Players Only Love You When You’re Playing: Stevie Nicks Gets a Biography

By Drew Grant
The New York Observer

Stevie Nicks has finally passed the milestone into the same sainthood with a new biography on the queen of Fleetwood Mac acquired by St. Martin’s Press.

Written by Stephen Davis, who met Ms. Nicks in the 90s when working on Mick Fleetwood’s autobiography, Fleetwood: My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac, this new book will chronicle the songstress’ forty year career, including those ten years she spent shying away from the spotlight after the breakup of her band and the dissolution of both her major love affairs.

From the press release:

Nicks’ hard-rocking paeans to Welsh witches, seductive sorceresses, and lonely goddesses are a source of inspiration and mystery to millions of fans, even bringing to bear “The Night of 1000 Stevies” where her devotees dress in her trademark costumes. This long overdue biography will shed new light on her unreported early career, her tumultuous love affairs and private life, and struggles with drugs, and will make it clear that even today, Stevie Nicks is nobody’s heritage act.

The Night of 1000 Stevies sounds like a George Romero film, but hey, no judgement.

No word yet either, on the title, or whether Ms. Nicks has authorized this bio, but we’re sure it’s better than that docudrama that Lindsay Lohan planned on making when she tried to acquire the singer’s life rights. To which Stevie Nicks eloquently responded, “Over my dead body.”

Beier Nabs Nicks Bio

Elizabeth Beier at St. Martin’s Press took North American rights to a biography of Stevie Nicks by Stephen Davis (author of Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga). The book, which the publisher claims will be the “first comprehensive” take on the singer, is by the man who helped Nicks’s former bandmate, Mick Fleetwood, write his autobiography, which came out in 1990, Fleetwood: My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac. (SMP said Davis first met Nicks in 1988, when he was traveling with Fleetwood Mac and working on that book.) David Vigliano and Anthony Mattero, at Vigliano Associates, represented Davis.

On the surface this sounds interesting and it's hopeful that we may see something... But on a personal level, I'll believe this when I see it.  Going by what Stevie has said in the past about writing her story, a traditional bio is not something she's interested in doing... But I know.. MANY people would love for her to write her story.

Hmm, this should be interesting.

This is actually very good news. It means that Stevie is truly passing into legendary status and so warrants a thorough, well-researched bio that raises things she herself could not discuss comfortably. It means Stevie is becoming more important, complex and accessible than she would otherwise. Stevie herself might not like it but it has to happen to a Goddess....

wow, i HAVE to get this bio! stevie nicks is such a legendary rock goddess and a true icon and i would love to read her story-the whole story, including her life before fleetwood mac. speaking of fleetwood mac, stevie (and lindsay buckingham)singlehandedly catupulted the band into rock royalty staus. yes, they were famous before nicks and buckingham joined, but nowhere near as famous as they were AFTER they joined. as a kid, i remember my mom playing her fleetwood mac records and being hypnotized by stevies's voice. all of my favorite songs were the ones stevie sang lead on (rhiannon, dreams, gold dust woman ect) and they still are, though i also like some songs that christine mcvie sang lead on as well. at any rate, i'm super excited about this book and i'll be the first in line to purchase one when it's in stores!

The book's been sold to St. Martin's and it's happening whether Stevie likes it or not. It doesn't require her cooperation or approval. St. Martin's has determined there's an audience for a SN bio and so there will be a SN bio. I'm sure it's going to be fascinating.

Stephen Davis has not only co-wrote the biography with Mick Fleetwood, but is a respected writer and written other rock bios. So I would be surprised if Stevie has not approved this book. And he and Mick were very careful in his book as to what they did tell and what they left out. I would bet Stephen will give Stevie the chance to take anything out that she is not comfortable with. And I can't wait to read it, it is long overdue.

I certainly hope it's true. Like everyone else I've been waiting for a long time for her bio, but I'll also believe it when I see it.

I do not like to read,at all. have not read micks biography nor yet the Fleetwood mac story yet. however for Stevie i would love nothing more to have this and be all about reading it.In hopes it happens someday.rather sooner than later. she is an icon and deserves it. Lots of her big fans r wanting this. I also would love to have a video dvd documentary of her musical career not just in your dreams.I have the tom petty one and I just love it, wishing that stevie does the something like that.

I actually HOPE it's unauthorized because I don't want the "official story" - I want the truth. Don't understand the doubters here - there's a book deal and it's going to happen. It involves contracts, advances, a major publisher, press releases etc., so it is indeed happening. Am already a little concerned, though, because Stevie did not "shy away from the spotlight for ten years." This is erroneous. She was down for the count due to Klonopin, but the "dark" years before her re-emergence with THE DANCE were only 95-96. Otherwise, she was always quite busy, if not fully up to the task of being Stevie Nicks Superstar...
