Video: Stevie Nicks speaks to @RollingStone about Christine McVie's return to Fleetwood Mac

Hanging Out at Stevie Nicks' House
The iconic singer tells us about her new documentary and Christine McVie's return to Fleetwood Mac

We recently visited the Los Angeles home of rock goddess Stevie Nicks, and while we can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a dedicated shawl closet and a tambourine vault, we can report that the kitchen TV was tuned to HGTV and the chandelier was fabulous. That house is featured throughout In Your Dreams, the entertaining film documenting the recording of Nicks' underrated 2011 solo album of the same name. Album producer Dave Stewart (of the Eurythmics) is also a compulsive videographer; he and Nicks are named as codirectors, although she dismissed the credit, saying, "It was very nice of them, but I didn't direct this." The documentary, recently released on DVD, was spurred by Dave Grohl: when Nicks lamented to him that her album had died, he told her that the only way to revive it was to release a film. "Go home and call Dave Stewart right now," he instructed her.

I am certain Stevie realizes Christine McVie was not one of the founding members of Fleetwood Mac, it was likely a flippant comment. Since Christine appeared as a session player as early as 1968 before fully joining the band in 1970 (maybe 1971?) the majority of Fleetwood Mac's back catalogue prior to Buckingham and Nicks joining the band featured Christine. It will be interesting to see what this year brings.

Given all the recent publicity with Christine, I will only go so far as to say I am cautiously optimistic.

I wonder when this interview took place. Since Chris sent Lindsey some new songs (which he loved) and since Stevie said on stage during her closing remarks at the Las Vegas Dec. 30th show that Fleetwood Mac would be back next year; I wonder if she is following Lindsey's lead and is now more into having Chris come back? I would bet that Lindsey thinks one or more of Chris' songs sound like a possible hit, and since Stevie wouldn't write anything new for the EP last year that perhaps they should be more pleased with having Chris come back and now maybe he has gotten Stevie to agree.

^^ ^^ Stevie was never not into having Chris back. She has stated many times over the years she would love to have Chris back. I think you're right this interview was done a while ago, but perhaps Stevie just got tired of wishing for it to happen and gave up on the idea.

this interview could been done a while ago if not then she is not reveiling everything she knows. i got some inside stuff recently from a band member and saw that person at one of the casinos in vegas just about 2 weeks ago. All I am going to say is it will all come out real soon. it will make lots of fleetwood mac fans. very excited about 2014 and more!!! stay posted on this site.

Agreed - Lindsey's already working on Chris' songs and so the beginnings of the new album are right now taking shape. I hope he does the kind of imaginative, elaborate arrangements he did on TANGO, which were arguably her strongest set of songs on a FM record. Frankly, Stevie's the one I'm worried about this time around. I hope she can come up with 3-4 great songs. I'm still haunted by what happened on TANGO, whose overall quality she was solely responsible for sabotaging. Lindsey I'm not worried about at all. He always comes up with great songs and has never had a bad album. In the best of all possible worlds, the new album will return the band to the magical alchemy of the first 3 records, which to this day serve as the basis for their enduring reputation and popularity.

I would not be suprised if Christine were in the studio already. She can come up with hooks of her own. I would mot be shocked at all if her and Lindsey were hard at work.

^^^ Stevie provided Lindsey with fantastic material for Say You Will, which was after Tango. She was still deep in grief after losing her mother, and that's why she didn't contribute any new material for the EP. Her solo album from 2011 is absolutely gorgeous. Both critics and fans agreed on that. On the other hand, Lindsey's production on some of Stevie's songs both on Tango and Say You Will was awful. As good as a producer he can be, he is not letting go of some outdated techniques, and techniques nobody in the world would consider to be aesthetic, except maybe for him (voice manipulations for example). That's what I am afraid of. They need an ouside producer to balance Lindsey, and give Stevie an option if she is not satisfied with the work done on her music, a few good Stevie songs old or new, and they are ready to go. Allegedly, Christine is in fact back on board which will be announced officially in march according to a few different insider sources. The whole thing is still in a very early sage, but it is slowly coming together. Let's just hope they don't let their egos ruin the experience for both us and them.

To the above poster Brian, i respect that you're keeping quiet, but is there any way you could tell us WHEN all of this should be revealed without any of the details. It would be geeatly appreciated!

I think we can all agree Lindsey and Christine CARRIED 'Tango In The Night.' Stevie had "Seven Wonders," which she co-wrote. "Welcome To The Room ... Sara" was a very personal song about her Betty Ford experience, but would have worked better if her third contribution had been something other than the AWFUL "When I See You Again."

Stevie contributed ten amazing songs to 'Say You Will.' Did all of them come out okay? No, but that's not Stevie's fault. The final products were always drastically different than the demos Stevie submitted. The production on Stevie's SYW material was stark and rather cold, which works well for Lindsey's songs. It does not work for Stevie's songs. Don't believe me? YouTube the demo for "Smile At You" and compare it to the SYW version.

Beyond that, Stevie wrote great material for 'The Other Side of the Mirror,' 'Trouble in Shangri-La,' and 'In Your Dreams.' 'Street Angel' is hit or miss, I blame the Klonopin haze. To say that one is worried about Stevie this go-around is a bit unfair. When 'Tango In the Night' was being recorded Stevie was heavily coked out, as she entered Betty Ford at the end of her RAL tour in 1986. Given that 'Tango' was released in April 1987 that left less than six months for any last minute revisions Stevie was able to make to her contributions, final production, packaging, promotion and all the other crap that goes into promoting a record between the finish line and release date. I would bet money Stevie has not only written several songs in the last three years since the release of IYD, she's probably got a few demos recorded during those sessions she wasn't able to use.

If Fleetwood Mac is indeed going to record this year, then I bet Stevie, Lindsey, and Christine each bring their A-game.

I would not believe a word "Brian" says because all he's trying to do is keep you coming back with the promise of "inside news" and every time you click on this web site someone gets paid...
It's interesting how many excuses are being made justifying the fact that NO announcement has been made about Christine rejoining the band...Seriously don't you think if she was really coming back "Mick I can't keep a secret Fleecewood" would have said something by now...I get the impression that Stevie is starting to get tired of people asking her about CM...Her latest being "I'll believe it when I see it" and before that she more or less called CM out by saying " If she want's to come back there's the keyboard let's go"...CM may have sent LB a few songs just because she wanted his opinion on them and not because they are for a new FM record...
The above poster was right when they said that LB is outdated...If they want to make a record that is worth anything keep LB away from the controls...If FM were smart they would let Stevie pick the producer because she is clearly onto something with "In Your Dreams"...
As for Christine returning "Dream On Silly Dreamer"

To the above moron, its interesting you would say that because that person doesn't own this site. As for your assertion that "someone gets paid" come up with proof of that or keep your damn mouth shut. I also know a few things and all i will tell you is get ready to eat your words.

Christine herself said "I've written some new songs FOR THE BAND......I sent them to Lindsey and he loved them" , I could hear his mind whirring about". Does that sound like a person who is kidding about returning? Christine is a class A songwriter, she knows how's to deliver the hits. She has even conquered her fear of flying! I do think she will be recording a new mac album as well as a solo album. We can only speculate because we don't know. Stevie needs to step up to the
plate. So Christine took a break! Big deal!,, stevie & Lindsey did. It sounds like she's ready to come back....
I say to the drama makers in the band, stop it and get on with it. We will just have to wait.

I am not Brian, and I don't give a s... what you click on, and who gets paid, but from more than one insider source, I have received information that the news about Chris will become official by the end of march, as I already posted above.

@MplsMike Stevie was a mess on Tango, but she submitted demos of better song than the ones that ended up on the album. She was a mess, and Lindsey deliberately sabotaged her, leaving her with a single decent song. That could never happen nowadays since Stevie cleaned up her act, and pretty much has the last word in the band.

What nobody seems to take into account (especially Stevie Nicks) is that they are all between 64 and 70 years old and don't have that much time left to record or tour. Stevie talks about Chris returning to the band as if they had 30 more years of touring to do. If they are lucky, and considering John Mcvie's recent cancer, they may have 1 or 2 more world tours in them and probably only 1 more album. From that perspective they should all welcome Chris back with open arms, record and album soon and tour as much as they can. Otherwise, within not that many years it will be Fleetwood Mac in wheelchairs on stage!
