#idol Recap of Haley Singing Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac a Stevie Nicks Penned Song

[From Wednesday's American Idol Show]

Haley Reinhart sings “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac on American Idol 2011.

Fleetwood Mac came back big on Glee a couple of weeks ago and last night Stevie Nicks was on Dancing With The Stars. Tonight, American Idol finalist Haley Reinhart channeled her inner Stevie Nicks as she performed “Rhiannon” live. Jimmy Iovine chose the song for Haley and despite it being a little windy on the Idol stage; Haley Reinhart did the song justice. Can she win American Idol Season 10?

By Brian Mansfield,

Watching Haley audition, I'm more convinced than ever that she's improved as much as any top-three contestant I've ever seen. The voice was there from the beginning, but she has learned how to use it better and how to present herself.

Haley says remembering the words will be a challenge as she sings Fleetwood Mac's Rhiannon. "From the minute I met you, I felt you should sing a Stevie Nicks song," he says. Haley's a Stevie Nicks fan, via her mother.

Haley gets smoke and dramatic black-and-white lighting for Rhiannon, which begins with only piano accompaniment before kicking into a more Mac-like arrangement for the second verse, at which point a wind machine kicks up underneath her, blowing her hair and her dress every which way. More than Scotty or Lauren, Haley knows how present a song, and the show's producers are giving her every opportunity to show off that skill. Good performance, great TV.

For me, Round Two goes to Haley, too, though Scotty came close.

And, at this point, even the awkward banter with the judges is playing to her favor.

"You're in a zone right now," Randy says. "You're just having a good time right now. ... I would grow my hair out if I could have the whole wind thing."

"You remind me of why I fell in love with Stevie Nicks to begin with," says Steven.

"It was a really beautiful moment," Jennifer says, "and you looked really beautiful on camera. ... It was a nice contrast to what you did earlier."

From the judges, Round Two is a mixed result: Steven goes for Lauren Alaina, while Jennifer and Randy (and Jimmy) go for Scotty.

"It's going to be an interesting finish," says Ryan, pointing out that Neil Sedaka is sitting next to Jimmy.

she really studied Stevie over the years...starting with Stevie's solo version of Rhiannon and then kicking into the rocking Fleetwood Mac version. the guitar player below her and the 3 backup singers-cracked me up. she just needed ribbons on the microphone. i still dont think anyone should do a Stevie Nicks song but Stevie... but she gave it a very good go!

I'm so glad people are looking to Stevie for inspiration and respecting her for what she has done and what she is still doing!

In Danny Goldberg's book (he started Stevie's record company Modern Records with Paul Fishkin) he says that when Jimmy Iovine was hired to produce the "Bella Donna" album Stevie said to him that he was very Rhiannon. And he said to her that he was not. Now all these years later it is funny that Jimmy wanted this girl to sing Rhiannon. Everything comes full circle.

And I think she sang it fine, I hope she wins.

I agree with one of the above posts nobody should sing a Stevie Nicks song but Stevie!!!

Saying nobody should sing a Stevie song but Stevie is an insult to her songwriting ability. Every great songwriter loves to have their songs covered by other artists, including Stevie. She has said so many times. Besides it was the successof the Smashing Pumpkins version of "Landslide" that began Lindsey thinking about "The Dance" reunion in the first place. Of couse nobody sings anything like Stevie does, I think that's why we all love her. Her voice is completely unique. But that doesn't mean other versions of her songs are not worthy.

I just think this was a bad song for anyone to sing unless they have a good five minutes to sing it. Haley is a better singer vocally then Stevie. She wanted to do more than just sing these little verses. She tried but not enough time. It cracks me up that some of the idiots are saying she ruined the song. How many songs of Stevie's own material has Stevie ruined.

any artist with decades of live performances under their belt, will assuredly have had bad performances...I hope that was your point. More accurately I believe u just want to feel better about yourself by bashing on Stevie and pissing off her true fans.

The song was spliced up so many times it felt rushed and piecey.
That and the fact that she doesn't have the "soul" that Stevie has made it not very good. Tired of this bubblegum Idol crap.. these are not real artists.. JImmy must be getting paid a whole lot of money to support this crap. Music just isn't what it was.. and I'm a young fan.

Sorry - it sucked. Classic Stevie signature song. Leave it be. And yes, she did eff up the lyrics. One has to be pretty big in the boots to take this on and do it justice. And stay away from Gold Dust Woman, girlie.
