my friends came into town and wanted to come over, it was fine. I don't think I've ever been in a situation like that before."  In fact, it was quite a freeing experience, because as Stevie explains, making a record with her band Fleetwood Mac pretty much requires everyone to be on lockdown.

"When you're recording with Fleetwood Mac, it is not fine to invite all your friends over.  No.  It's very closed.  It is a secret society...it is not cool," she tells ABC News Radio. "You don't just say, 'I'm coming with 10 friends.'"

Speaking of Fleetwood Mac, the band was forced to cancel their Australian and New Zealand tour when bass player John McVie was diagnosed with cancer in October.  But Stevie tells ABC News Radio, "He's doing great...if I ever had any psychic knowledge about me in this body, I am telling you that John McVie is gonna be just fine."  In fact, Stevie says John will be with the band when they play three shows in Vegas starting December 30.  Then, she says, "He's gonna have a little operation....he'll probably take a couple weeks to recover, and then...sky's the limit!"

As for John's ex-wife Christine McVie , who left Fleetwood Mac in 1998, what does Stevie think of her recent comments in the British press that she'd rejoin the band "if she was asked?"  Well, according to Stevie, Christine doesn't need an invitation.

"It is her band.  If she wants to come back, she will come back," Stevie tells ABC News Radio.  However, she says Christine needs to know what she's getting herself into. "The only thing I said to her was, 'Understand how physical this is. This is a two-hour-and-40-minute set....this is a grueling set,'" Stevie reveals, adding that she also told Christine, "Just be sure that you want to do it, because you can't come in and out if you come back!"

Stevie will meet and greet her devoted fans and sign copies of the In Your Dreams DVD on Wednesday at the Barnes & Noble at Farmer's Market, Hollywood.  Look for her there at 7 p.m.

Fleetwood Mac: John McVie's undisclosed cancer was caught early enough and he is in good spirits

FLEETWOOD MAC: McVie's Cancer Caught Early

John McVie's undisclosed cancer was caught early enough and he is in good spirits -- at least according to John Mayall, who employed McVie in the Bluesbreakers before he left to join Fleetwood Mac.

Mayall told 94.5 3WS he called his friend and says McVie is "very optimistic and together on it because it's such an early stage that it is treatable... He didn't seem like an ill person on the phone."

As a result of the treatments McVie is undergoing, Fleetwood Mac's Australian tour has been canceled, but their December 30th show in Las Vegas is still on their schedule.

Christine McVie May Visit Mick & John prior to Fleetwood Mac Rehearsals

Christine McVie - January, 1993
Photo: Neal Preston

Fleetwood Mac will kick-off their 2013 tour in Columbus on April 4th, and fans should expect to see a foursome on the stage comprised of Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood.

The group did not reach out to Christine McVie for the upcoming tour, knowing that she would turn down the offer. Christine retired in 1998 and currently lives in England. McVie, who wrote and sang “Say You Love Me,” “Over My Head,” “You Make Loving Fun,” “Think About Me,” “Hold Me,” “Little Lies,” and of course, “Don’t Stop”, left the band after their reunion tour promoting 1997′s The Dance.

Mick Fleetwood told Premiere Radio that Christine McVie might visit him and her ex-husband (John McVie) as they prep for the tour. “We are hearing that Christine is going to come out — she doesn’t like flying very much at all — and that was part of, one of the reasons was why she had had enough of touring. But she’s coming out to visit me and John in early February, just before we start rehearsing.”

Carl Harp, 98.5 WNCX

Interesting if this is the case!  Rehearsals would be in L.A.... What on earth would Christine be doing in L.A.? She couldn't possibly just be going to visit Mick and John on the rehearsal set! (no offence Mick). England to L.A. is a pretty fair distance to travel.  Hmmm... Makes you wonder.

[ edit: Here's audio of the interview where Mick says Christine is coming to visit... I suspect it is Hawaii like someone mentioned in the comments where she's going to meet up with Mick and John.  Still great to hear they'll be together.  Maybe they can talk her into contributing to some new music, since flying/touring is out of the question... I believe most fans would agree that appearing on new music and then not touring would be just fine with us... Agree or disagree? ]

Fleetwood Mac hit the road | Showbiz | Express.co.uk

First of all... no need to panic, nothings been announced yet.

Second.... Three interesting points this article makes:

  1. Reforming for a series of concerts prior to a world tour next year?
  2. Possibly releasing new material for a proposed greatest hits release?
  3. This may be the end of the road for the band?

FLEETWOOD MAC HIT THE ROAD
Express.co.uk
By James Desborough
Sunday October 14,2012

SUPERGROUP Fleetwood Mac are planning a world tour next year after reforming for a series of concerts following months of wrangling between drummer Mick Fleetwood and singer Stevie Nicks.

The rock giants are hitting the road to mark the 45th anniversary of the release of the band’s first album, with a different line-up, in 1968.

Singer Stevie Nicks has agreed to reunite with Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. British singer Christine McVie is not expected to sign up.

Last night a spokesman for Nicks confirmed plans for the tour: “It’s certainly looking that way. I don’t have specifics yet.”

The group may even record new material for a proposed greatest hits release.

A source in Los Angeles said: “The Fleetwood Mac tour is on. This may be the end of the road for them after so many great years. They are all older and getting together can be a struggle with their commitments. They all want to go out on a bang.”

Mick Fleetwood Interview: 8 Page Purple Magazine Spread

In the late ’60s Fleetwood Mac, the band led by the guitarist and singer Peter Green, was one of the most influential groups in Britain. Their music was dark, heavy, haunted, minimal, hypnotic, and sexy. In 1970 Peter Green quit the band due to a nervous breakdown, but he left behind a template for his bandmates. In the following five years, during which the band made six albums, drummer MICK FLEETWOOD, bassist John McVie, and keyboardist/vocalist Christine McVie maintained the Fleetwood Mac sound using various front men.

In 1975 they hooked up with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks in Los Angeles and within weeks recorded one of the biggest-selling rock records of all time. Amazingly, the band achieved great success without having any management: Mick Fleetwood and John McVie steered the band through the ’70s, cocktails in hand. Fleetwood Mac never had a stylist-assisted image or a management company’s plan. Yet their music and visual style continues to inspire and influence young people.

I was lucky enough to talk to Mick Fleetwood about the elements that comprise the Fleetwood Mac style.

NEW Unseen Video: Fleetwood Mac "You Make Loving Fun" Australia 1977 Rumours Tour

Another amazing slice of Mac history making it's way online for the first time ever!
This never before seen video has Christine McVie taking the spotlight with "You Make Loving Fun". This is the 4th video in a series of videos that have just made there way online in the last few weeks, taken from a show in Sydney Australia, November, 1977.

Cool snapshot of Fleetwood Mac in simpler times... It's amazing listening and watching this knowing there are only the 5 of them on stage creating this sound.  No back up singers, no extra guitar players, or extra percussion players... just the 5 fireflies.
