Lindsey Buckingham's Go Your Own Way and Stevie Nicks' Dreams were clearly telling both sides of the same story

At 35, Rumours is still one album you can believe in

Mention the year 1977 to lads of a particular musical bent and you're likely to be regaled with a torrent of memories about the excitement surrounding new releases by the Pistols, Buzzcocks and The Clash, seeing the latter in Trinity and watching our own Radiators from Space develop into the best Irish band of their generation.

All of that did take place, of course, as well as Bowie releasing the iconic single Heroes (UK chart placing No 24 and didn't feature in the US charts at all, so it's taken a while for the song's significance to become apparent) but in the wider world the album charts were dominated by the Eagles' Hotel California and Rumours by Fleetwood Mac.

Both of those records were inescapable for most of that year, with Rumours emerging in January and dominating the airwaves and in-store plays for 12 months or more. The story of Rumours and Fleetwood Mac in general is now the stuff of rock'n'roll legend. Although big sellers in their blues-rock incarnation in the mid-Sixties, by the early Seventies Fleetwood Mac were a busted flush, until bassist John McVie's notion of incorporating the Californian duo of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks opened the key to the golden door. An eponymous 1975 album cracked the million-mark Stateside but the band themselves were cracking up by the time they started work on the much-anticipated follow-up. McVie and his wife Christine were splitting up, as were Buckingham and Nicks and big bags of cocaine were sitting beside the recording console -- what could possibly go wrong?

Chaos

What eventually emerged from the madness and chaos was a record which seemed like glossy but slightly left-field west coast pop-rock on the outside but contained a bitter, fractious undertow.

Buckingham's Go Your Own Way and Nicks's Dreams were clearly telling both sides of the same story, while The Chain, despite providing the BBC's Formula 1 theme for decades, just sounded plain weird.

And what's more, 35 years later the album still sounds great.

The 35th anniversary edition of Rumours is released next Friday

WOW!  Stevie Nicks and Dave Grohl take 'Gold Dust Woman' to a whole new level!

Girl knows how to work a tambo!

Mick Fleetwood is off the island... Spotted in L.A.

The white flag is likely flying high over Mick Fleetwood's restaurant on Maui signaling he's "off island" as he was spotted at the Maui Airport yesterday about to board a plane... At the time, his destination was unknown... He then turned up at LAX in Los Angeles. Could he be in town to prep for Fleetwood Mac rehearsals?... Maybe he's in town for the Sound City Players show at the Palladium Jan 31st.

"Tonight, I've got Lindsey Buckingham's girlfriend," said Grohl when Introducing Stevie Nicks

Dave Grohl's Sound City Players Debut at Sundance Film Festival
Spin.com

And then Stevie. Oh, Stevie. As cooky as you are with your sunglasses on inside of this low-lit venue on this blackest of ice-kissed nights, your voice is heart-melting mana. Grohl agreed. Before she came out, he explained her Sound City story, in which Mick Fleetwood asks the studio boss for Lindsey Buckingham's info so he can offer him a place in the Mac, and the boss explains that he'll have to let LB's GF in the band as well. "Tonight, I've got Lindsey Buckingham's girlfriend," said Grohl before trading lines with her on "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." Her bewitching quaver brought the room up a few degrees — we noted at least two coat removals during their insanely smooth rendition of "Dreams" — and though the darkly droning Johannes-assisted version of "Gold Dust Woman" was a triumph, the show's greatest moment came just before that resonant close. Suddenly the 12 people onstage became two, and Grohl picked up the night's first acoustic guitar to accompany Nicks on her first big hit, Fleetwood Mac's wistful, weather-appropriate "Landslide." Their duet nearly silenced the rowdy crowd, now four hours deep into their drinks, and even inspired the bathroom attendant to abandon his post and film with his phone. The lines about getting older could've felt literal, but Grohl's era-spanning musical circus of badassery and general excellence made the point that good music: a) is timeless, b) defies genre, and c) is always waiting in the wings — as each of his headliners were at one point or another — for fresh context and a new crowd. Concert Review: Dave Grohl's 'Sound City' Players at Sundance with Stevie Nicks

by David Burger at Salt Lake Tribune

No fewer than 38 different songs were performed during the concert, in which Dave Grohl was the only musician to be onstage for each one of those 38.

It was the rare concert that only got better the longer it went on, with a set by John Fogerty and then a set from Stevie Nicks closing the show (with Foo Fighters backing them up as primarily the house band for the evening, with several line-up changes).

Stevie's Setlist:
  • Stop Draggin My Heart Around
  • You Can't Fix This (New song from the movie soundtrack)
  • Dreams
  • Landslide
  • Gold Dust Woman
The finale came when Steve Nicks came onstage, with one of the strongest connections to the Los Angeles studio that Grohl has immortalized in his film. (She and Lindsey Buckingham recored as a duo at the studio before they joined Fleetwood Mac, whose "Rumours" was recorded at the studio.) Along with a new song destined for the "Sound City" soundtrack, she sang breath-taking versions of "Gold Dust Woman" (which closed the night, with 11 musicians on stage) and "Dreams," both off of the landmark album "Rumours." But best of all was when all of the other musicians except for Grohl left the stage, and he accompanied her on acoustic guitar as she sang "Landslide." Everyone in the audience who has an iPhone captured the performance (and it seemed as if every audience member owned the smart phone).

Besides being a party to celebrate the film, the night underscored the message of the film: that people making music with other people (as opposed to making music on a computer) is the only way to create magic, and there was magic throughout the evening.

Director takes the stage with Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty and other musicians featured in his studio documentary

MTV.Com Review

Did Dave Grohl Put On The Greatest Sundance Show Ever?
The Foo Fighters joined former members of Nirvana and Stevie Nicks for an epic Sound City Players performance in Park City, UT.

The crowd played favorites for the final performer of the night: Stevie Nicks. Introduced by Grohl as the "Queen of Rock and Roll," the Fleetwood Mac star was greeted by a sea of camera flashes and a new surge from the crowd. Nicks debuted a new song from the "Sound City" soundtrack about the death of her godson, a stalwart, octave-driven anthem called "You Can't Fix This." Nicks and the Foos then launched into a set of Fleetwood Mac hits, with Nicks bringing the night full circle by going back to her roots, citing "Landslide" as the song that made her the songwriter and performer that she is today.

Review: Fleetwood Mac 'Rumours' Super Deluxe Re-issue ★★★★/5

FLEETWOOD MAC 'RUMOURS' Re-issue
Bernard Zuel
SMH.com

"If you're already sold on the album, you may be wondering if it's worth getting the extras. Although it has some decent crunch at times and includes Rhiannon, Nicks's hit from Rumours' self-titled predecessor, I don't think much is to be gained from the live disc. For committed fans, there are more rewards in the rarities/demo material. The demo of The Chain has an eerie, foreboding element to it that suggests it could have been a completely different song; likewise an early version of Silver Springs is lower, less optimistic and intriguing. And for those who doubted at the time, Nicks's compelling and stark Planets of the Universe - a demo not released until 2004 - will convince you there was a lot more than scarves and witchy stuff going on there."
