(Review) Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart - Hollywood Bowl (Night #1)

Rod Stewart is entertaining as ever at the Bowl
by STEVE FRYER
The OC Register

"Stevie Nicks opened with an 11-song show, and later joined Rod on stage for “Young Turks’ (his song) and “Leather and Lace” (her song, written and recorded with Don Henley). Both were fine collaborations, with their voices mixing well enough that, sure, they should go forward with it.

Nicks’ voice sounded better than ever, especially during the encore of “Love Is” during which she was accompanied by only piano and two supporting singers. She did a couple of her Fleetwood Mac hits, with “Gold Dust Woman” and “Rhiannon” given epic instrumental introductions that were a touch melodramatic. The songs are strong enough on their own, let ‘em breathe."

STEVIE NICKS PLAYS HER HOME TOWN

They say the only predictable things are death and taxes and concerts by veteran rock acts teaming up to fill arenas during a recession.

But this neither deadly nor taxing Heart and Soul Tour pairing Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks which arrived here on tax return weekend, playing US Airways Center Friday, raised lots of preliminary questions.

Which one would be the soul? Sure, Rod has covered a lot of Sam Cooke over the centuries, but Stevie has an equal number of songs about leaving her body. Metaphysically speaking, the soul should be her.

How much time would they actually spend onstage together?
Would they only sing songs they've recorded as duets with other veteran rock acts? They could do a whole set of those alone!

Who would sport more scarves?

And would they sit together on a piano bench and bang out "Heart and Soul," the song most amateur pianists insist on playing?

You say no, but if Rod is serious about this American Songbook thing, he's gotta get around to even that chestnut eventually.

(Review) Phoenix, AZ - Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks US Airways

Phoenix Concert Review: Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart–Apr. 15, 2011, US Airways

If you ask me who I like better, Stevie or Rod—it really is a tossup. Yes, they are both known for a raspy style of singing, both have been around for some 30 years making truly legendary music and both artist’s records and CDs fill my music collection – but there is just one thing that makes it impossible to choose—they are both amazingly and uniquely talented--unique being the key word…but more on that in a moment.

A bill with two such superstars is always a big draw, and so it was not a surprise to see a very full, near sell-out crowd at last night’s show. Stevie came on first almost exactly on time, which I think left a good chuck of the crowd stuffed in the tunnels trying to get in—but when you have two full sets from two mega-artist’s you need to get started. She opened with “Stand Back,” and I was pleased to hear a strong voice in top form from Stevie. “Outside the Rain,” was followed by the amazing Fleetwood Mac tune she performed beautifully, “Dreams.”

"Secret Love" on the Charts... Update! + Various Nicks and Mac on itunes

Stevie's current single is about to drop off the Triple A Radio Play charts... With a decrease over last week in the number of times it was played at radio, this will likely be it's last week in the top 30.

On the Adult Contemporary charts she's down a postion to # 22 with radio plays flat for the week - but still maintains it's bullet.  Only one station picked up the track over the previous week up to the reporting deadline of April 11th.  The Oprah Effect isn't present here as this reporting period ended on Monday April 11th.  There should be some sort of effect on next weeks chart.

These charts will be published in Billboard April 23rd.

(Review) "Rumours" Fleetwood Mac's Double LP Edition For Record Store Day

Fleetwood Mac
Rumours
WB 2 - 45rpm LP's
Tone Audio

After years of delay, Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 blockbuster Rumours finally made its way to the pressing plant—the Pallas plant in Germany, to be exact. True to its past performances, Pallas has done an exquisite job on these four vinyl surfaces. Though the cover printing has picked up a bit of contrast from the original, it’s printed on heavy stock, and there’s evidence of spot varnish having been applied. Very nice touch. Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray are rumored (pun intended) to have performed the remastering duties, yet there are no mastering credits on the jacket and the copyright date is listed as 2009. Fittingly, then, the record retains some of its original relationship-related controversy.

Those who have been waiting for this reissue since 2006, the year a few test pressings slipped onto the market, will be rewarded the second they drop the tonearm on the opening track. It sounds scrumptious. Thanks to the almost CD-quiet backgrounds, you hear much more of Mick Fleetwood’s percussion. On “Dreams,” Lindsey Buckingham’s backing vocals have considerably more space than they do on early pressings. A smidge of tape hiss creeps into “Songbird” at the end of the second side, but that’s not a bad thing. It actually reinforces the material’s analog greatness. Moreover, Christine McVie’s voice never sounded better and, thanks to the extra grooves made possible by the 45RPM extension, possesses more delicacy than the original pressings. “Songbird” is the best example of low-level detail; the following track, and beginning of the third side, “The Chain,” offers up the best example of dynamic punch. “I Don’t Want To Know” comes a close second.

The best news? Warner Bros.’ pressing is flawless from beginning to end. This is definitely the super-sized version of Rumours: It goes beyond big sound. You can just feel this record breathe, in and out, while listening to tracks that you thought you knew like the back of your hand. Wait until you experience the new information that’s available. And the soundstage is massive. If the music doesn’t float well past your speakers’ boundaries, it’s time to go shopping for a new stereo.

So, take a trip back to 1977 when Stevie Nicks had small breasts and Buckingham sported big hair. If you’ve got a rare, early first-stamper pressing, you may not need to add this one to your collection unless you are really obsessive compulsive. But if you love Rumours (and almost everyone does) and you don’t have a flawless copy, this edition is worth every penny. A 180g 33-1/3RPM version is also available for around $25. But fairly priced at $45 for four sides, the deluxe audiophile edition is the way to go.

–Jeff Dorgay

Rumours a 2LP set is being re-released on vinyl April 16th - part of Record Store Day. It's available for pre-order on Amazon for $39.06 and is a Limited Edition with a worldwide pressing of 4,000.  The single LP version also available for pre-order on Amazon.
