Q&A: Dave Grohl on His 'Sound City' Doc. Stevie Nicks on board for NYC Show

The Sound City Players are scheduled to play their next show in Los Angeles on January 31st, with other dates "coming soon in cool places," Grohl says. "The musicians have all really jumped on after the [Park City] show. I didn't know if Stevie [Nicks] was gonna be able to do New York, and after we did this she was like, 'I'm doing New York." Grohl says he'll keep crossing his fingers for an appearance from Paul McCartney.

"Tonight, I've got Lindsey Buckingham's girlfriend," said Grohl when Introducing Stevie Nicks

And then Stevie. Oh, Stevie. As cooky as you are with your sunglasses on inside of this low-lit venue on this blackest of ice-kissed nights, your voice is heart-melting mana. Grohl agreed. Before she came out, he explained her Sound City story, in which Mick Fleetwood asks the studio boss for Lindsey Buckingham's info so he can offer him a place in the Mac, and the boss explains that he'll have to let LB's GF in the band as well. "Tonight, I've got Lindsey Buckingham's girlfriend," said Grohl before trading lines with her on "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." Her bewitching quaver brought the room up a few degrees — we noted at least two coat removals during their insanely smooth rendition of "Dreams" — and though the darkly droning Johannes-assisted version of "Gold Dust Woman" was a triumph, the show's greatest moment came just before that resonant close. Suddenly the 12 people onstage became two, and Grohl picked up the night's first acoustic guitar to accompany Nicks on her first big hit, Fleetwood Mac's wistful, weather-appropriate "Landslide." Their duet nearly silenced the rowdy crowd, now four hours deep into their drinks, and even inspired the bathroom attendant to abandon his post and film with his phone. The lines about getting older could've felt literal, but Grohl's era-spanning musical circus of badassery and general excellence made the point that good music: a) is timeless, b) defies genre, and c) is always waiting in the wings — as each of his headliners were at one point or another — for fresh context and a new crowd. Concert Review: Dave Grohl's 'Sound City' Players at Sundance with Stevie Nicks

by David Burger at Salt Lake Tribune

No fewer than 38 different songs were performed during the concert, in which Dave Grohl was the only musician to be onstage for each one of those 38.

It was the rare concert that only got better the longer it went on, with a set by John Fogerty and then a set from Stevie Nicks closing the show (with Foo Fighters backing them up as primarily the house band for the evening, with several line-up changes).

Stevie's Setlist:
  • Stop Draggin My Heart Around
  • You Can't Fix This (New song from the movie soundtrack)
  • Dreams
  • Landslide
  • Gold Dust Woman
The finale came when Steve Nicks came onstage, with one of the strongest connections to the Los Angeles studio that Grohl has immortalized in his film. (She and Lindsey Buckingham recored as a duo at the studio before they joined Fleetwood Mac, whose "Rumours" was recorded at the studio.) Along with a new song destined for the "Sound City" soundtrack, she sang breath-taking versions of "Gold Dust Woman" (which closed the night, with 11 musicians on stage) and "Dreams," both off of the landmark album "Rumours." But best of all was when all of the other musicians except for Grohl left the stage, and he accompanied her on acoustic guitar as she sang "Landslide." Everyone in the audience who has an iPhone captured the performance (and it seemed as if every audience member owned the smart phone).

Besides being a party to celebrate the film, the night underscored the message of the film: that people making music with other people (as opposed to making music on a computer) is the only way to create magic, and there was magic throughout the evening.

Dave Grohl Debuts Supergroup at 'Sound City' Sundance Premiere
Director takes the stage with Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty and other musicians featured in his studio documentary

MTV.Com Review

Did Dave Grohl Put On The Greatest Sundance Show Ever?
The Foo Fighters joined former members of Nirvana and Stevie Nicks for an epic Sound City Players performance in Park City, UT.

The crowd played favorites for the final performer of the night: Stevie Nicks. Introduced by Grohl as the "Queen of Rock and Roll," the Fleetwood Mac star was greeted by a sea of camera flashes and a new surge from the crowd. Nicks debuted a new song from the "Sound City" soundtrack about the death of her godson, a stalwart, octave-driven anthem called "You Can't Fix This." Nicks and the Foos then launched into a set of Fleetwood Mac hits, with Nicks bringing the night full circle by going back to her roots, citing "Landslide" as the song that made her the songwriter and performer that she is today.

"Sound City" Release set for the first quarter of 2013 Features Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham & Mick Fleetwood

Dave Grohl plans to release "Sound City" in the first quarter of 2013 via Roswell Films.  The documentary will features interviews with Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks among others.

The idea for the film came when Sound City owner Tom Skeeter asked Grohl if he wanted to buy the Neve console used to record "Nevermind" and countless other legendary albums including Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours," Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Damn the Torpedoes" and Neil Young's "After the Goldrush." Grohl jumped at the chance.

Dave went down to pick up the console and Tom Skeeter gave Dave a print-out of all the albums recorded at Sound City using the console.  From this Dave thought it would be a good idea to put together a web series and pulled together about 50 people he wanted to interview about recording at the famous studio.  After some time the idea of put together a full-length feature came to him.

Since then, Grohl has interviewed Petty, Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham, Trent Reznor, Frank Black and several others who have a connection to the studio.  You can check out snippets of the interviews on the Sound City Youtube Channel or visit the website

'Sound City' Stevie Nicks Mick Fleetwood & Lindsey Buckingham appear in Dave Grohl Documentary

Dave Grohl has finally provided a taste of his upcoming documentary on Sound City Studios, check out the first official teaser trailer here.

Sound City - A film by Dave Grohl
 A Roswell Film. Coming Soon.
Official Website | Facebook | Twitter

It’s still not clear exactly what we can expect out of Dave Grohl’s upcoming ‘Sound City’ but we have a much better idea now that a trailer has been unveiled. “I decided to make a film about that feeling when you put five guys in a room, hit “record” and the hair on the back of your neck stands up,” Grohl previously told Rolling Stone. “Expect some epic jam sessions.”

In addition to the previously announced “jam sessions” with Corey Taylor, Cheap Trick, and members of RATT — it appears that ‘Sound City’ will include interviews with artists who previously recorded at the legendary studio prior to it’s closing last year. In the preview you can see interview segments with Trent Reznor, Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Keith Olsen, Rick Springfield, and Krist Novoselic just to name a few.
