Stevie Nicks’ Bella Donna introduced the Fleetwood Mac singer as a solo force, delivering four hit singles, including “Edge Of Seventeen,” “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” (with Tom Petty), and “Leather And Lace” (with Don Henley). The album topped the Billboard 200 and has sold over five million copies worldwide.

A deeply personal and long-overdue solo debut, Bella Donna drew on nearly a decade of songwriting that hadn’t fit within Fleetwood Mac. “What I wanted my whole life was to do this album,” Nicks says in the liner notes by GRAMMY® Award-winning music journalist Bob Mehr. “Making Bella Donna really saved my life.”

Produced by Jimmy Iovine and recorded with a powerhouse studio band—including Benmont Tench, Roy Bittan, Russ Kunkel, and Waddy Wachtel—the album feels immediate, like a live performance. “Most of this album was done with everybody in the room,” Nicks recalled. “Very few overdubs.” Songs like “After The Glitter Fades” and “Edge Of Seventeen” showcase the emotional range and intensity that defined Nicks’ solo voice.

I have seen Fleetwood Mac from outside an arena, along with 500 other people who couldn't get a ticket for the Rumours tour; inside the same packed arena for the Tusk tour; Stevie Nicks solo in an arena setting; and, last night, Lindsey Buckingham in a smaller, more intimate but still packed venue. I enjoyed them all.

Short but stellar: Lindsey Buckingham's solo concert at Birmingham's Alys Stephens Center

A stellar solo concert. An attentive, appreciative group of listeners filled the majority of seats in the concert hall and gave Buckingham several standing ovations. The choral balcony was blocked with curtains; the venue holds about 1,100 people in that configuration.

Its interesting to note that on the eve of Bella Donna's anniversary that an interview is published with Stevie comparing the writing and recording process of her current album to that of Bella Donna.

When band guys go solo on side... WORKED FOR STEVIE NICKS!

When band guys go solo on side, it rarely works:

The solo side project is the biggest longshot bet in mainstream music. For every good album produced by a band member striking out on his or her own - and we'll get to these exceptions later - there are 25 bad ones. Music fans who repeatedly blow money on solo side projects inevitably feel a lot of rage. After getting burnt by one Mick Jagger solo album, the decision to buy a second one is practically an act of self-hatred.

It's when an artist chooses to dabble in solo work while remaining with the band that everything seems to go to hell. The most memorable example came on Sept. 18, 1978, when each of the four members of Kiss simultaneously released solo side projects. Three of the entries were mind-bendingly atrocious. (Ace Frehley's was just bad.)

Below are four exceptions to the solo side project rule. Solo albums made by artists who are the clear front person of their band (Bruce Springsteen, etc.) weren't included. Add your solo side project winners and losers to the comments in the sfgate.com version of this column.

Stevie Nicks, "Bella Donna." The first solo album from Stevie Nicks released in 1981 was painfully straightforward - there was a white-winged dove in the lyrics and on the album cover - and still blew away its high expectations. Nearly 30 years later, "Edge of Seventeen" continues to sound urgent. ("After the Glitter Fades," not so much ...) And she kills on "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" by Tom Petty, who co-produced "Bella Donna."

Brief History on WLIR:

WLIR is “World Famous” mostly for the 80’s and “New Wave” format. ‘LIR was already adding cuts from Blondie, Talking Heads, and the Ramones to the latest Rolling Stones or Neil Young album cuts in the late ‘70’s. In early 1980 the Screamers of the Week (best new song as voted by the listeners) included new songs by the Kinks, Hall and Oats, Bruce Springsteen, and even Manfred Mann, along with emerging artists such as the Clash, Joan Jett, and Elvis Costello.

It became apparent there was a new music scene and enough artists that were being ignored by traditional radio to build a new format. In 1982 program director Denis McNamara decided WLIR would be the first station in the nation to be the outlet for all of this “new wave” of music. WLIR was the only place to hear the Police, the B-52’s, Duran Duran, the Cure, and many others. Listener response was sensational and WLIR became the birthplace of careers.

Many of these artists, such as the Police, the Pretenders and U-2 eventually forced their way into the mainstream. But the ‘LIR listener is familiar with so much more of their catalog that never became “hits”. WLIR was even the first station to play Madonna, George Michael, and Prince, artists who went on to make their mark in other formats.
